Shelf Called: Week 6 - Spin-Off
Book: The Calling (Darkness Rising, #2) by Kelley Armstrong
Author: Kelley Armstrong
Date Read: sept 1917
Rating: ★★★★

Review: The Calling starts not long after the events at the end of The Gathering, and keeps going from there. It is non-stop from chapter three to end. The first two chapters of the book set the story, and re-introduce us to the characters.
Maya Delany used to think she was a normal teenager. Now she knows that she is a skin-walker, a once extinct paranormal race that has been resurrected thanks to science. But her new shapeshifting abilities come with draw backs, not the least being the shadowy organization that wants to kidnap Maya and her friends. After their would-be-kidnapper's helicopter crashes, Maya and her friends find themselves stranded in the woods, miles from civilization, without a way to connect to home.
I really love Kelley Armstrong’s writing and this book didn’t disappoint. The plot is fast paced and full of twists and turns, even though we already knew or suspected some of them.
The best part is that at the end, Maya and company goes in search of our friends from the Darkest Powers series, and I do hope they find them.

Shelf #7 called: Demons (9/20/17) ~ shelved 115x
Book: A Demon Bound
Author: Debra Dunbar
Date Read: Sept 27
Rating: ★★★
Review:
I chose the book for two reasons - it fit the current shelf called and it was free on Amazon! Well, I was pleasantly surprised by the book. It has snarky humor which reminds me of the Quincy Harker, Demon Hunter series by John G. Hartness - with the snarkiness of the MC. I like the playful banter in the book and the story was not bad.

Sam is a demon, who loves living on Earth so she has stolen a 40 year old woman's body - she didn't possess the woman, she stole her body and literally owns it now. But Sam isn't evil...she just isn't good either! She attempts to keep her powers under wraps so that she doesn't set off any angel radar...because she would be killed and sent back to the demon realm, if found. She can't contain her impish sense of humor, and she likes to piss people off on purpose, but Sam isn't evil...she just isn't good either!

It was a fun read.

Shelf #7 called: Demons (9/20/17) ~ shelved 12x
Book: Madhouse (Cal Leandros, #3) by Rob Thurman
Author: Rob Thurman
Date Read: Sept 27
Rating: 4★
Review:
I loved the first two books, and I was not disappointed with #3. In Book 1, the mystery of Cal's life was revealed and in book 2 the love of his life was kidnapped.
An exhibit on Famous Serial Killers at the museum takes on "new life" when one of the residents is resurrected. Sawney Beane supposedly killed and ate some 1000 people - actually more like 6 or 700 according to Robin Goodfellow. To make matters worse, someone is trying to kill Robin and they can't even begin to narrow down his list of enemies.
Despite the dire situation, Thurman injects some humor and humanity into the story to balance all the action and bloodletting. Cal has decided he's ready to lose his virginity, and Robin can hardly wait to help him. Though this does add some great laugh out loud moments (like when Robin suggests a tryst with a water nymph & Cal declares he can't get it up in 50 degree water!!) there is a serious side that gives readers more insight into Cal's fears about his heritage. He's afraid to father children that could turn out to be monsters (as he sees himself), which is part of why he's afraid to have a relationship with George.
Niko is very protective of Cal, and their strong relationship is the foundation of the series. However, Cal can't live in Niko's shadow indefinitely. As indicated in the last book, the Auphe have returned with a vengeance, and Cal needs to step up to the challenge as the one who may have to protect his brother for a change. Cal grows a lot in this book, and it was a welcome development. One thing I didn't like - the huge cliffhanger ending in the last sentence!
Overall, this series is very strong and I highly recommend it. The writing is so well done, and Cal's narrative continues to be engaging. There's also a tantalizing glimpse at the end of the book that might lead back to the central narrative that made the first two so darn good...

Author: Meghan Ciana Doidge
Date Read: 09.25.17

How it Fits: Shelved 6x

Review:
Another action-packed and fun installment to the Dowser series! At first I thought this one was really different than the previous 2 books but realized that it was just darker and more emotional than the previous ones. It still has magic, action and some humor but Jade has grown a lot in the three months between books 2 and 3 and because she's been off training, the relationships she had have changed.

I really like Jade as the heroine. She continues to try her best, has a huge heart, and is still trying to figure out who she is and what she is capable of after coming into her own with her abilities and learning who she really is (her father). She isn't perfect and makes mistakes but she learns from them.

Was surprised McGrowly wasn't present more but his role, as small as it was, had a huge impact. Don't think Jade'll be able to get past that which is pretty sad. But one of the best things about this book was the addition of Drake. Now he is a character! Hoping he becomes her sidekick :)

Things come to a head with Sienna, her "adopted" sister and villain of the series so far, and that ending was a bit of a shock. But I'm glad this storyline is now over and Jade can move on!

Really like this series so will be continuing on with the next one. Wondering what direction the series will go in now that this "trilogy" is over and Jade still has a lot to learn!

Review:
I didn’t like this book as much as I thought I would. Although, I did read it during exams and I may have read it faster than usual so that may be part of the problem.

After having their egos bruised, a group of warriors opened Pandora’s box releasing the demons inside. The plan was for them to contain the demons themselves and show Zeus he made a mistake in giving Pandora the task of guardian the demons. But as usual, things don’t go as plan. As punishment, each warrior holds a demon inside them. Mythology is one of my favorite subjects so I was immediately intrigued.

But it just didn’t do it for me. The story felt like it was going in circles and the plot didn’t usually pick up until halfway to the end. I like Maddox all by himself but didn’t really cared for Ashlyn. I especially didn’t care about Maddox and Ashlyn as a couple, I wasn’t feeling the chemistry between them. I was more interested in the other characters, especially Torin & Reyes, than these two so I’m going to continue with the series.

How it Fits: In Death Series #24

Review:
I can't believe after 24 books I still adore this series!

As always, Susan Erickson is a fabulous narrator! I didn't really like her in the first book I listened to but by the 2nd she grew on me (just like James Marsters for the Dresden Files). Now I can't imagine there being any other narrator. She does the emotions and the accents so well, and I think she does a better job of keeping me engaged as opposed to reading the book, that I always look first for the audio and sometimes even wait for it to become available. (Or use a Scribd or Audible credit.)

The mystery of this story is great. I called the killer early on but it was still fun and entertaining. But what keeps me coming back again and again is the relationships and characters. Eve and Rourke, Eve and Mira, Eve and Mavis, Eve and Sommerset, Eve and Peabody. Peabody and McNabb :) I just love everyone to pieces! Loved the scene where Eve breaks down and we hear her insecurity and vulnerability because of Rourke's ex coming into town and trying to drive a wedge between them. Knew there was nothing that could come between them but loved those scenes all the same.

Great addition to this series, and one of the few that I have actually 5-starred. Will definitely be continuing on! Only 20 more to go to catch up...

This was another pick based on a challenge task! :-)

I'm a sucker for a good time travel tale! But this one was a little bit of a new take on the genre. This wasn't just time travel - it was inter-dimensional travel! So instead of traveling to any place in time, you can only travel to a time where you have existed...and the jump is to a alternate dimension, so you "jump" into a different version of yourself. At the jump, you take over the consciousness of the alternate you - and we learned later that only that version of you is aware of all you did after you are gone.

The story is really good, it have a couple of twists that I didn't see coming, although I did know (view spoiler) The characters are really likable (for the most part) and the world/story just sucked me in! Very enjoyable read! I will continue the series.

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 517 comments Yea I'm not a huge fan of this genre - I always think of Neil Gaiman (not really a fan) or Alice Hoffman and I usually don't read them unless I have to for a challenge.

I saw that you had Unholy Ghosts (Downside Ghosts, #1) by Stacia Kane on your TBR shelf and it works (shelved 1x). I love this series but know its not for everyone. Its dark and gritty and you have to have an open mind about them because the MC is a hard core drug addict. Also the "street talk" is annoying at first, but I say if you can deal with BDB talk, then you'll get used to it and be fine!

I liked the main character but some of the side characters sort of irked me (the blond chick, the vampire, the witch chick). I've watched all 12 seasons of Supernatural and STILL love it! It's my guilty pleasure :D Not exactly the same but they are both supernatural-themed - angels, demons, vampires, other monsters.

Shelf #9 called: Magical Realism (10/04/17) ~ shelved 1x
Book: Burn for Me
Author: Ilona Andrews
Date Read: Oct 7

Review:
Let me start with, I enjoyed this book and I love Renee Raudman as a narrator. But - with her narrating both the Kate Daniel's series and this one, I found it hard not to compare the characters. Mind you - the worlds and the characters are different, it's just in my mind, Renee's voice is Kate..... :-)

The premise of the book takes place in a world where a serum was discovered that could awaken magic in humans. Eventually the serum was destroyed, but the damage had already been done, and now the magic was passed on genetically. Now in the present, the magical families guard their bloodlines within their Houses. (Houses = families)

Nevada is our MC who is a PI and has taken over the family business after her father dies. Her family has a little magic, but they are not in the "upper class" with the Primes (the House familes).

Nevada has been commissioned by the company that owns the mortgagte on the family business to find a Prime from one of the powerful magical Houses that has gone rogue, Adam Pierce, and he must be delivered to his family alive. Seems like a no win situation - and it is - because if she refuses to take the case, or fails to apprehend Adam Pierce, her family will lose everything. With nowhere left to turn, she teams up with another powerful and equally dangerous Prime from another House - Mad Rogan - who has a family tie to the bank disaster and Nevada hopes that this will compel him to work with her.

Nevada and Mad Rogan are a true odd couple with a daunting task- and the trip they take together is one thrilling ride!
The book is full of humor, action and sexual tension. It is the type of book that sucks you in almost immediately and you have to know what happens.

I was a little disappointed about this one. It was basically a recap of the last 3 books, there’s no new enemy here & the troubles that were already solved are brought back. I liked Krysta for the first half of the book, I thought she was kick-ass & sassy but as the story progressed I just found her to be somewhat selfish. Etienne was sweet but a little flat, we don’t learn much about him since most of his thoughts were on Krysta. The romance didn’t really grab to me in this book, it was too similar to Richart’s & Jenna’s book the only difference being Jenna’s didn’t know anything about vampires & Krysta had some knowledge of it. But then again they’re twins & they tend to have similar lives (There are 10 pairs of twins & 3 pairs of triplets in my family so I should know). As for the action, like I said there was nothing we hadn’t seen in the last books, the mercenaries & their drug is back, the final battle was the same as the last book with different points of views.

The side characters, the banter between the Guardians & their Seconds, the development with Amy, the insight into Zach, Seth, & David & the new plot for the next book was the only thing that kept me intrigued & the reason why I gave it a high rating. I will continue with the series, I just hope something more exciting happens.
