This one will be unique for each of us but we can still discuss. How will you choose? The oldest book on your Goodreads shelf?

My dad has been trying to get me to read the Merlin series by Mary Stewart since I was in high school and I was obsessed with King Arthur legends. First book is The Crystal Cave. This is the year!
Yes, going with the oldest book on Goodreads TBR Case Histories by Kate Atkinson. Don't know why it's been there so long because I really do want to read it.
I'm going with the third-oldest on my TBR, Yes Please. It's actually one I've owned since it came out two years ago, and I still haven't picked it up.
I'm not sure how I'll choose for this! I'm constantly messing with my TBR list, there are books on it that I honestly don't really want to read, and then there are other books that I've been meaning to read for a long time, but never added to my TBR. I think I'll scroll through my TBR, starting at the beginning, and then just stop when I get to something I REALLY want to read.

Totally Nadine! Someone else on here mentioned they're challenging themselves to read 2 classics a month. I'm not that ambitious so I've planned for 12 classics throughout the challenge.
My second book that I added to my Good reads TBR is The Secret Keeper so this is what I am going with. The first book I added to my Goodreads TBR is Target.....honestly I don't know why I added it ....it doesn't really sound like something I would read.
I think I'll end up picking something that I've been meaning to read for years and years, even before Goodreads. War and Peace ... 2017 is your year! (I mistyped that initially to 2027 ... ugh ... I hope that's not a Freudian finger slip!!)

The newer one by a husband-and-wife team (she's Russian) is very good. (Pevear and Volokhonsky) However, I was a Russian lit major many years ago. Here's a good rundown of all available: http://ospidillo-blog.blogspot.com/20... It's really a great story, but I give you permission to skim the parts about military strategy unless that's your thing!

That's interesting - I didn't realize there had been so many translations, and I'm agog at the thought of someone having read ALL of them (some of them several times!). That's a lot of re-reading!! I just checked and my library has 1000+ listings for this book (including picture book versions, Cliffs Notes, essays on, etc etc etc), and the Garnett translation seems to be the most common.

Megan wrote: "My oldest shelved to-read book is Unwind. That's what I want to tackle for this one."That's been on my TBR shelf a long time too! Think I will tackle it as well!!
Nancy wrote: "Never Let Me Go. Been wanting to read this for a year or so."I loved that book, though I admit to reading it after seeing the film. They are both beautiful. I hope you do finally read it and that you enjoy it as much as I did!
I have wanted to read Memoirs of a Geisha since the moment I saw the movie. The movie was so amazing, I can just imagine how awesome the book must be.
I am going to read Eat, Pray, Love for this prompt. It is the second book I added to read on goodreads and I added it on the same day as my first choice lol.

Honestly, I didn't think the movie did it justice. So hopefully that means you will love the book even more than the movie :)
I loved the book Memoirs of a Geisha. Absolutely stunning! Enjoy it. I may have to read it again now that we are talking about it.
I've just finished The Five People You Meet in Heaven which has been sitting on my bedside table for at least three years. Maybe more. A good quick read that I should've knocked over ages ago!!I also love memoirs of a Geisha, a great read!
Enter The Mists of Avalon, stage rightMists: READ ME
Caity: (twelve years later) Fiiiiiine..
Mists: READ ME
Caity: (one year later) Crap. I should, shouldn't I?
Moloka'i - one of the earliest books I added as soon as I joined GR in 2009. Started today.Loving it so far at 30%.

LOL yes you should! I loved that book, but I read it a long time ago when I was in my early 20s - have no idea how I'd feel now.

Going to read A Purpose-Driven Life. Been on my TBR list for 5 1/2 years and starting it on Jan. 1 makes sense to me.
I might take this prompt as the opportunity to finally read some Dickens! (Other than a Christmas carol) Or failing that one of the texts that was literally on my reading list at university and that I managed to write essays on without actually reading ( I graduated in 2001!)
Just finished this prompt with the book Locally Laid: How We Built a Plucky, Industry-changing Egg Farm - from Scratch. I had bought it (at full price, which I never do!) a while ago and finally had a great motivator to read it. It's been a while since I've read anything so this was just what I needed to get my head back in the reading game. It's a cute book! But honestly, I have a TON of TBR books that would easily fit into this category. Half of my book collection is waiting for me to get around to them. :-\
The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry - Gabrielle ZevinCloud Atlas - David Mitchell
The Fall - Albert Camus
American Psycho - Bret Easton Ellis
The Notebook - Nicholas Sparks
Jane Eyre - Charlotte Brontë
Wuthering Heights - Emily Brontë
North and South - Elizabeth Gaskell
My literature teacher told me to read The Mill on the Floss when I was in college. She mentioned this book at every opportunity she got and told me that she loved reading Mill on the Floss during her college years. I admired her as a teacher and in wanting to be more like her, I'll be reading it for this prompt.
Memoirs of a Geisha was a book I didn't want to end. A friend gave me Mists of Avalon while I was recovering from knee surgery and I really enjoyed it. I think I might go with A Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. If fulfills a bunch of categories for Reader Harder, South American, far away. Or I could be really ambitious and attempt Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace again.
I've already started Neverwhere for this challenge! It's been on my TBR list for more than two years now...it's my first Neil Gaiman novel!

I listened to the Neverwhere audiobook last year, and I loved it so much I asked for (and received) the hardcover as a birthday gift. Haven't re-read it yet, because I'm not really a re-reader, but I will!
I just put The City of Ember on hold at my library - that will be my "book on my TBR list for too long."

I'm actually listening to the audiobook! I try to do books read by the author whenever I can. I'm about a 1/3 of the way through it right now and I'm really enjoying it. I drive all day long for work and audible makes it bearable.
I'm reading What Was She Thinking? Notes on a Scandal , which has been on my list since I started using GoodReads about a year and a half ago.

That's one of my possibilities for "unreliable narrator"!

I read The Origin of Species. The author was recommended to me in high school twenty years ago and this was the only one of his books my library has. Emma, I graduated university in 2001 and could do the same. I was a classical archaeology major and don't think I've ever read The Iliad or The Odyssey all the way through in order.
I picked All The Light We Cannot See... it's been on my TBR list for over a year, but I knew it would take some concentration so I kept putting it off. Finished it yesterday... so worth the read!
I've just started mine - I've gone for Oliver Twist because I love Dickens but I read too much a couple of years ago (when reading the BBC big read), so have had it sitting next to my bed for too long. So far so good :)
Oh, my land, I think I have hundreds of books to choose from for this one! I think I will take this opportunity to read one of the books I've purchased at various book signings over the years. It seems like every time I buy one, I'm already engrossed in some other book and don't get to it right away, so it goes on the shelf.
