Le Tour de France

The 2020 Tour de France was scheduled to begin June 27* in Nice. The race was to have 21 stages and 2 rest days before finishing in Paris on July 19. The terrain alternates between flat, hilly and mountains, with stages usually between 122 - 218 km (76 - 135 miles).

During the race, the very best riders battle it out for the yellow, green, white and polka-dot Tour de France jerseys:
The yellow jersey (maillot jaune) is worn by the overall leader of the race.
The green jersey (maillot vert) is worn by the winner of 'mini-sprint' competitions within the race.
The white jersey with red polka dots is worn by the King of the Mountains, the first rider to reach the crest of designated hills and mountains.
The white jersey is worn by the fastest overall rider under 25.

*Large-scale events were banned in France until mid-July, so the organisers of the Tour de France have decided to postpone the Tour de France to Saturday 29th August to Sunday 20th September 2020.

Wheel of Fortune

Wheel of Fortune is a game show that debuted in 1975. The show features a competition in which contestants solve word puzzles, similar to those used in Hangman, to win cash and prizes determined by spinning a giant carnival wheel.

A contestant spins the wheel to determine a dollar value and guess a consonant. It also allows the contestant to spin again, buy a vowel for a flat rate of $250, or attempt to solve the puzzle. Contestants may continue to buy vowels so long as they have enough money to keep doing so, until all of the vowels in the puzzle have been revealed.

Currently, there are sixty international adaptations!

To play, spin the wheel and see what wedge you land on, read a book that fits any of the tasks for that particular wedge.
* If you land on the million dollar wedge, your total money earned doubles and you choose one of the tasks given
* If you land on the bankrupt wedge, your round money earned is lost.
* Each round will be three spins, after those three spins your money is locked and cannot be taken away from a bankrupt.
* Can repeat tasks if you land on same wedge again
* Free play means read a book of your choice AND it blocks a bankrupt during that round.
* Books must be complete during the month of August
* Standard Game Night Rules Apply

I've made a slight change in rules in case people want to utilize it! This may make it easier for people that aren't reading as many books in a month that don't fit the challenges:

If you read a book earlier in the month during a previous round that did not fit in that particular round, you may backdate and use the old book for the current round. But you may only use a book once for the challenge.

What's In a Title?

This month is all about reading books with common words in the title! Spin the wheel as many times as you want and see how many books you can read with those words in the title. You can use multiple words for one title if you find a book that fits multiple!

1 point per word in title
1 extra point if you use multiple words in title (so 3 points if you use 2 words, 4 points if you use 3 words etc)

There will be trading cards for 3 points, 6 points, 9 points, and 12 points.

You can spin however you'd like, if you want to spin for only 3 words and try to get as many of those words in one title, you can. If you want to spin 15 times and only use one word per title, that is also completely fine!

* Books must be complete during the month of October
* Standard Game Night Rules Apply

Thanksgiving Day Beer Run

map

It's Thanksgiving and I've invited you all over to my house. You are quite welcome, by the way.

I'm not much of a hostess though because as long as I have an ample supply of Diet Coke, I'm just fine.

Guess it's time for a . . . BEER RUN

Objective : Travel from Sandi's to one of the four stores (represented by the red squares) and attempt to make your purchase so you can return to Sandi's for the Thanksgiving festivities.
🍗 To participate in this challenge, reserve your spot below.
🍗 All books used in this challenge must meet the Standard Book Requirements!
🍗 Read a minimum of 3 books in this challenge to count as complete in the Challenge of the Month Challenge

Start : Sandi's house. Middle of the game board. Let's start simple and read a book with a title that begins with a letter found in SANDI. Using the page count for the book you read for this space, determine how many spaces to move. (If you read an edition that does not have a page count, click on the "all editions" link and use the first one that does have a page count.)
🍗 If page count ends with a 0, 1, 5, or 7, move forward 1 space
🍗 If page count ends with a 2, 4, or 8, move forward 2 spaces
🍗 If page count ends with a 3, 6, or 9, move forward 3 spaces

Purple Spaces : You have encountered car trouble . . . or perhaps you left your mask behind and don't want to risk fierce mask mandate demands. In either case, read two books. Each book must fit a different task (i.e. you cannot read for the same task twice) found in the first two rounds of the Mr. Jones' Graveyard Shift challenge.
🍗 If you read two books from the round one options, move forward one space.
🍗 If you read two books from the round two options, move forward two spaces.
🍗 If you read one book from the round one options and one book from the round two options, move forward three spaces.

Blue Grey Spaces : Read a book that fits a task in Character Section of the Santa's Bag challenge. Move forward the same amount of spaces as the character card is worth.

Green Spaces : Read a book that fits a task in Toy Section of the Santa's Bag challenge. Move forward the same amount of spaces as the toy card is worth.

Yellow Spaces : Read a book that fits a task (other than the .01 multiplier option) in Battle Round #7 of the Turf Wars: Los Angeles challenge.
🍗 If you read a .02 option, move forward one space
🍗 If you read a .03 option, move forward two spaces
🍗 If you read a .04 option, move forward three spaces

Orange Spaces : Read a book that fits a .03 or .04 task in Battle Round #7 of the Turf Wars: Australia challenge.
🍗 If you read a Pilbara option, move forward one space
🍗 If you read a Mt. Gambier option, move forward two spaces
🍗 If you read a Winton option, move forward three spaces

Red Spaces : These spots are the stores. If your token movement would take you beyond this space, stop here anyway. Read a book that fits a task in the Are We There Yet? challenge.

When you finish your book for this square, check in at the Store Check In thread.

Possible Scenarios
🍗 Successful beer purchase. Make your way back to Sandi's
🍗 Store closed on Thanksgiving. Visit another store.
🍗 Store out of beer. Visit another store.
🍗 Cashier was too young to sell alcohol; visit another line in same store to make your purchase. (which means you'll need to read another book from the task options in this list before you can head back to Sandi's)

Match Game is one of my favorite vintage game shows! There have been many versions over the years but the original in the 70s with Gene Rayburn is still the best in my humble opinion. Alec Baldwin hosts currently and he's not too bad either ;-)

The object of the game was for contestants to match answers to crazy, silly, sometimes downright naughty questions with the celebrity guests. The winner went on to bonus rounds with a chosen guest to match with and then an audience match. Those rounds weren't as funny with simple phrases that didn't really lend themselves to off-the-wall answers.

In the book version, you will spin a wheel to get a question. You will submit that question and your single word answer in the Answers thread. I will respond to you in your own thread (that you create) whether you made a match and which mod you matched!

Tasks will be related to the question and matched answer. If you failed to make a match you will read a task that is specific to not making a match and will be the same throughout the game.

Cards will be earned for reading 3, 6, 9 books and also for making 3, 6, 9 matches with the mods.

Sign up below with your name and your game thread - just click on New Topic from the game folder, enter the name of your thread and save. If you need help making a thread, let me know.

To make the game fun and fair for everyone, please DON'T peak at other people's threads to sneak a look at matched answers. This is on your honor, of course, but isn't it more fun to match your own wits against the mods instead of taking someone else's answer?

Left - Center - Right

Left - Center - Right (or LCR) is a dice game played with 3 or more players where the object of the game is to be the last player standing, or the last one with any chips!

Each player is given 3 chips to start the game - but it can be played with beans or MnMs (YUM) or pennies or if you're really brave, dollar bills. If playing with money, each person provides their own bills, of course, and the winner wins the Center pot at the end. So playing with money can be fun AND rewarding!

There are 3 dice, each with the letters L, C, R and Dots on the sides. As the dice are rolled, the results dictate the player's actions:
L = the player gives one chip to the player on their Left
C = the player gives one chip to the Center pot
R = the player gives one chip to the player on their Right
Dots = these are neutral and the player does nothing for that die

Each player rolls the number of dice as the number of chips they have left and they give away the number of chips based on their dice roll: For instance, if they roll 2 Ls and a C, they give away 2 chips to the left and 1 to the center pot.

If a player has no chips left, they are not out of the game but pass the dice roll to the next person.

The winner is the last person with a chip left and they do not need to roll again (or the game might never end!)

LCR is a fun family game that can be played as an adult or child - any age can play and the only skill needed is know your left from your right!

🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲

For Game Night's LCR game, you will roll 3 dice every time and read based on your dice roll. You'll never lose chips in our game so you're always a winner ;-)

LCR Dice roller - This virtual roller has only one die, so you will need to roll 3 times for each 'turn'.

For each 'turn' you have in this game you will read 3 books based on your rolls. The tasks for each possible result is below.

You can play as many turns as you want until you either run out of books to read or the month runs out!

You can roll ahead if you wish but you must finish each 'turn' (3 books) before you read for the next roll.

You will earn a participation trading card by completing 3 books and a card for completing 6, 9 or 12 books.

🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲

LCR Dice roller - This virtual roller has only one die, so you will need to roll 3 times for each 'turn'.

Read a book based on your roll results for each 'turn'. Choose any task for each die roll result (L, R, C or DOT) - you may repeat them anytime.

You must finish each 'turn' - read 3 books for the associated tasks - before moving to the next turn.

Wingspan is a competitive card-driven board game from Stonemaier Games. It's designed by Elizabeth Hargrave and features over 170 beautiful bird cards illustrated by Beth Sobel, Natalia Rojas, and Ana Maria Martinez.

You play as bird enthusiasts—researchers, bird watchers, ornithologists, and collectors—seeking to discover and attract the best birds to your network of wildlife preserves.

Choose the bird cards that you like the best, and collect those cards by reading one of the tasks for each card. There are twenty cards to chose from, but you only have to collect twelve to complete this Challenge of the Month.

This Challenge begins January 1, 2022. Any books completed before January 1, 2022 will not count for this challenge.

Marla | 4789 comments 2022 April Challenge of the Month
🌦🌦🌦April Weather Challenge🌦🌦🌦

A fun SPIN on the weather!!! Below are two links to two different weather wheels. One has the forecast and the other has the temperature.

☀️ Spin both wheels get your forecast and your temperature.

️☀️ The forecast wheel will have terms such as sunny, windy, snow etc. Find the word/s in the text of your book.
*** in the case of two words in the forecast, the words do NOT need to be consecutive in the text of your book, they both however do need to be somewhere in your book.

☀️ The temperature wheel has numbers such as 80°, 54°, 72°, etc. One of these numbers needs to be in the page count of the book you read.

☀️ If your book meets both the forecast and the temperature criteria you earn 2 points. If your book only meets one of the criteria you earn *you guessed it* 1 point.

☀️ You can collect a trading card when you earn three,6, nine, and 12 points.

Marla | 4789 comments 2022 June Challenge of the Month - Dixit

June challenge of the month. (June 1 - June 30)
All books used must meet Game Night's Standard Book Requirements.
Reserve your spot below.

Dixit is a charades-like game where each player attempts to guess another player’s card based on a single clue.

From March 2020 to May of 2020 this was hosted as a team challenge (details found here.) As there were 6 teams that each held 9 trading cards at the end of the challenge that were not used, I thought I'd recycle the challenge as an individual challenge and offer up some of those trading cards.

A brief rundown of how it worked with the team challenge: Each team was dealt 10 cards. Each week there would be a designated storyteller team. That team was responsible for three things; giving me the card they chose to play that round, give a word or phrase that they somehow associated with the card they played, and provide me with the three tasks that players could choose from to read for that round.

All other teams then chose a card from their hand that they somehow associated with the clue given. All teams (except the storyteller team) would vote for which card they thought belonged to the storyteller team, and points would be awarded based on several factors.

For this individual challenge, complete one of the three task options for each of the twelve rounds that were played and then collect a trading card of your choice for each round you complete. Rounds can be completed in any order.

Marla | 4789 comments 2022 August Challenge of the Month - Hopscotch

Hopscotch is a popular playground game in which players toss a small object, usually a small stone, into a pattern of numbered squares outlined on the ground and then hop or jump through the squares and retrieve the object. It can be played by any number of people and the object of the game is to be the first to successfully navigate the hopscotch and retrieve the small stone from each of the numbered squares.

Traditional Play:
🔹Each player in turn tosses a stone into a numbered square, starting with square one. They then hop through each numbered square (usually through 10), hopping over the stone on the way out and picking it up on the way back.

🔹If the player misses the toss or the stone touches a line, play passes to the next player in line and the player goes to the back of the line.

🔹Players advance through the hopscotch pattern by hopping on the empty squares (hopping over the square with their stone), balancing on one foot in single squares and both feet in side-by-side squares.

🔹If the player loses their balance or steps on a line, play passes to the next player and they go to the back of the line. On their next turn, they must repeat tossing to the same numbered square until they successfully navigate the hopscotch for that number.

In this Game Night version, you will be 'virtually' hopping through the hopscotch starting with tossing your stone into square 1. The wheel will decide the outcome of your turn: will you miss? lose your balance? step on a line? or successfully hop through the course picking up your stone? Whichever outcome you spin, you will read a book for the stated task.

Keep track of your turns here in the thread. You may play as many turns as you'd like up through reading for square 10. This may take you 10 turns or 12 or 20... depends on how well you 'toss your stone' and 'hop' through the course!

This is an individual challenge running August 1-31.
There will be trading cards for participation and reading 3, 6, 9 and 12 books.

Marla | 4789 comments 2022 September Challenge of the Month - Let's Head To The Fair

World Fun Fair Month is celebrated in September every year in countries across the world. Fun fairs provide great entertainment for those visiting and allow people to have fun and create great memories. The month aims to show appreciation to the many showmen who partake in the events at the fair and to uphold and celebrate all aspects of the fairground tradition. Showmen from the U.K., Europe, North America, and Australasia join hands and work together to ensure that the event is a truly global and memorable one.

Rules

There are 15 tasks, but you only need to read 3, 6, 9 or 12 books.

Follow the Standard Book Requirements .

That's it. If you have a question, just post here. I will check once a day.

PLAY SOME GAMES:

1) Ring Toss - One sound you will invariably hear at some place along the midway is rings careening off glass bottles. It’s called the ring toss. Prize aspirations are awarded based on your ability to get a plastic ring to fall gently around the neck of a glass bottle.

The ring toss is a true test of finger dexterity and hand-eye coordination. Each bottle or peg wins a certain prize. There are bottles towards the center, plus certain colored bottles strategically placed to add difficulty. These often award the larger prizes.

2) Basketball free Throw - Talented basketball players have been frustrated by this midway game. It appears to be a game of skill that would be a snap for an accurate free throw shooter. The basketball free throw game follows the same concept as the real act of shooting free throws, but there is a twist. Often, the balls used have an enhanced rubbery activity added.

They’ll have a little more air than normal to promote dead-eye accuracy. The rim is usually slightly tighter than a normal rim. However, applying an extra soft touch and some strategic aim, anyone can win with a few lucky bounces.

3) Balloon Pop - Another popular sound along fair and carnival midways is the sound of a balloon bursting. This is another fair game that awards prizes according to your ability to target a balloon with pinpoint dartboard-type accuracy.

Contestants are handed three or four darts. Ahead of you is a wall full of air-filled balloons. Set your aim, because most games have a rather difficult margin of error. If you can pop a balloon with every dart in your hand, you’re usually a prize winner.

4) High striker - Artists have drawn renderings of this legendary midway spectacle. It is known to carnival and fair enthusiasts as the high striker. It is deemed the ultimate test of human strength. While the test-of-strength game doesn’t always award a prize, it is one of the most popular.

This is one of the many places along the midway where you’ll hear the magical words, “step right up”! Eager on lookers will watch as you take a large mallet and whack a spring-loaded platform. The goal is to show your strength by skyrocketing a puck up through a vertical column and ring the bell.

Read a book with a tool on the cover (Baseball bat, gun, fishing pole, hammer, axe... etc)

EAT SOME FOOD:

5) Boiled Peanuts - Boiled peanuts may sound gross, but… ah, who are we kidding? They’re totally weird, and we almost guarantee you won’t like them on your first try - especially if you’re used to the crunchy kind. But as most Southerners will tell you, it’s an acquired taste, and once you start enjoying boiled peanuts, you’ll never go back to regular ones again.

Read a book where the letters from P E A N U T S can be found in the title. (letters do not have to be in order)

6) Caramel & Candy Apples - Like regular apples, caramel and candy apples seem to have a season that runs from the late spring to the late fall. We can’t really explain it, since apples are usually available year-round, but we suppose absence makes the heart grow fonder. In addition to the regular caramel – and candy-dipped varieties, there are also versions covered in nuts or drizzled with chocolate and/or white chocolate.

Read a book with any kind of fruit on the cover.

7) Churros - Churros are a choux-based, sugar-covered pastry popular in Spain, Portugal, France, and the Southwestern United States (Arizona, New Mexico, California, Colorado, Nevada, Oklahoma, Texas, and Utah). They make for perfect fair food because they are long, thin, and sturdy, so you can easily eat them one-handed while checking out rides or playing carnival games (just don’t bring them onto the actual ride). If you have the opportunity to get a dipping sauce – such as chocolate or dulce de leche – you’d be a deep-fried fool to pass it up.

Read a book set in Spain, Portugal, France, or the Southwestern United States.

8) Corn Dog - Corn dogs aren’t just the quintessential fair food, they’re also the ultimate summer food. That’s because similar to churros, they’re easy to eat one-handed and are a lot less messy than their regular hot dog counterparts.

9) Cotton Candy/Fairy Floss- The New York Times once stated that the treat “is almost 99.999 percent sugar, with dashes of flavoring and food coloring.” Machine-spun cotton candy was invented back in 1897 by dentist William Morrison and confectioner John C. Wharton, who debuted it at the 1904 World's Fair as “Fairy Floss.” Morrison’s fellow dentists have been thanking him ever since.

Read a book with a page count of at least 2 numbers from 1897 or 1904 in the page count or publication date

10) Funnel Cake - Funnel cakes tend to have a unique shape and texture made up of intertwined squiggly lines created by the dough coming out of a funnel. Then it is fried and covered with sugar or other spices.

Book with any kind of dessert on the cover

11) Turkey Legs - You’re probably more likely to see turkey legs (especially the comically large ones) at Renaissances fairs rather than state or county ones, but all is fair when it comes to fairs. This might be the messiest meal in the slideshow, mainly because the best way to eat a moist, crispy turkey leg is to bite it like a barbarian that doesn’t care when the juices drip all over the place. Try to enjoy both the meat and the looks you’ll get while consuming it.

Read a book with some kind of bird on the cover

RIDE SOME RIDES:

12) Bumper Cars/Dodgems - Bumper cars were not intended to be bumped, hence the original name "Dodgem."

Read a book with some kind of ground vehicle on the cover

13) Ferris wheel - Ever snuck a kiss at the top?

Read a book with two people on the cover

14) Pirate Ship - Yo Ho Ho

Read a book with a boat on the cover

15) Roller coaster - Are you the type who likes a gentle roll or do you like to go screaming upside down?

Okay, when I saw the Boiled Peanuts, I had to play! I've been craving them for months. I tried to make some in the Instant Pot but overcooked them and they were inedible. We just bought them back home, so I've never made them. And it's hard to find raw peanuts.

Marla | 4789 comments November 2022 COTM - Happy Thanksgiving!

Did you know: There are at least 17 countries that celebrate their own version of Thanksgiving. Some of the festivities commemorate colonial migrations to the Americas and others celebrate the start of a new lunar cycle to welcome in the harvest season.

The traditions may be different but the underlying sentiment of all these holidays is the same: it’s a chance to spend time with friends and family and reflect on what’s most important in life.

To help you with your thankful attitude this year, spell out HAPPY THANKSGIVING by hunting for items on your book covers that correspond with the letters in the phrase.

How to play:
🦃 Read books
🦃 Find items on the covers that start with the letters in HAPPY THANKSGIVING
🦃 Books can be used up to two times (if you wish)
🦃 Items can only be used one time even if it is found on multiple books
🦃 Each letter must be a different item

You will earn cards for participation, reading 3 books, 6 books, 9 books and/or for spelling out the entire HAPPY THANKSGIVING phrase.
