M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8051 comments It's brilliant isn't it? Although I feel the Egyptians might have been unfairly singled out. There are so many nations which could equally be given that honour!

Thanks. The church of England internet service came from your neck of the woods today. It was lovely and the last hymn was one of my favourites because dad and I both loved it and we had it at his memorial and good funeral. It felt like a gently reassuring message from upstairs.

Oh it's an excellent business model, for Audible
Authors are going to have to get their act together and abandon Audible

I think authors are beginning to abandon it. Just today Joanna Penn was talking about how she is now going through and aggregator to publish at Audible rather than through ACX. I guess that way she can pull her books at any time. Smart move. There is a lot of stuff afoot though. They have some heavy shit coming their way from government level in some countries.

message 1125: by Anna (new)

Anna Faversham (annafaversham) | 1752 comments Don't let them get away with it. I certainly won't touch Audible now, not even to listen to something.

message 1126: by M.T. (new)

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8051 comments Yeh, bastards. As I said, there's a fair of flack coming, I suspect on the grounds of creating a monopoly and competition law and other stuff. If they go down, they'll go bust, if my royalties are to go on and they are paying out the millions they say, it's just over a third of what is actually owed. They are never going to find that.

message 1127: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21813 comments It could get messy, but it might teach the other tech giants that the law applies to them

message 1128: by M.T. (new)

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8051 comments They're on the back foot. They've just announced they will no longer claw back royalties on any books that are returned after seven days.

message 1129: by Anna (new)

Anna Faversham (annafaversham) | 1752 comments Some Goodreads members consume a dozen books a week. Still, that does sound a whole lot better.

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8051 comments Anna wrote: "Some Goodreads members consume a dozen books a week. Still, that does sound a whole lot better."

I think it is in some ways but in others less so. Say the readers are all paying 250 per year. Ten of them buy books and the authors are paid £8 per book. But one is returned and the reader borrows a different book. Audible honours the royalty but now there are 11 readers to pay. The pot, divided up among the 11 authors won't give them £8 a book they will get a little less.

So basically it's taking the same shit and putting it in a slightly better polished and more spangly box.

Anna Faversham (annafaversham) | 1752 comments I wrote a reply to you M.T. but it all got too political, so I've deleted it! Suffice to say, it would be easy to get disillusioned.
