Ann A (readerann) | 867 comments You have some great books on your list! I loved Owen Meany and Reading Lolita in Tehran. Best of luck on Saturday.

message 6: by Shelley (new)

Shelley | 123 comments I listen to audio books during my commute (over 2 hours), during work, and at home while cooking or playing games on my computer so I fly through books if I'm feeling them. I also listen at about 1.5x. In light of this, I have finished Flashman and Girls of Riyadh. I'm now on Shards of Honor, but we'll see if I finish that before the Readathon.

I may have a problem.

message 7: by Shelley (new)

Shelley | 123 comments I started today early because I was up and about. So at 7 EST I left for my run listening to Pirates! An adventure with Scientists. Two hours later, I am am back home, 10 miles and one book down. On to the next adventure!

I like being able to add notes beside them and only editing one post instead of constantly adding new ones. Also, I love the covers. I may not remember titles but seeing covers really jogs my memory.

message 18: by Susan (new)

Susan | 678 comments I'm currently listening to the Romanov Sisters also! It's a good one isn't it?

message 19: by Shelley (new)

Shelley | 123 comments Susan wrote: "I'm currently listening to the Romanov Sisters also! It's a good one isn't it?"

I'm particularly enjoying it because it gives such a strong foundation to how the family was able to just crumble. It's always been presented to me that they were out of touch and naive which led to their fall. This books reads that they knew they were making "bad" choices, but didn't really have great alternatives or at least didn't have the fortitude, both physical and mental, to deal with those consequences.

Anyway, yes I'm enjoying it. The narrator is really good too.

message 20: by Shelley (new)

Shelley | 123 comments Figured I should fill this out.

1) What fine part of the world are you reading from today? NYC
2) Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to? The Furthest Station by Ben Aaronovitch. I love that series and I've held off reading this novella just for the readathon.
3) Which snack are you most looking forward to? I'll probably be bouncing from cafe to cafe on Saturday getting goodies.
4) Tell us a little something about yourself! I love sci-fi and fantasy but try to hit classics as well. I'm a runner and have a 5-mile race Sunday morning, so I'll be shifting my readathon to Friday night to Saturday. Last time I choose a short audio book and ran to it so I think I'll do that again.
5) If you participated in the last read-a-thon, what’s one thing you’ll do different today? If this is your first read-a-thon, what are you most looking forward to? Last time the weather was gorgeous so I spent a lot of time outside. I don't think I'm going to be able to do that this time.

message 21: by Ann A (new)

Ann A (readerann) | 867 comments The only book on your list I've read is Reading Lolita in Tehran, but I do recommend it!

message 22: by Shelley (new)

Shelley | 123 comments I started my 24 hours at 8 Friday night so I'm 4 hours in. I started with a nice quick book to jump start this. We'll see how much longer I can go before I need to sleep.

Hour -12 to -8
Finished Heart of Tin (Dorothy Must Die, #0.4) by Danielle Paige The Man in the High Castle by Philip K. Dick

Currently reading City of Light, City of Poison Murder, Magic, and the First Police Chief of Paris by Holly Tucker

Audio that I'm listening to when not reading The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

message 23: by Shelley (new)

Shelley | 123 comments Hour -8 to -4
Finished City of Light, City of Poison Murder, Magic, and the First Police Chief of Paris by Holly Tucker

Audio that I'm listening to when not reading The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

message 24: by Shelley (new)

Shelley | 123 comments Hour -4 to -1 I slept for two hours which was much less than I had planned...Because I got wrapped up in my book.

Finished All My Friends are Superheroes by Andrew Kaufman The Grownup by Gillian Flynn

message 25: by Shelley (last edited Oct 21, 2017 04:52PM) (new)

Shelley | 123 comments Mid event checkin (technically my 23 hour checkin)

1. What are you reading right now? Throne of Fire by Rick Riordan, and I'm still slowly getting through the audio of the Song of Achilles
2. How many books have you read so far? 10 books. My favorite was the Furthest Station by Ben Aaronovitch and my least favorite is Gork the TeenageDragon
3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon? I'm going to try to finish the two I'mcurrently reading by tomorrow
4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those? I slept for 2 hours. I meant to sleep longer but I got really wrapped in my book beofre hand and then woke up excited.
5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far? How many books I'm getting through. I know I choose short ones, but I am really doing some damage to my TBR list.

Colona Public Library (colonapubliclibrary) | 197 comments Did you like Gal's All Fright Diner? I've had that on my TBR pile a while.

I love you variety of audio, physical, and ebooks! Happy Reading! ~Ashley

message 27: by Shelley (new)

Shelley | 123 comments I did like it. It was super quirky scifi, which is my style.

message 28: by Shelley (last edited Oct 22, 2017 12:43PM) (new)

Shelley | 123 comments 1. Which hour was most daunting for you? In the actual readathon, hour 23. I set my alarm to wake up early so that I could participate in the last few hours. Instead I hit stop instead of snoozed and woke up 10 min before I had to leave for my event this morning (the whole reason I had to shift my hours). I wasn't able to do any reading in the last 9 hours.
2. Tell us ALLLLL the books you read!
Heart of Tin
The Man in the High Castle
City of Light, City of Poison: Murder, Magic, and the First Police Chief of Paris
All My Friends are Superheroes
The Grownup
The Death of Ivan Ilyich and Confession
Gork, the Teenage Dragon
The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making
The Furthest Station
Redemption in Indigo
Part: The Throne of Fire
Part: The Song of Achilles
3. Which books would you recommend to other Read-a-thoners? I love the Rivers of London series (The Furthest Station) so that's always a recommendation. I also liked City of Light, City of Poison about late 1600s Parisian nobility.
4. What’s a really rad thing we could do during the next Read-a-thon that would make you smile?I'd like to have more non-picture challenges or maybe non-picture options in those challenges. None of my books are physical copies so it's difficult.
5. How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? Would you be interested in volunteering to help organize and prep? I will definitely be participating. I don't know if I'll have the time to help.

message 29: by Shelley (new)

Shelley | 123 comments I'm getting ready for this Readathon! I just did a 24 in 48 RAT and finished a bunch of smaller books, so now I'm trying to finish Moby Dick before this one. Need to switch things up a bit, and thankfully I'm actually enjoying it!

The day of the Readathon is going to be rather difficult for me, though, because I have a book club meeting and a bookstore crawl. Amazing how so many reading things have descended upon the same day.

For some reason I'm not super feeling the organizing of the TBR list this year which I've loved doing in the past. I have a few that I've taken out from the library but I may just keep it loose until the day of. One of the prompts on my reading challenge this year is read a book in one sitting, and it did cross my mind to have Moby Dick be my one book that I read this RAT. The thought amused me, but I'm not trying to punish myself.

At least it's all bookish related!

message 31: by Shelley (last edited Apr 28, 2018 04:24AM) (new)

Shelley | 123 comments Because my schedule is filling up fast for the week and I need to sleep at some point, I'm going to plan on this being more of a 24 in 48 RAT starting tomorrow night. My TBR list is

Physical:
The Vesuvius Club (Lucifer Box, #1) by Mark Gatiss
The Struggle for Catalonia Rebel Politics in Spain by Raphael Minder
Redshirts by John Scalzi

Ebook:
Red Mars (Mars Trilogy, #1) by Kim Stanley Robinson finished during pre-RAT
The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath
Imagining the Future of Climate Change World-Making through Science Fiction and Activism by Shelley Streeby

Audiobook:
Ajax Penumbra 1969 (Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore, #0.5) by Robin Sloan
Secondhand Time The Last of the Soviets by Svetlana Alexievich

Graphic novels:
Season of Mists (The Sandman, #4) by Neil Gaiman
Relish My Life in the Kitchen by Lucy Knisley
March Book One (March, #1) by John Lewis

We'll see how much gets done and when I'll be able to participate.

message 32: by Ann A (new)

Ann A (readerann) | 867 comments Good luck! I loved Mr. Penumbra #1 - will have to get 0.5

message 33: by Shelley (new)

Shelley | 123 comments (from 2am EST which DIDN'T SAVE)

I put in some pre-RAT hours here on Friday night in an attempt to at least get 24 total this weekend. I finished Red Mars and got a quarter through Secondhand Time, both of which i'm enjoying more than i thought. After 6 hours, I'm heading to bed to join all y'all in the morning. Happy reading!

message 34: by Shelley (new)

Shelley | 123 comments 1) What fine part of the world are you reading from today? Brooklyn NYC
2) Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to? The Vesuvius Club is the oldest book on my TBR list (from 2013) so I'm excited to finally get to it
3) Which snack are you most looking forward to? I'll be getting lunch in a very foody neighborhood. Not sure if I'll get pizza or try something new, but it'll be good.
4) Tell us a little something about yourself! I have a rather busy day today, so I'm not sure how much reading I'll actually get done today, but I'm trying to get 24 in 48.
5) If you participated in the last read-a-thon, what’s one thing you’ll do different today? If this is your first read-a-thon, what are you most looking forward to? The "busy on the day of" seems to be a theme for me. Maybe that's my tradition! I have a much smaller TBR list this time. I have a bunch of books that I own on my kindle and all of the library so I'll probably be picking from that.

message 35: by Elyse (new)

Elyse (winesaboutbooks) | 2454 comments Mr. Penumbra on audio is fabulous! I love the narrator, Nick Podehl! Redshirts is HILARIOUS! The beginning is a little weird but push through because it gets awesome. Good luck!

message 36: by Shelley (new)

Shelley | 123 comments Ann A wrote: "Good luck! I loved Mr. Penumbra #1 - will have to get 0.5"

So I followed my tradition of going for a run that lengths one book (at 2x speed). I now need to take a shower, but I had to say that Ajax Penumbra 1969 was great! It was an awesome little book that still felt complete. Elyse, You should totally try to get a hold of it. It's a different narrator, but I still thought he did really well. And that's good to know about Redshirts.

message 37: by Shelley (new)

Shelley | 123 comments I walked to a local used bookstore and ended up with three books that I will now be dragging around the city. Totally worth it. Tales of Beedle The Bard, something Rotten, and Black Powder War all for $1 each. I had a coffee and croissant, finished my book and am moving on the next.

I read The Bell Jar which was haunting. A look at women’s mental health in the 60s. I’ve never had to interact with these professionals but dear lord I hope it’s better now!

message 38: by Shelley (new)

Shelley | 123 comments I'm about to head out to cheer for my friend's marathon. I've read Ajax Penumbra 1969, Red Mars,The Bell Jar, The Vesuvius Club, and Season of Mists. I'm halfway through Secondhand Time: The Last of the Soviets. I'll be driving and waiting a lot today so I'll be getting in a lot more reading today. but this will be last "official" update. It wasn't the best RAT for me, but it's been a great weekend so far!

message 39: by Shelley (new)

Shelley | 123 comments Ugh. I got up at 4 am eastern time this morning. I planned on taking a nap before starting this, but between working late and the rain causing a killer commute, I'm already tired and it hasn't even started yet! Oh well, I'll get done what I can.
My list for this RAT:
Audio book
A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry
Ebook
Elantris (Elantris, #1) by Brandon Sanderson
Dreaming in Cuban by Cristina García
A Town Like Alice by Nevil Shute
The Forever Court by Dave Rudden .
Book
What I Talk About When I Talk About Running by Haruki Murakami

Shelley | 123 comments Opening Survey
1) What fine part of the world are you reading from today? New York City
2) Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to? Elantris I'm a huge Branden Sanderson fan, so I'm excited to read this one.
3) Which snack are you most looking forward to? I'm meeting friends for brunch tomorrow morning. It'll be a nice break.
4) Tell us a little something about yourself! Summer in NYC is jam packed so I won't be reading the full 24 hours, but I will take advantage of as much as I can.
5) This is our VERY first Reverse Readathon! How does it feel in your time zone? As Elyse already commiserated, it's rough going from a day of work right into a night of reading. I am glad that the pain of unusual start times is being spread out a bit, though.

message 43: by Elyse (new)

Elyse (winesaboutbooks) | 2454 comments I slept for 5 hours. I was passing out by midnight. lol. My husband said I was getting mean because I was so tired. So I went to bed. Now I'm back and listening to an audiobook while cheering! Good luck!
