Sarah (sarahlou29) | 1302 comments June, for now I've popped you down for Pets - 5 points. I'm thinking I may put you down for In Laws - 5 points too. Those are ones you didn't mind doing. I'll sort the rest out a bit later when were have the others check in =]

And I'd quite like to do College - 5 points, so searching for a book that goes now. I have a few it's just choosing one. Too much choice lol. I think it's between: Broken at Love or A Beautiful Struggle

Dawn, because you stated you can pretty much find a book for everything. I'll have to wait a bit to pace you. But for now is there anything in particular you really want to read?

message 102: by Jkmays (new)

Jkmays Sarah, I think I am good to do 2 plus the audio, so that is 3 altogether. So you can put me down for 3. I picked very short books (200 pages or so) so that should work for me. Don't know yet if I will be out of town for that week, so that might impact whether I can do more.

message 103: by Angie (new)

Angie Acosta (ang804) hi checking in...first time at this so pointers or tips would be helpful....I read pretty fast myself...any suggestions on how to start?..I feel like I need a chart to keep up...lol

message 104: by Sarah (last edited May 25, 2014 06:32AM) (new)

Sarah (sarahlou29) | 1302 comments Hi Angie, I'm making the chart right now =] But still waiting for other members to check in.

First off, maybe thinking about how mnay books you would liek to try and read in the toppler. And go check out the list of tasks HERE to choose from and see which books you have fit in =]

Come back here and report what you'd like to read and how many. And we'll go from there =]

Ookie dokie. Seeing as you'll listen to 'Housekeeping' and I'm not sure what it could come under either I'll pop that one in Lottery - 3 points. And I've put you in Retired - 5 points. So it' up to you do you want to read Your turn 16 book or Fresh start book?

message 106: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sarahlou29) | 1302 comments Oh Marnie, if you're still sure you'd like to keep a record of things. Maybe you could keep a record of what books people will be reading. Of course I'll have to show you the chart first, so you know what tasks people will be doing. So it won't be yet, but are you still up for that? And keeping track of points also? Maybe with Peggy's help.

message 107: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I'd be happy to help keep track of things. Just give a yell when I'm needed. Thanks for being so organized Sarah!

Lynn | 2987 comments Sarah - I've updated message 87 to help with your records

message 109: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sarahlou29) | 1302 comments That's great Lynn, Thank you =]

message 110: by Marnie (new)

Marnie (marnie19) | 3313 comments Sarah these are the categories and points I can fill ( in order of what I prefer) put me down for 5 books and if I can read more I will find a book that helps us the most.

My categories:

Go on a fabulous vacation (5)
Divorce (5)
Get a pet (3)
Lottery (5/3)
Same book could be Family reunion (5), Gets remarried (5), or buys a house (5)
Retire (5)
Get a pet (5)
Childhood (5)
College (5)

Put me where you need me Sarah and a big THANK YOU for organizing us!

message 111: by Jkmays (new)

Jkmays Ok, Sarah, I think I will read the Turn 16 Harry Truman's Excellent Adventure for my 3rd book. And as for Housekeeping, it might fit under Childhood (main character under 13) I think we need a ruling on that since it looks like the two sisters who are the main characters basically grow up throughout the book. If you don't have the Childhood under 13 slot filled, I will see how we can get a ruling on Housekeeping.

message 112: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4564 comments I'm going through my tbr looking for relatively short books to fit the categories and so far I've come up with the following:

Childhood: 5 points: The Chrysalids, The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake, Our Vines Have Tender Grapes
3 points: Labor Day, Charlotte's Web

Turn 16: 5 points: Lilac Bus
3 points: The Hours

College: 5 points: Intersections
3 points: The Big Clock, The Bird Eater I think,

Graduation: 5 points: The Persian Pickle Club (during the Depression someone has to be unemployed in this one),
3 points: Empty, Level 7, or The Long Tomorrow

Get Married: 5 points: ????
3 points: The Hours

Buy a House: 5 points: Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House
3 points: ????

Have a Baby: 5 points: The Cradle
3 points: ??

In-laws visit: 5 points: A Summons to Memphis
3 points: Mister B. Gone, The Bird Eater, The Clearing, or The Haunting of Hill House

Get a pet: 5 points: ????
3 points: Oogy: The Dog Only a Family Could Love

Fabulous Vacation: 5 points: The Maltese Goddess
3 points: Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress

Lose a Job: 5 points: The Clearing
3 points: Yellow Crocus

Divorce: 5 points: April in Paris
3 points: Still Life with Breadcrumbs

Lottery: 5 points: anything
3 points: anything

Remarry: 5 points: The Absent Woman, or Away
3 points: The Time Keeper

Retire: 5 points: Travels With My Aunt or To Live
3 points: Empty

That's it so far. I think I can do 3 if I keep them short. I really have no preferences since I'm going to read all of the above books eventually anyway, so just plug me in where you need me.

message 113: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sarahlou29) | 1302 comments Thanks Marnie. I'll let you know where I place you, but your defo in Family Reunion =]

Hmm, I had at least 1 person in each Life Stage, except: Have A Baby, both tasks and Lose your Job, both tasks. Any takers?

message 114: by Lilisa (new)

Lilisa | 2770 comments Goodness - I was having one heck of a time trying to figure these out - so many to choose from. It's a good thing today is Sunday - I've spent ages over coffee landing on these :-)!

Sarah - I was going through my TBR list and I'm going to commit to two books - fingers crossed! Here they are:

Get a Divorce: read a book that takes place in a war/civil conflict - Mornings in Jenin (5 points)
Get Remarried: read a book where someone makes a fresh start - Soy Sauce for Beginners (5 points)

Do these work?

Thanks Jkmays. Righteo I have you down for Turn 16 - has a car/driving in it, Retired - over 60 and Lottery for 3 points. Hope this is all good for you?

No worries on the childhood, waiting for a clarification of Peggy's book, if not Lynn.

If enough people have checked in later, I'll show you what I've come up with =]

message 116: by Sarah (new)

message 118: by Annette (new)

Annette Olsen | 205 comments Sarah....I can read either or both of those. If you want to use me to fill in the empty places I can find books that fit. I can read 5 books comfortably ...2 maybe 3 more if needed. Just let me know where you need me.

Sarah - I wonder if Soy Sauce for Beginners would qualify for the Lose Your Job category you're looking to fill. I don't know if the main character ends up in a new occupation, so if anyone has read book and can verify that would be great.

message 120: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sarahlou29) | 1302 comments Lilisa: 2 books is fine. Are there any others you couls do? We have a lot of takers for Get Married and Go on Vacation. Woud you mind doing any of the following: Read a book about a dog? Read a book where the main character is married? Read a book with drinking in? Read a book where the main character gives birth? Let me know. If you prefer not to don't worry.

And Thank you Annette, that's great. I may place you in one or both of those =] Any you really want to read?

I'm wondering, too. So first question I want to make sure of is this:

Is it correct that for each life event, we need to have a team member read one book for the 5 point task and read (at least) one book for the 3 point task?

Sorry I didn't see that message Dawn, but glad Tejas Janet did. Yes I just went and asked a question. Because I have filled all the 5 points and 3 points on the chart I made. So I'm wondering do we move onto the next chart. A complete reset OR, because we have multiple members wishing to do the same thing, so I put them down on my chart (the original 5 points would go down to 3 points the second time that task is read) and whether they get read twice on the same sheet or we move to a new one.. Urgh a bit confusing but does that make sense?

Yes, put me down for 3 at present. I might be able to work in more depending on what happens with jury duty. If I get tied up in a long court case, I doubt I can do more than 3. Have to wait and see.

I'll check with Jmom about book question re: Book of Harold. But in any case, I have a backup book that definitely works -- just have to find it in my tbr list!

Sarah - yes I will read a book about a dog - The Dogs of Christmas - how's that?

I have a question though - in msg 114 - I listed the war/civil conflict under Get a Divorce category and A fresh start in Get remarried category - aren't they different than the go on a Fabulous Vacation and Get Married categories? Let me know as I will need to choose a second book. Thanks for all the organizing!

message 127: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments That would be fine too Sarah. You can also put me there right now if that makes things easier. I believe there are more people who offered to do the child thing?

I've put you under the dog one and kept you for the Get A Divorce - 5 points: read a book about war/civil conflict. Is that okay?

Peggy wrote: "That would be fine too Sarah. You can also put me there right now if that makes things easier. I believe there are more people who offered to do the child thing?"

Hmm, I think that would actually be easier yes. Okay so instead of the Childhood. The place of residence on the cover =] Thank you

Sarah | 18550 comments Excellent work Sarah on the grid - looks great! So people have to read the 5pt and the 3pt and then the 5pt (which is reduced own to a 3pt) before the grid is reset?

message 135: by Marnie (last edited May 25, 2014 09:56AM) (new)

Marnie (marnie19) | 3313 comments Each task has a 5 point and a 3 point task. Both tasks must be completed in each category before we reset.

30 tasks per life. Then we reset.

Yeah I did wonder about that, because the grid currently seems to be set up for that .... of course Sarah may be waiting until the grid is filled before moving them over the second 3pt'er to the next grid.
If that makes sense, at least this one doesn't seem to be as complicated as Bingo! :)

message 137: by Kirila (new)

Kirila | 661 comments I would like to read The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared for Retire, because I need to return it on 14th June and still haven't started it. I think I can only do one book, but in case I finish it quickly, I will join for a second. And that one I can choose based on whatever gaps we have.

message 138: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sarahlou29) | 1302 comments Hi. Yeh I made the grid like that as I wasn't too sure myself. I left a question for jmom about it so will wait to see what she says before filling in any more.

message 139: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sarahlou29) | 1302 comments Kirila that is fine. I'll place you in the retired one. That's for a book with someone over the age of 60 for 5 points on the second sheet.

message 140: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sarahlou29) | 1302 comments Oh I just went to see if my question was answered. If all the original 5 points and 3 points tasks are filled in we can reset. So we can just move onto the next sheet. I'll leave the spaces open for the second time read on the first sheet, as I'm not sure we'll make it to a third reset. It's all about points to if we can't get onto a third we can still do extras. No matter that the points are lower =] I'll be back later, waiting for I think 3 more people to check in.

Annette Olsen | 205 comments I think I have picked the three books that I have been assigned so far so I wanted to submit them for approval.

Main character has a child under two - The Millstone
The Millstone by Margaret Drabble

Book has a big party - Princess of the Midnight Ball
Princess of the Midnight Ball (Princess, #1) by Jessica Day George

Main character takes up a new job - The Necromancer
The Necromancer (Johannes Cabal, #1) by Jonathan L. Howard

If there is a problem let me know and I will keep searching!

message 142: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments I made some adjustments to the tasks - clarifying noticeable impact qualifications.

All tasks should have a noticeable impact on the book! I don't want there to be a brief mention of attending a wedding or party, a trip to the zoo, driving to someplace. That would be way too easy! I can't keep a meanie reputation that way.

Marnie (marnie19) | 3313 comments I would think after...I'm sure a couple people ( most likely me) will change their minds about which books they are going to read.

We are looking very organized team!!!

But I can make a tentative list so we can scope out what everyone's reading...which is half the fun :) I will put it in message one and link the books as people select their books

message 147: by Elsbeth (last edited May 25, 2014 01:50PM) (new)

Elsbeth (elsbethgm) | 1152 comments I've found 3 books I could read:
-read a book with some type of reunion of family members – Remember the Moon Remember the Moon (when this is allowed - I've posted the question on the ruling-discussion)
-read a book where the main character is under 13 – The Dry The Dry
- read a book that takes place in a residence (house, apartment, hotel, inn, cabin, etc) – The Gentleman The Gentleman (I think it will take place in a land-house, but will be sure after I've read it...)

I hope I will be able to read so much, because, due to the time-frame I can't read saturday (noon EST is 18.00 my time and the last saturday I have to work until 17:00...).

message 148: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sarahlou29) | 1302 comments Marnie I was thinking make a list of the books people are willing to read for their chosen tasks. But of course if people don't know what they're reading yet that's fine. Even I'm not sure yet so no worries there. But I think a day or two before the topper begins to have a list all done.

Annetter I'm not sure on those books, I'd say yes for both the party and the child under 2, a possible yes for the new job. But I think it's best if you check with Jmom =]

Your welcome Lilisa.
