Prakash Sharma (pvsharma) | 105 comments Hi everyone !
I am getting frustrated with the servicing of Amazon. They are manipulating my book sales. Three times they reported more in graph and later deleted. I withdrawn from KDP select and uploaded on Smashwords and D2D but no sales. Again enrolled in KDP select because there Iam getting sales regularly. No satisfactory response from KDP care.
What about your experiences with them? Should I try pronoun or any other platform?

message 1515: by Aislinn (new)

Aislinn Prakash, are you sure it isn't people returning the books? That can happen. Maybe that's why it was reported then disappeared.

message 1516: by Prakash (last edited Sep 20, 2017 01:14AM) (new)

Prakash Sharma (pvsharma) | 105 comments Returning Kindle books? Is that possible, Aislinn?

message 1517: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments I believe it is.

message 1518: by Prakash (new)

Prakash Sharma (pvsharma) | 105 comments Amy! Is there any option to return a kindle book and get the money back?

If so, they would let me know. But, they are saying that there was no sales, while I have seen that day the book sales was shown in their graph on sales page. Later it was removed. I lost 4 books.

message 1519: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments Maybe I'm thinking of audible instead. I know I sent a couple of non paperback books back on something.

I don't know Prakash. Amazon is doing strange things at the moment. I have just received a royalty notification from them saying to expect payment and when I checked it said Japan. My reports have never mentioned me being paid anything from Japan. Maybe they are having some problems.

message 1520: by Prakash (new)

Prakash Sharma (pvsharma) | 105 comments Amy ! They are minting money and fooling Indie authors. It's my personal experience. In July, when I raised issue of royalty payment, there was a difference of 0.29GBP and you know what they replied? They told me that INR 0.25 added to my payment, while 1GBP is equal to 82INR.

Yes, it's possible.
I've returned books myself.

message 1522: by Aislinn (new)

Aislinn Yes, I've returned books before.

Prakash, I hate to ask, but are you sure that you are looking at the right spot in the graph? It moves every day, so your sales may have just fallen off the 30 day period. Some people get confused and don't realise that the graph isn't 'monthly'. If so, click the drop down and change the dates and see if your sales show up again.

Otherwise, maybe start taking screenshots so we can see what you mean.

message 1526: by Prakash (last edited Sep 20, 2017 05:43AM) (new)

Prakash Sharma (pvsharma) | 105 comments Aislinn ! No, I am not confused about that graph. I know it varies.
I have doubt that if this was the case of returning books, they would definitely clarify it to me.
I don't think that Kindle books are returnable. Am I wrong?
They clearly shown 10 Kindle books sales on 6th September and on 10th September it was just 6?
No satisfactory reply means cheating because I check everyday.
I think it's better to have screenshot after every sales noticed.

message 1527: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments Well done Elina.

Yes Kindle books are returnable, I've just looked it up. Might be a time limit of 7 days to return it. But they are returnable.

message 1528: by Anna (new)

Anna Faversham (annafaversham) | 1236 comments Prakesh, if you go to your Reports page on KDP and then to Month-to-Date, it shows Units Sold, Units Refunded and Net Units Sold. That is the easiest way to see if any of your books' sales have been refunded.

Some readers constantly ask for refunds but I guess Amazon susses them out eventually. I think nearly all KDP members suffer from refunds - often people who have read the book and then ask for a refund. Not fair, not nice, naughty and basically stealing. Over 5 years, I have probably had 15 refunds. Not enough to worry about.

I notice sometimes that the sales in $ or £ don't seem to coincide with what is possible in terms of the % I might expect. But it is just a few pence/cents difference and there is possibly something I am unaware of. It isn't, in my opinion, worth wasting time investigating. Time is too precious to seek out the lost pennies which are probably deducted quite legally anyway.

message 1529: by Prakash (new)

Prakash Sharma (pvsharma) | 105 comments Amy ! It means if I buy a kindle book, I may return it within 7 days and claim another book with the same money?

If my case was like that, they would clarify it in their reply but they didn't say anything in this regard.

Erica Graham (erica_graham) | 1496 comments Mod
Prakash, I have heard a few authors leave KDP for other avenues and they have been much happier. Unfortunately I cannot add much to this topic. I am with KDP, but being a children's picture book author, I don't sell any Kindle books since most people want paperback or hardcover for kids books. Sorry I can't help more and I wish you luck in finding answers or a new platform.

Kindle has gotten really slow for us. I want to say I heard Amazon is being sued for something crap that happened on Kindle- but not sure. I hate lawsuits and turn off as soon as I hear that word.

I have also heard that authors leave Kindle, and then after three months come back and resign for a limited time. Going on and off, spurs sales. I find it too much to keep track of, so I've left all our books on Kindle- even though I've moved mass distribution to Ingram.

Try doing a giveaway on Kindle to motivate interest in the book, Prakash. Also, perhaps you can get some blog coverage with blogs that discuss your subject matter?

message 1533: by Anita (new)

Anita Dickason (anitadickason) | 220 comments I did the same. I am using Ingram for everything, except I am getting ready to load to Smashwords. Ingram does not distribute to Overdrive, which I found absolutely amazing, but Smashwords does. I can opt out of the rest of their distribution channels and just use them to get to Overdrive.

Kindle is a good program, but I noticed a change when I pulled back the exclusive rights. It wouldn't surprise me to learn there is some hanky-panky going on. LOL

message 1534: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments I stopped being exclusive to Kindle months ago. I wanted iBooks because erotica is supposed to be difficult to get onto iBooks. (I was accepted by iBooks first time for both books- yay to me!) So I also went via Smashwords and opted out of Amazon distribution via Smashwords.

message 1535: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments I'm on Nook for both books too. (Polishes halo.) Just checked, still there.

The issue is some erotic authors try to write what I'll call the icky stuff. Fine, have it off with a vampire, but not a dead person. Have it off with a werewolf, but leave live animals alone. Do not write anything to do with underage people or people pretending to be underage. You must not attempt to pass rape off as an erotica scene. And you also have to make sure everyone in the scene consents.

I had to rewrite a scene in Modified to make it blatantly obvious that the main character wanted to be in the room and give him plenty of ways to get out if he happened to change his mind because a publisher who hadn't read the entire book said that scene fell foul of their dubcon (dubious content) rule. I'm on thin ice as it is with dubcon because of the nature of the genetic modifications I put the characters through to turn them into randy buggers. But so far I appear to be getting away with it.

I've just had to sign a thing on Smashwords this week to guarantee that neither of my books contain anything that breaks those rules. Without that guarantee the books can be pulled with no notice.

(Not that I'm bothered I've not sold a single copy other than one or two via iBooks.)

No, it's probably just consumer law. I read it was put in place in case of accidental purchases. But like a lot of things you buy online certainly in the UK you have a certain amount of time with which to change your mind about your purchase and obtain a refund.

ETA mine are actually listed as needing to be re-shipped. There are a few that have always said that. They may not take erotica.

I know I've been here on Goodreads a lot less, but I'm hooked on Twitter. It's highly addictive. ;D

Seriously, I have no idea how to handle all social media platforms and website. And I should write, edit and read. Oh, and handle the real job and remember to feed the kids... It's a lot!

That's all we can do! And I have to figure out the best platforms for marketing. Twitter is a place where all the YA readers are, right? :D

message 1545: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments The trouble with Facebook is, I believe, the more you post, the more their algorithm flags you as spam. At least that's what I read earlier in the year. I feel Twitter gets lost in all the other tweets, but I do it anyway.

message 1546: by Erica (new)

Erica Graham (erica_graham) | 1496 comments Mod
I agree, Amy. I try not to post more than 3xs a week on my Facebook page. I have found people are more likely to unfollow me if I do. Especially if the posts are all about "me, me, me." I make sure at least 1 post a week is about another author in my genre (since my audience is kids and their parents) or a meme with a tip for reading with your kids or about books. I find I have a lot more freedom to post what I want on Twitter.

Anita Dickason (anitadickason) | 220 comments Carole wrote: "What kind of change did you notice, Anita. AND, what is Overdrive?"

Sorry, to be so late in responding. I am on Amtrak headed to Michigan. First time on a train, what a hoot. Considering my next book involves a train, the timing could not be better for some research.

To answer your question, I was selling some books, not a lot but just enough to keep my ranking out of the gutter. When I discontinued the exclusive right to the ebook, it was like the bottom just fell out. I still had a few sales, but my ranking didn't go back up to the previous levels.

There are two program for libraries. Readers can borrow ebooks. One is Hoopla and the other is Overdrive. Smashwords and Pronoun distribute to Overdrive, but Ingram does not. I am trying to get information on who distributes to Hoopla and so far all I have gotten is they get their books from publishers. Someone from their vendor side is supposed to contact me.
