January Challenge of the Month: TWISTER

One of my favourite reading genres is YA – and way back in time when I was a YA, the game my friends and I played at sleepovers was Twister. So as a part of my walk down memory lane January reflection we will play a Twister themed game.

(view spoiler)

Each of the 4 twister colours will represent 2 genres - you can pick either genre or find a book tagged with both.

1. Red - Young Adult (YA) and/or Science Fiction
2. Blue - Mystery and/or Fantasy
3. Green - Historical and/or Romance
4. Yellow - Contemporary and/or Paranormal

Then, Twister directs you to a body part to place on the spun colour – these being your Right or Left Hhand, or your Right or Left foot. So, as we can’t physically put a foot on a red circle I’ve assigned a task to represent the physical activity. So here are the hand/foot options:

1. Right Hand - Read a book with an author whose First or Last name begins with "R"
2. Left Hand - Read a book with an author whose First or Last name begins with "L"
3. Right Foot – Read a book with an author whose First or Last name begins with "S"
4. Left Foot - Read a book with an author whose First or Last name begins with "A"

Now for the fun part!

Using the Random Number Generator, found here https://www.random.org/ set your max number to 4 and generate two numbers. These will tell you which choices to read from. The first number tells you which genre, the second which task.
For example, if you get a 1 and then a 3, you have spun Red – Right Foot so will need to read a book tagged as either YA or Science Fiction (or tagged with both for more of a challenge) with an S author.

This is one set, four of these sets equals one game. Easy, right?

The goal is to play at least one game in this month (4 books) - so you will need to spin 4 sets of 2 numbers to get your 4 books – and yes, the over achiever readers can do more.

So, create a post below and record your spins and the books read, example:
First spin – 1 - YA
Second Spin – 3 - S
Book Read: Space Hostages by Sophia McDougall

Marla | 4789 comments April challenge of the month - Boggle
Duration: 4/1/17 - 4/30/17
Progress: 4 of 4
Books Read: 4

(view spoiler)

Of course in the Goodreads world we can’t shake up a tray of words so I have ‘virtually’ shaken it up and come up with this tray of letters:

boggle

From these letters you need to find words – How the game will work:

• Words must be at least 4 letters long
• The letters in the words must be connected.
• The letters can be connected by an edge or a corner - letters are those horizontally, vertically, and diagonally neighboring.
• The word doesn't have to appear in a straight line. It can be tangled around.
• Each letter in the word must uniquely appear in the grid. For example, if the word is ERASE, the letter E must appear twice in the grid. The word can't just loop back and re-use the same E.
• The word doesn't have to appear in a straight line. It can be tangled around.

Once you have found your word, or words, then to complete the challenge you need to spell it out. You can use the Title, or the Intials of the author.

CASE
B - Bits & Pieces by Jonathan Maberry (4/12/17)
A - Alan Bradley's The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie (4/20/17)
S - Stars Above by Marissa Meyer (4/17/17)
K - Kimberly Dertling's The Body Finder (4/24/17)

Marla | 4789 comments May challenge of the month - Marbles
Duration: 5/1/17 - 5/31/17
Progress: 3 of 3
Books Read: 3
Points: 6

Specific Rules

Each move that you make in Marbles is a specific book task. If you hit your marble, and knock it off the board, then your task is simple - read a book of choice. If you fail to hit your marble, or knock it out of its original place, you will be assigned a task to complete before you are able to aim for another marble.

When you aim for a marble, but are unable to knock it completely off the board (based on your draw) you are able to shift it a spot. Doing this is also beneficial, because the marble now has two positions on the dice to be shifted off the board with - the original number, and the position it took over. So don't be discouraged if you don't hit the marble! Your draw may still help you out in the long run.

How to Win

MARBLES is a point-based game! For every marble you hit off the board, you'll get 3 points. For every marble moved, you'll get 2 points. For every miss, you'll still get one point. Your souvenirs are as follows:

Cards will be issued on the 1st as well as first tasks!

Marla | 4789 comments September challenge of the month - Connect 4
Duration: 9/1/17 - 9/30/17

Only Vs. Challenges, so PASS this month

To sign up, choose

🕷 Game Type (if either is fine, not required):
🕸 1-on-1
🕸 2-on-2
🕷 Reading Level:
🕸 Casual: 1-2 books/week
🕸 Heavy: 3+ books/week

🕸 All partners will be randomly assigned within reading levels!

Each individual player should read at least one book per week!

Game Play

In Game Night Connect Four, played on a traditional 6x7 grid, the purpose is to fill in the empty spaces by reading books fitting the given tasks, thus placing a game piece in an empty spot. The object is to get four in a row, either horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, and to prevent your opponent from doing the same.

Unlike in the traditional game of Connect Four, we keep going until the grid is full or the month is over.

The grid is filled from the bottom to the top; ie. if A3 is empty, you can't place your game piece in B3. And if row A is full, you can't place a piece on that row anymore.

To place your game piece in an empty spot:
1. Read a book that works for either a row or column task, OR
2. Read a book that works for both a row and column task.

Each space is filled by reading ONE book, not two!

Can't get four in a row? No worries, you'll still score points with every game piece you place in the grid!

1 point: A book that works for either a line OR column task.
2 points: Abook that works for both a line AND column task.
4 points: Four in a row!

 Marla | 4789 comments Let's Go Bowling!

A game of bowling consists of ten frames. In each of the first nine frames, the bowler will have two chances to knock down as many pins as possible with their bowling ball. (view spoiler)

Reserve your bowling lane (tracking spot) below.

Each book you read for this challenge will be considered one ball thrown.

Using your book, determine which pins you knocked down. For a pin to be knocked down with your ball, the book must fit (at least) one option under the task options for that pin.

When you bowl, some pins are easier to knock down than others. With that in mind, some pins have more options in which to fit your book than others do.

NOTE: For this challenge you can use the books you read in February in ANY order. While this is different from an actual game of bowling, it will allow for you to pair up books for spares or to achieve consecutive strikes. Three and four consecutive strikes earns a bonus card. Play around with which frame to place each book in to achieve spares as opposed to pairing books which would result in pins remaining standing after two balls and to line your strikes up so that, if you have three or four, you can earn the bonus cards!

Pins Tasks: (view spoiler)

 Marla | 4789 comments MASH

Did you ever play MASH? I predicted myself married to various members of New Kids on the Block, the cast of 90210 and many hair metal band lead singers as I grew up. It was a great way to waste time and a staple at sleepovers.

Rather than use pen and paper to play Book MASH, we'll be using wheels. You'll have the opportunity to predict up to four futures for yourself.

Here's how to play/rules:
1) Reserve your spot in the thread
2) Spin each wheel to get your tasks. There are four wheels: type of residence, book boyfriend, place to live and your career
3) Read the corresponding task to "earn" your choice.
4) You cannot repeat tasks. Each future must have a different outcome.
5) For each book boyfriend and place to live, you may opt to read the book/series that boyfriend is from, instead of reading the associated task. Character must be featured in that book to count.

Trading Cards will be earned as follows:
Completed 4 books (1 future)
Completed 8 books (2 futures)
Completed 12 books (3 futures)
Completed 16 books (4 futures)

Apartment: MC lives in an apartment OR has a roommate.

 Marla | 4789 comments Hi-Ho! Cherry-O

Hi-Ho! Cherry-O challenges you to be the first player to gather your crop of 10 cherries from your cherry tree and get them into your bucket. The game comes with 4 trees, 4 buckets, 40 cherries, and a spinner. Before the game begins, each player chooses their own cherry tree, 10 cherries, and a bucket. Put the 10 cherries on your tree and you’re ready to go.

For the purposes of game night, you will be using this spinner to read books and gather cherries to fill your bucket. The goal is to get 10 cherries by the end of the month.

Marla | 4789 comments Duck, Duck, Goose

Duck Duck Goose is a children's game often played in elementary school or at birthday parties. A group of players sit in a circle, facing inward, while another player, who is "it", walks around tapping or pointing to each player in turn, calling each a "duck" until finally calling one a "goose". The "goose" then rises and tries to tag the "it", while the "it" tries to return to and sit where the "goose" had been sitting before. If "it" succeeds, the "goose" becomes the "it" and the process begins again. If the "goose" tags the "it", the "goose" may return to their previous spot and the original "it" restarts the process.

In the July COTM, you will be playing a game of Duck Duck Goose against yourself. Can you complete the tasks before you are it? Let's find out.

 Marla | 4789 comments Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest only comes around once a year, so let’s spend this month celebrating it all month long!

Oktoberfest is set in Germany every year.
🔴 Read a book with a red cover OR
🟡 Read a book with a yellow cover

It’s not a beer festival
Contrary to popular belief, Oktoberfest – or “Wiesn”, to the locals – is not a beer festival, but the anniversary celebration of the wedding between Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig and his wife, Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. When the love birds hitched in 1810, the royals commemorated the event with a public party where not a single drop of the liquid gold was spilled!
🥂 Read a book with a wedding scene OR
🥂 A book with royalty

It has an alternative side
Believe it or not, there’s much more to Oktoberfest than booze. Music is a very important factor in the celebrations, with every alcohol tent featuring brass bands playing a mix of reworked chart hits from the likes of the Black Eyed Peas alongside traditional German Oompah classics.
🎶 Read a book with music as a main plot (can be musician or going to a concert) OR
🎶 Read a book that was a NYT best seller

It doesn’t start in October
Over the years there’s been a shift to an earlier, hopefully sunnier mid-September start, with the whole festival starting this year on September 16th, and finishing on October 3rd, when 12 riflemen will sound a salute on the steps of the plainly named Bavaria Statue.
🍁 Read a book that spans two or more months (can be flashbacks) OR
🍁 Read a book with the authors initials found in SEPTEMBER

The lost and found office is a proverbial treasure chest
Naturally for such an inebriated spectacle, the Oktoberfest Lost and Found office is stuffed every year with thousands of abandoned goods, and 2013 was one for the history books.

Beyond the usual suspects last year – including 1056 passports, 520 wallets, 320 mobile phones, 300 bags and rucksacks, and 50 cameras – there were some more peculiar finds, such as two wedding-rings, a hearing-aid, a set of false teeth, a tombstone shaped like a pencil and a Segway.

And, for the lost claims, one unfortunate beer tippler claimed that they lost 50.000 Euros in cash. We assume they drank it.
💰 Read a book where something is lost OR
💰 Read a book where someone travels to a far away place

Munich beer only.
Oktoberfest is, above all, a celebration of Bavarian traditions, so the only beer you’ll find during the festival is brewed within the city limits of Munich. Only beers that fit this criteria are considered Oktoberfest Beers.
🍺 Read a book that starts with a letter in BAVARIA or
🍺 Read book a local to you

It is a 204-year-old tradition
📅 Read a book with a 4 in the page number OR
📅 Read a book set in history

Locals call it “Wiesn”.
It’s named after the Theresienwiese, which is the name of the land where it takes place, and it’s also named after Therese, the Princess that was married there. It’s pronounced as “Vizen”
👑 Read a book with a one word title OR
👑 Read a book with a female main character

Nobody raises their mug until the Mayor says so.
Since 1950, the festival has only started after the official gun salute and the mayor shouting O’ zapft is! (“It’s tapped!”) and offering the first mug to the Minister-President of the State of Bavaria. Only after that, the festival can start.
🍻 Read a book with an important (president, CEO, famous person) main character OR
🍻 Read a book with a 5 in the publication date

The hairier the hat, the wealthier the wearer.
During Oktoberfest, traditional visitors wear Bavarian hats (Tirolerhüte). The more tufts of goat hair on your hat, the wealthier you are considered to be.
🎩 Read a book with a hat on the cover OR
🎩 Read a book with a rich character

There’s an on-site Red Cross tent. And it’s usually full! In 2018, at least 5,800 people needed medical attention.
🏥 Read a book set in a hospital OR
🏥 Read a book with the author initials founds in RED CROSS

There are 14 large beer hall tents.
The most famous one is Schottenhamel because it’s where the mayor taps the first keg and the biggest one is Hofbräu-Festhalle which seats almost 11,000 people.
⛺️ Read a book with a 1 or 4 in the page number OR
⛺️ Read the first book in a series

Marla | 4789 comments The Santa Claus Game

santa board

Each player has 5 gifts and must give them all away before Christmas ends or (in our case) December ends.

There is no ending spot on the board - keep rolling and moving along until you give away all of your gifts. There are special spaces along the way where you will have a specific task to read before moving on. When you come to an intersection on the board, you can go any direction available (except backwards).

To move along the board, roll the die and move forward that many spaces.

Roll a 1 ~ give away a gift by reading the below task
🌟bear - read a book with all the letters of BEAR in the title
🌟doll - read a book with all the letters of DOLL in the title
🌟stocking - read a book with feet on the cover, at least two
🌟puppy - read a book with a pet on the cover or in the book
🌟wrapped surprise - read a book that you received as a gift or was recommended to you

Land on a blank space ~ read a book with title, author names or series starting with a letter in SANTA CLAUS

Land on a special space ~ read for the task before moving on
🌟Ho! Ho! Ho! - Do your best Santa laugh and read a book with a person smiling/laughing (must see teeth)
🌟Music notes - Sing a few lines of a holiday song and read a book tagged music, has a musical instrument on the cover or has a character who sings/plays an instrument
🌟Snowflake - Twirl like a snowflake and read a book with snow on the cover or whose title/author names/series start with S
🌟Red boots - kick your heels together and read a book with red on the cover
🌟Christmas tree - choose to give away one of your presents and read the task for it (above list)

You may read and roll as you go or you can roll all at once until you given away all 5 of your gifts then plug in your books. You do not have to read in order if you roll all at once. It's up to you.

You can collect a trading card for participation and for completing 3, 6, 9 or 12+ tasks/books

Happy (Un)Birthday to You

rabbit

Alice: "I'm sorry I interrupted your birthday party. Thank you."
March Hare: "Birthday? My dear child, this is NOT a birthday party."
Mad Hatter: "Of course not. This is an unbirthday party."

Is today your birthday? One in 366 chances it is, since this is a leap year . . . but if the odds make it not so, Happy Happy Unbirthday to You!

Reserve your spot below and read these tasks based on your date of birth, on birthday parties and on birthday games.

❄ 🍹 ❄ 🥂 ❄ 🍹 ❄ 🥂 ❄ 🍹 ❄ 🥂 ❄ 🍹 ❄ 🥂 ❄ 🍹 ❄ 🥂 ❄ 🍹 ❄ 🥂 ❄ 🍹 ❄ 🥂 ❄ 🍹 ❄

#1. Guest of Honor . . . YOU!
Read a book where the author's first name initial is the same as yours or the author's last name initial is the same as yours. Or if you don't want to use yours, you can use mine. S.B.
Alice said you could use hers, but wouldn't share her last name (I've heard tell that it is Lidell)

#2. The Big Day
Read a book published on the month, day, or year of your birth.
Example : My Birthday is February 29, 1900.
Read a book published in February, a book published on the 29th of any month, or a book published in 1900.
That makes me almost 30 since February 29th only happens once every four years

#3. Who to Invite?! Invite some friends. Read two books you found on a shelf of a Goodreads friend. Cannot use the same friend for both.
Tweedledee
Tweedledum
The Mods would like to be your friend. The Caterpillar too, but he won't share his hookah

#4. Party Decorations! . . . Balloons, Streamers, Banners, etc
Read a book with DECORATE (-s, -ed, - ing, -tion(s), -tive, -or) found in the text.
The White Rabbit offered to help with the decorating but I guess he's late for an important date.

#5. Party Food! . . . Cake, Ice Cream, and . . . Tea?
Cake! -- Read a book with all letters of CAKE found in the title/subtitle
Ice Cream! -- Read a book that makes you scream (your interpretation)
Tea! -- Read a book with a title that starts with a T (easy peasy)
The Mad Hatter thanks you for your choice of drink

#6. Party Games . . . Three-Legged Race, Pin the . . . , Musical Chairs
Three-Legged Race -- Read a book that has a 3 in the page count
Pin the __________ on the __________ --So many variations to this one, and your book title will give us yet another one. Read a book with a book title that has the words "on the" intact in the title and fills in the blanks to rename this game.
Example : The Girl on the Train, Murder on the Orient Express
Does not work : On the Road (no word to fill in first blank)
Musical Chairs -- Read a book with a chair on the cover
The Queen of Hearts is quite disappointed you didn't plan a game of croquet. Off with your head!

#7. Gifts! -- My gift to you . . .
Read a book of choice.
A very generous gift indeed. May all your presents be this wonderful!

Color Wheel

Happy March all! And welcome to the Wheel of Color!

🌈How to play:

* Below there are links to two separate wheels *a color wheel and *a title wheel.
* Spin both wheels
* If you can find a book to fit both wheels you will earn two 2 points and if you can find a book to fit only one wheel you will earn one 1 point.
* You will earn a trading card when you earn three points, six points, nine points, and 12 points (so technically you could earn all the trading cards and only read six books).
* * Color Wheel if the book is 50% of the color listed on the wheel you are good, please use your own discretion. If you were pointing at the book and you would call it a white book then it is a white book.
* * Title Wheel A word in the title needs to match what’s on the wheel. For example proper name then there needs to be a name like Berit in the title (you get big bonus points for that one). Or if it’s season then there needs to be summer, winter, spring, or autumn/fall in the title.
* *** after you finish the first book come back and repeat and spin again!

Indianapolis 500 Traditions

As we roll into May (pun intended based on the challenge theme...), one of the things I'm most sad about missing out on is the Indianapolis 500 Race. Indy is my home town and I still live just outside of it. It's a tradition in our family to go to the practices and the race every year... as it is for many thousands of family and friends in the state (and surrounding states). The people watching is almost as fun as the race watching!

It's motto/tagline is so true: The Greatest Spectacle in Racing! It truly is such a spectacular event with all of it's traditions:

🏁 The 33 Indianapolis 500 Festival Princesses selected in the months leading up to the race
🏁 The Indianapolis 500 Festival Parade through downtown Indy with all 33 drivers and Princesses riding on the Official Pace Cars
🏁 Purdue All-American Marching Band performing the morning of the race
🏁 Parade of former winners around the track
🏁 Singing of Back Home Again in Indiana
🏁 Singing of God Bless America
🏁 Releasing of the balloons
🏁 Driver introductions
🏁 Singing of the National Anthem
🏁 The Flyover
🏁 Those famous words: Lady and Gentleman, Start Your Engines!
🏁 Winner's Circle drinking of milk
🏁 Kissing the Yard of Bricks

It gives me goosebumps just thinking about it all!

Can't WAIT for next year now!

Tasks:

We can't attend this year's race but we can still experience all those spectacular traditions!

This challenge is an Olympic Qualifier event. Each trading card will give you 1 point in your Olympic Qualifying points. This challenge will earn you up to 4 cards.

Traditions leading up to the race:

The 33 Indianapolis 500 Festival Princesses selected in the months leading up to the race

The 500 Festival Princess Program celebrates Indiana’s most civic-minded, academically driven young women. Each year, 33 college-aged women are selected as 500 Festival Princesses and serve as ambassadors of the 500 Festival, their hometowns, and their colleges/universities. Serving provides young women with once-in-a-life-time experiences and countless opportunities for leadership and professional development. In the months leading up to May, 500 Festival Princesses are involved with statewide outreach programs, including visits to hospitals, schools and various youth programs. Princesses will attend and volunteer at all 500 Festival events throughout the month of May, are present at various Indianapolis Motor Speedway functions, and participate in the pre-race ceremonies and Victory Circle celebration for the Indianapolis 500.

Before the singing commences and drivers are announced, there is a parade of former Indy 500 winners around the track. They are taken around on pace cars and vintage race cars housed in the IMS Hall of Fame Museum. It's equally spectacular to see former race favorites as wells as cars from the 1920s, 30s. 50s. and so on still able to drive the 2.5 mile oval.

Until her death in 2016, Florence Henderson sang 23 times since 1991 during Indianapolis 500 pre-race festivities and recently served as Grand Marshal for the historic 100th Running of the Race. Another beloved figure as a race day tradition in Indianapolis.

Singing of Back Home Again in Indiana

Except for a handful of years, Jim Nabors performed the singing of this Indiana state song until his death in 2017. Whether or not you liked his character Gomer Pyle or his singing, he definitely became one of the most beloved figures in Indiana as one of the race day traditions. In the years since his death, the song has been performed by Straight No Chaser, Josh Kaufman and most recently Jim Cornelison.

Releasing of the balloons

It is believed that 1947 was the first year for the release of multi-colored balloons on race morning and that it was Tony Hulman’s mother, Grace Smith Hulman, who made the suggestion. By 1950, the release had been timed to coincide, as it does to this day, with the final notes of Back Home Again In Indiana.

Singing of the National Anthem

Like most other sporting events, the national anthem is performed before the race by a notable vocalist. Prior to the mid-1980s, the anthem was performed by the Purdue All-American marching band. Then in the mid-80s, the Speedway began inviting notable artists to perform the national anthem. In nearly all cases, they would be backed by the Purdue Band. Recent performers include LeAnn Rimes, Jordin Sparks, Darius Rucker and Kelly Clarkson

The Flyover

The singing of the National Anthem culminates in a military flyover usually in the missing man formation in honor of Memoral Day. 2019 saw a double flyover when 2 of 4 the USAF Heritage Flight of 4 vintage planes raced around the track for second pass and the F-16 shot up in the air and performed a 'quick climb' maneuver.

Those famous words: Lady and Gentleman, Start Your Engines!

A member of the Hulman family has delivered the call for the engines to start since 1955. Most recently the command has been given by Tony George, grandson to Tony Hulman, to carry on the tradition

Winner's Circle drinking of the milk (or just pour it on your head)

One of the most enduring Indy 500 traditions started as a piece of mother's wisdom and was hyped up as a marketing ploy. Louis Meyer believed his mother when she said that drinking buttermilk would refresh him on a hot day, and so he drank some in Victory Lane in 1936 following his third victory. A dairy industry executive thought the glass bottle contained regular milk and saw a perfect way to tie his product with one of the country's most popular events. Since then, milk has been a part of almost every since victory celebration, including every year since 1956.

🏁 where someone wins a something (a competition, a prize, etc)

Kissing the Yard of Bricks

Though not the original surface, bricks were used to pave the track in 1909 (months after the track was first built). It stayed that way through the 50s though repairs and improvements covered or replaced over half the brick. In 1961 the entire track was resurfaced in asphalt save one yard of bricks at the start finish line. During the 2000 track renovations, that yard was moved inside the track. But it's still tradition for the winning team to pose kissing the bricks during the victory celebration.
