This is the second book in the Vampire Academy series. Rose and Dmitri are still fighting their feelings for each other and both try to find love elsewhere. The Strigoi are becoming organized, which makes them more dangerous. We meet new people and lose old friends. I look forward to finding out what happens to Rose next.

A few of the teams had Assassin's as helping them win, but I think everyone is still two weeks away minimum from finishing. I'll wait for Sam's analysis as usual :)

This is the final book in the Women of the Otherworld series. Giles is determined to tell the world about supernaturals and he doesn't seem to care how this occurs. Savannah and company are trying to stop him. His goal is to use Hope to summon Lucifer and get him to help with Giles' plans. Along the way, we discover that someone who is thought dead really isn't and someone who is a bad guy gives his life for a good cause. I enjoyed the ending of this series. I liked that it was left open so there can be further adventures in the future. A little romance, a lot of action, a good story.

I'm loving this series right now. It started out so lukewarm for me, but it's gotten better and better and I really enjoyed this book. I've honestly really enjoyed the past few books and I'm really looking forward to the next one. Naasir is one of my favorite characters ever. I love Andromeda for him, though, I wish there might have been more detail about her. Though they haven't been written yet, I can't wait to read about Illium and Aodhan.

I checked out your shelves and found a few ideas from books I've enjoyed. I'm not sure what you are in the mood for:

In the Hand of the Goddess - Looks like you've read the first book and haven't continued. Tamora Pierce is one of my absolute favorite YA fantasy authors and this series is where I started. I also saw Wild Magic on your shelves. It takes place after Lioness quartet so you will get some spoilers for the fate of people, but it can be read on its own.

The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms - NK Jemisin is a great fantasy author and this was her first series.

The Thief - I don't think the series is complete, but it's shelved that way. Really fun fantasy book. I keep meaning to read more in the series but haven't gotten to it yet.

Red Rising - I saw you had this in DNF, and I'm not sure how far you got. It does have a very slow start, but it picks up and is a good book. The audiobook for this is particularly great.

Natalie | 549 comments Week 13: Assassins
Book: Blood and Betrayal
Date Read: 4/19
Rating: 4/5

The Emperor's Edge series has been a favorite of mine since I started reading it a few years ago and find myself slowly moving along. This book marks the halfway point, and I'm going to try finish this year.

Amaranthe was an enforcer until she gained the notice of the wrong people and was sent on a suicide mission. She got out of that and created a rag tag group of people to help the Emperor, but from the shadows.

The last book ended with a cliffhanger, the first for the seires, and this book opens up right where we left off with Amaranthe being kidnapped and the rest of the group shot down. The group splits up with Sicarius to track Amaranthe down and leaves Maldynado, the former aristocrat and current ladies' man (with questionable fashion tastes, particularly when it comes to hats) in charge of the group, which now includes the Emperor who definitely doesn't trust Sicarius and is not sure he trusts Maldynado.

Maldynado is one of my favorite characters and I loved having his POV and learning more about his past.

This book was a fun read with a lot of funny moments and I look forward to continuing and eventually finishing the series. And then reading one of the connected series :)

Natalie | 549 comments Week 14: Available at Library
Book: Hissy Fit
Date Read: 4/21
Rating: 4/5

I wasn't really sure what to expect from this book. I picked it up because I needed a book with a decorator. I love when I choose for a random reason like that and end up really enjoying it.

Keeley Murdoch just walked in on her fiance screwing her maid of honor, and former best friend, at their rehersal dinner. She throws a "hissy fit" (rightfully so) throwing everything she can get her hands on at the pair.

The wedding is off, her father loses his membership at the country club, and business at her and her aunt's interior decorating store dries up after her scene.

Luckily there's a new resident who just purchased a historical mansion and wants it restored within six month in order to impress a woman he hasn't even met. Also, Keeley's recent breakup has prompted her to start looking into what happened to her mother who left 25 years ago.

I will say the book was fairly predictable and has its share of cliches, but it was a fun read and kept me interested. The one big thing I would change is the table of contents had the first line as each chapter as the title and one gave a pretty big spoiler for the last chapter. I will have to look into the author's books for some more fun reads.

The Chosen (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #15) by J.R. Ward

I both listened and read this book. I don't hate it like many other fans, I note the problems and I note that J.R. Ward changed characters and world building to achieve the story she wanted. But J.R. Ward has done this before. I stopped reading her books for years because of this, but now I have no expectations from her but a fun story. I am no longer emotionally invested in the story line I just enjoy the romance and the characters. But yeah, she played fast and furious and known/loved characters are no longer recognizable.

Enjoyable if you are able to not get upset about trashing loved characters! LOL.

This book blew me away. I read a duology by this author that while it was also YA was post-apoc. I had bought this audio when it came out and then never listened. Big mistake. It is so good. Wonderful character development, beautifully drawn plot lot and very serious tension. There is friendship, violence and romance. This is ultimately, a critique of our rape culture. It is so well done. I can't wait to read this author's new book.

An assassin is in town to kill the Spider. While there, she plans to kill Bria Coolidge and Gin Blanco as well. Of course, Gin can't let that happen. So in addition to disposing of the assassin, she must also rescue a kidnapped child, experience Christmas with the Graysons, deal with her developing feelings for Owen, and decide if and when she's going to tell Bria her secret. It's a busy, busy time for Gin. I am greatly enjoying this series and look forward to the next book.

Natalie | 549 comments Week 15: Kickass Heroine
Book: Lady Knight
Lady Knight (Protector of the Small, #4) by Tamora Pierce
Date Read: 4/28
Rating: 4/5

When I think of Kickass Heroines, I think of Tamora Pierce. I picked up her first book Alanna: The First Adventure when I was 12 and she has been one of my favorite authors ever since. I fell off of reading a few years back and one of my goals when I did restart was to do a full reread of all her books. I started in 2015 and unfortunately am still working on it, but I'm well over halfway done.

Lady Knight is the last of the Protector of the Small quartet. Kel is one of my least favorite heroines. Which isn't a bad thing because I do love them all. But she's one I could never really relate to as much or had as much fun reading about.

She is noteworthy because she becomes a female knight openly (the first in over 100 years), has no magic, but does possess a strong sense of justice to protect everyone. Whereas I have no magic and only a few close friends who I would help dispose of a body for.

The final book in her quartet follows her commanding a refugee camp in her first year as a knight. While initially upset at the command as she wanted to fight for her country, it displays the strong confidence in her abilities that she has won from her superiors and her peers over the previous three books.

I'd say it's a smaller scale final book than the two previous Tortall finale books (Lioness Rampant and The Realm of the Gods). But it is also an interesting read and tells a different side of war.

I am sad we likely aren't getting more in Kel's story, but this is a good ending.

Onto Trickster's Choice!

message 449: by Sam (new)

Sam | 1052 comments Kel was actually my favorite of Pierce's heroines and I've re-read her story multiple times. I liked the fact that she cared for everyone, rich or poor, which is not something that can be said of Alanna. And Daine cared more about animals than people for the most part.

I will be reading Smoke and Mirrors by Jess Haines for my kickass heroine book.

I do admire her, but I don't relate to her as I am also on the prefer animals to people side. I am curious about her future and where she goes. I know Tamora Pierce was thinking about writing a book about Kel and her squire, but not anymore. She may write another short story book so maybe we'll get something there.

Have you read The Deed of Paksenarrion? I think the main character is very similar to Kel.
