All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr
Rating: 5 stars

Just finished listening to Anansi Boys, my second Neil Gaiman book. I loved it and gave it 5 stars. FYI: Lenny Henry is one of the BEST narrators I've ever listened to...and I've listened to a lot of them over the years.
Flowers for Algernon. I never read this book in high school and I just happened to come across it a while ago. I listened to the audio version and I thought “now this is a book that deserves to be called a classic.” Written in 1959, the story is still relevant today.
Villette I had forgotten how good Charlotte Bronte was. I think people forget she wrote more theWuthering Heights & Jane Eyre

Sj, I'm waiting for Dark Emu from the library right now! :)
Seventy years old next year. Scary how well George Orwell forecast in 1949 what might occur in 1984, some of which we deal with in 2018. Can't find any reference to Fake News, but the whole premise is based on continually rewriting history. This was a re-read for me, so I re-reviewed it.

Stunning and wintry. The Snow Child was a debut by Eowyn Ivey and was a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize. No wonder!

The Ballad of Huck and Miguel is a brave updating by Tim DeRoche of Mark Twain's American classic, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Easy reading, powerful linocut illustrations.

Compelling true-crime. If it weren't so well-documented, it would be hard to believe.Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI by David Grann reads like a novel with an outrageous plot that will outrage YOU!

I just read that too. You're right, it is compelling and well-documented.

A second look with the benefit of hindsight. Talented Aussie author Aoife Clifford has written her second book Second Sight. Lots of seconds there, but it's a first-rate read!

Cute, inspiring children's book showing how young Fern finds a way to give Joy to her sad, stay-at-home Nanna. Recommended for all families!

Just read The Keeper of Lost Things by Ruth Hogan, who has somehow managed to squeeze a bunch of stories together. I have to add that it’s one of the prettiest covers I’ve seen!
My review is here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Yvanna wrote: "Was it a good book? Would you recommend it?"If you mean The Keeper of Lost Things, I’d say it depends on the kind of book you like, Yvanna. I’ve included some quotes in my review and a bit of a summary (without giving away any of the plot!), so you can get a better feel for it. If you click on the link in the post above yours, you’ll see the review.
I loved this artistic picture book of a newspaper searching for its purpose in life in a beautifully illustrated olde-worlde society. I included some of the illustrations. Enjoy!A Page in the Wind by José Sanabria.

I just finished The Fishermen. Unfortunately I wasn't impressed.https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Just finished There There by Tommy Orange. This book was simply an eye opening debut novel. A tale about urban Native Americans who are struggling to live and raise families in Oakland, CA, theirs is a story that is never told. Fantastic read.
Just finished "Howards End" by E.M. Forster. Great book about the classes in England during the pre-WW1 era. Highly recommended
A bright red cover for an equally colourful history/mystery! I recommend Susan Orlean’s The Library Book to all book lovers.

Can't wait to read Mayor of Casterbridge. I've finished Return of the Native and am currently reading Tess of the D'Urbervilles. Love Thomas Hardy.
Just reviewed renowned Aussie mystery writer Michael Robotham's psychological thriller The Secrets She Keeps. It's a good stand-alone read!

I'm celebrating Nelson Mandela's 100th birthday by reviewing a picture book about his life. Grandad Mandela by his daughter, Zindzi Mandela, (and two of her grandchildren). History made really easy!

Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood. I’d call it a novelization of a true murder mystery. Which makes it like Capote’s In Cold Blood which I’ve seen described as a non-fiction novel. Set in 1800’s Canada it featured a teenaged servant who supposedly murders her employer and the alienist who is trying to figure her out. Atwood is always an excellent story teller. I really enjoy her books.
I just read Lauren Groff's new book - short stories about hot, sticky, dangerous Florida.

I think there is actually a "genre" now called True Crime Fiction!
Just finished listening to my 3rd Neil Gaiman book. I gave another 5 star rating to American Gods. This audio version was the 10th Anniversary/Author's Preferred Text edition read by a full cast. It was absolutely excellent! As a special bonus, in the appendix, you get to hear the conversation between Shadow and Jesus that was left out of the original book.

Poor Kinfolk and Rich RelativesWe have an Alabama Room in our local library that showcases authors from our state and I found this gem there. It took me back in time to when I'd listen to my Opa chat with other old men and the twinkle in his eye as he got to the punch line. I don't think any of them knew how to tell the truth as they tried to outdo each other with wit and humor. Felt like home reading this oldie but goodie.Poor Kinfolk and Rich Relatives

I've been wanting to read this ever since I learned about it on Netflix. Looks like a great read.
I recently read the debut of Aussie author Holly Ringland, The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart, which has the best cover ever!

Oliver Twist meets The Godfather in my new favourite book! Boy Swallows Universe is acclaimed Aussie journalist and writer Trent Dalton’s debut novel.

Last night, I finished The Story of Arthur Truluv by Elizabeth Berg. I gave it 3 stars. A story of 3 lonely people who find each other. Sweet, undemanding read for a summer's day, but if I had to select one of Berg's books to recommend, I'd go with Open House!
I was fascinated by My World on Wheels: The Posthumous Autobiography of Russell Mockridge. A great Aussie story of a unique international champion who beat not only the amateurs in the Grand Prix of Paris, he beat the professionals as well - so they banned amateurs after that! Then he won a couple of Olympic gold medals. It's an old book, so I summarised rather than review so people can enjoy some of the stories. He was a good writer, too.

A more recent biography of him is Russell Mockridge: The Man in Front by Martin Curtis

Oooo it makes me so mad! Stone-age indeed! Bruce Pascoe’s slim book Dark Emu: Black seeds agriculture or accident? should be required reading in schools. Fix history books.

Oprah Winfrey and Angelina Jolie, eat your hearts out! Josephine Baker was a fabulous, internationally famous dancer, spy, and civil rights activist. I enjoyed this lively introduction for kids by Mª Isabel Sánchez Vegara.

I think I'm the one out of step about Claire Fuller's new novel Bitter Orange. Many readers love it.
