Annika | 1412 comments Sorry for being absent the past couple of days, I've been down with a bad migraine so I wasn't functioning very well as a human being.

So catching up and getting back on track again.

As for the planned books in February, I can do one of our pesky V's and get one of those out of the way. Was about to pick it up a few days ago until I noticed the author :)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 935 comments Okay! So after great thought, I've come up with the following:
0 - The Children's Home & Georgia Bottoms - both standalone books

1 - The Crystal Cave & Genghis: Birth of an Empire - both 1st in series

2 - But Why Shoot the Magistrate? & Secondhand Souls both 2nd in series

3 - The Cat Who Turned On and Off 3rd in series & Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Parts 1 & 2 - starts with H

4 - First Grave on the Right starts with F & Dying for a Cupcake 4th in series

5 - In the Time of the Butterflies & In Good Company- both start with I

6 - Murder of a Chocolate-Covered Cherry - location Scumble River (begins with S) & While I Was Gone by Sue Miller (S again!)

7 - Death on a Platter - 7th in series

8 - Book Clubbed & The Devil Amongst the Lawyers - both 8th in series

9 - A Tale for the Time Being - character Nao (N) & Crossing the Horizon: A Novel by Laurie Notaro (N again!)

Skip - Yes Please by Amy Poehler (P) & Life and Other Near-Death Experiences by Camille Pagán (P)

I got a million of 'em! Of course, these are subject to change. I'm doing an Around the World in 80 Days challenge in another group & we don't get our topic until Sundays. So I might switch out titles from time to time...
Planning is almost as much fun as reading! Just almost...

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Ooooh long list, Lauri!

I'll get a bit of work done first and then I'll start adding them to the spreadsheet.

Charley Davidson is another one of those everyone loves but I hated. *grin* Will be interested to see what you make of the first book! :-)

I agree about what you said about childhood favourites. I'm a little reluctant to reread those because views on life have changed over the years with experience and it might not at all be the same anymore as when you read the book as a child.

To Kill a Mockingbird is one of those hyped classics I haven't read yet. Most other classes in my school read it but for some reason we didn't, and I never got around to picking it up. I was hoping to get to it this year so we'll see. Maybe for this challenge then :-) And then I'll let you guys know what I thought of it.

Woo! Glad you're feeling better again!
Stupid headaches and migraines... as long as we're alternating, one of us will always be functional to be around haha ;-)

And good catch on that author! :-)

I'm really just reading books as they fall into my lap at the moment (and as they fit the shelf call in BSB) so I'm not quite sure yet what I'll be reading. Basically, I can snag up those cards that are difficult to fill for others.

message 156: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 935 comments Me too! Use me wherever I'm most needed & I don't mind changing around. I've got 97 books out of the library as we speak (or type.) I read a lot of cozy mysteries & YA, so I can cover lots of series books, too.

message 157: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Sounds good! :-)

We'll start yelling for you if we need particular cards to be filled then hehe.

message 158: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Alright, since your books are subject to change and you have books to fit practically anywhere, I've only added a few for now.

- Dying for a Cupcake
- The Crystal Cave
- A Tale for the Time Being
- First Grave on the Right (as a reverse since I've read it)

If you want to switch out one of those, just shout! :-) And have fun with the Around the World in 80 Days! I always love those AMMP races but opted against participating this time around as I cut back my reading a bit.
Amazing Race is starting up on the 13th though! :-)

Yeah, migraines are no fun - I keep wondering if chopping my head of is a better alternative =P

And I agree with you too about re-reading childhood books. Somehow the magic from the first time you read the books is missing. But I guess that's a part of growing up :(

Wow it was ages ago I did that challenge last time. But it was fun. And stressful at the end!

LaurLa | 1005 comments Do the numbers count in the title as part of another number? For example, How to Lose a Groom in 10 Days... Can that count for either 1 or 0?

Annika | 1412 comments LaurLa wrote: "Do the numbers count in the title as part of another number? For example, How to Lose a Groom in 10 Days... Can that count for either 1 or 0?"

No, that will count as 10. But had it been either number it would've been ok.

Annalisa | 1659 comments Hi everyone.

I just got added to the team. I'll be reading over more of the comments when I have some time later today. I have not read any Kate Daniels...Looks like I'll have to remedy that quickly.

Here is my shelf link for Uno: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

I played Uno obsessively for a summer with my younger brothers many many years ago. It was fun at the time, but I burned out. It rained a lot, and we were stuck inside. However, this looks like a better way to play uno.

Annika | 1412 comments Hey Annalisa, glad you found us!
It seems we have a lot of Kate Daniels virgins - we need to change that ;)

message 173: by Eldarwen (new)

message 174: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1659 comments I read that anything started now doesn't count towards the challenge. What if I'm less than 20 pages into the book? I ask because I stopped reading The Clover House when I got a cold earlier this month and wanted to read something light. I want to go back to it, but I've been binge reading YA (it helps with stress). I doubt I'll finish it before the challenge starts though.

I mostly read fantasy, science fiction, and YA. General fiction tends to be a bit dark, and I want to read happy books. Live can be depressing so when I'm reading I want to read something thing that isn't depressing.

I'm trying really hard to read from my TBR list. However, I seem to read the first in a series and then add the next to the list. It's not getting shorter.

Sitting on my table at home are: Red Rising and Rebel of the Sands. I'm sure the next time I get stressed with work I'll put some more books on hold at the library. If there is anything that you need covered, let me know and I'll find a book on my TBR list that fits and get it from the library. Ah...that's the other thing. All my books come from the library. I had to make a rule that I couldn't spend money on books because it was out of control. The library here is amazing so it works out.

Last thing before I go back to work, I'm from the mountains of North Carolina, US. (I'm not proud of my state's recent actions.)

message 175: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Unfortunately, no exceptions can be made as far as the starting date is concerned. Books need to be started on or after February 1st in order to count for the challenge, even if you are only 20 pages into the book.

I'd suggest either reading as far as you can and continuing with a few pages here and there throughout February, while reading books for the challenge as well though you won't be able to count it in that case.

Or put it aside and start up again completely at a later date?

Rebel of the Sands is sitting on my physical shelf as well. And I really understand the problem with banning yourself from buying books. I put a similar ban on myself last year for a few months ;-) Annika thought I was nuts haha.

message 176: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1659 comments I guess I'll put it aside for now. It was a heavier read, and I probably wouldn't finish it. I just got Truly Madly Guilty, so that's my weekend read, unless I hate it. I have low expectations so it will probably surprise me.

And the ban on buying books is not crazy it's necessary. Libraries are amazing. I still buy books when the library doesn't have them or it is something I'm going to want to go back to later, but it isn't out of control.

The Amazing Race...yup. Signed up for that one too. I may have to take a leave of absence from my job or just give up sleeping all together!

If you finish Truly Madly, I'll read it during the challenge as a Reverse! :)
I picked it up earlier this month, but never got around to it.

Hi Lauri,

I'm from the mountains of North Carolina.

I just started Truly Madly Guilty today. I'm on page 9 as I'm typing. This is not my typical read, so I don't know if I'll finish it or not. It's a 14 day book from the library so I'm feeling motivated to read it before it is due. Even if I don't finish it, you could read it for a 2 since the title starts with a T.

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Ooooh Heir of Fire!! The first part I found to be a bit slow but the book picked up, and Queen of Shadows was so good!!
I'll put that one in for a reverse since I've read it :-)

EDA: I've read Gatsby, too. Another reverse card filled!

message 182: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Don't worry though if you want to switch out your books! We'll make them fit one way or another. :-)

message 183: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1659 comments For some reason I was thinking My Lady Jane was the first in a series. It was one of my favorite books from last year. If we have need of another Reverse it could count as one.

message 184: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1659 comments I made a list of books and put a few books on hold at the library. I don't think I will be able to read all of these in February, but this gives you an idea what I'll have available to read.

Books I currently have:
1. Red Rising
1 -it is the first in the series. I don't think it really fits any of the others unless someone has read it already.

2. Rebel of the Sands
1- first in the series
3- Author last name Hamilton

3.Spice & Wolf, Vol. 2
I'm not sure if this book has the word count. I think it does but it wasn't in the database that was listed on the questions page. Maybe because it is a translation.
2-second in series
3-Author's last name Hasekura or character name Holo the Wisewolf
5-Author's first name Isuna
6-Title starts with S

Books I expect to get from the library (depending on how popular they are I could be waiting a week or two):
1. Magic Bites
1-first in the series
5-Author first name Ilona
Skip-Character name starts with K
Reverse-many team members have read it already.

2. Truthwitch
1-first in the series
2-title starts with T
5-Chracter name starts with "i" Iseult
6-Author first name Susan or character name Safiy

3.Dark Tide
3-Third book in a series
6-Character name starts with S Serafina

4. The Iron Thorn
1-first in a series
5-Title with an "i" Iron Thorn (I think I read that you could count or not count articles.)
Skip-Author's last name Kettredge

5. The Forbidden Wish
0-Character name Zahra
1-first in a series
4-Title Forbidden starts with F
Skip-Author's last name Khoury

6. A Noble Masquerade
1-first in a series
3-Author's last name Hunter
9-Title starts with N if you drop the article
Skip-Author's first name Kristi

7. Gemina
2-second book in series
3-character name Hanna
9-character name Nik
Skip-Authors' last names both start with K

8.Red Queen
1-first in series
7-Author's first name Victoria

I'm dying to read this one! I love this series so much. I didn't have much time in this month to read because of exam so I didn't touch it. But if third book is as good as everyone tell me, noone will tear me away from this one :D

Do we have to decide now all book we will read this month or can we add some later? I have winter break in February so I will probably read more book than usually.

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Annalisa wrote: "For some reason I was thinking My Lady Jane was the first in a series. It was one of my favorite books from last year. If we have need of another Reverse it could count as one."

Perfect! I'll switch it to reverse!

message 187: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Ginger, no need to decide all of them! I just put the question out there for those who plan and those who have books lined up for other challenges so we could get a bit of an idea of which cards would be filled.

You can change your mind on the books and you don't have to tell us all of the ones you want to read in February right away.

And yes, that series is amazing! I still haven't read Empire of Storms but Queen of Shadows was so good!! Have you read her other series? A Court of Thorns and Roses?

message 188: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Hmm, Annalisa, I can't seem to find a wordcount for Spice & Wolf, but since it's anime, I'm pretty sure the word count will not be met. Despite the number of pages, there usually isn't enough text surrounding the images.

I put the other two books, you currently have at your disposal on the spreadsheet though!

message 189: by San (new)

San (btsentence) | 119 comments Eldarwen, I haven't read ACOTAR yet but I definitely will.
I was in the reading slump for a long time and I missed many books and series that I should read.

message 190: by Annika (new)

Annika | 1412 comments I haven't read it either, but it's on my steadily growing tbr.... I might promise to get to it sometime during my lifetime ;)

message 191: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Good good, both of you! The first one takes a bit of getting used to the main character. She's a bit of a prickly one, but it fits her experiences. However, the second one was AWESOME!!!

Annika | 1412 comments Sorry :(

This isn't a manga. This is the novel series the manga and anime are based off of. There are some images but it is mostly text. I tried to do a search after it not showing up and I am almost positive it is over 50,000 words. Although, I didn't find a definitive word count. I'll put off reading it, though.

message 194: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments I'll check with Karen if maybe she has another magic tool to figure out a word count and I'll get back to you. If there's less pictures than text, with the page count, then it might just work.

message 195: by LaurLa (last edited Jan 28, 2017 09:32AM) (new)

LaurLa | 1005 comments E, I'll post some of my February options later today or tomorrow. But I will likely have an option for everything, including the Z and V letters, so maybe I wait and see what's needed?

ETA: Went to the spreadsheet (duh), and I can definitely cover the 8 and/or 9 card for hand one.

message 196: by Annika (new)

Annika | 1412 comments It's not too important what you pick to read in the beginning of the month -well as long as it fits something, but I guess that's a given ;)
We'll probably move things around as the month goes to get everything to fit. So pick books you've been itching to read :)

message 197: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Z and V books are always good! Also, if you have some I books? Or #5 in series because we seem to have a lot of 5s. I guess that is the spreadsheet's way of telling you guys to read the Kate Daniels series!! ;-)

LaurLa, with the amount you read, you could also just post as you go and we'll slot them in where they fit best.

message 198: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Annalisa, I checked with Karen and unfortunately her magic tools couldn't give a clear answer either, so since we cannot verify the word count, Spice & Wolf, Vol. 2 can unfortunately not be used for the challenge.

message 199: by San (new)

San (btsentence) | 119 comments I can read Illuminae for card 5. I should get it in next week :)
