PattyMacDotComma | 1256 comments I enjoyed Viet Thanh Nguyen's 2016 Pulitzer Prize winner, The Sympathizer, but the political and philosophical arguments got the better of me in his follow-up, The Committed. He's an excellent, smart writer - and funny (a Chinese guy called Le Cao Boi wishes he were American).

PamG (lynguy1) | 2510 comments Enola Holmes and the Elegant Escapade Enola Holmes and the Elegant Escapade (Enola Holmes #8) by Nancy Springer by Nancy Springer is the 8th book in the Enola Holmes series. This series brings together Sherlock Holmes and his much younger sister Enola in a teen / young adult historical mystery set in and around London in late 1889. The author blends suspense, a bold protagonist, and humor in this latest case for Enola.

PamG (lynguy1) | 2510 comments At two weeks prior to publication, I can now post my review of Nonna Maria and the Case of the Missing Bride Nonna Maria and the Case of the Missing Bride by Lorenzo Carcaterra by Lorenzo Carcaterra. While others say she is a sleuth, she says she doesn’t solve crimes, but helps friends and family when they’re in trouble.

It is historical fiction, set in WWII Britain. A group of women start a sewing group to mend a wedding dress, which grows into a group lending wedding dresses to prospective brides.

PamG (lynguy1) | 2510 comments I finished Who Can Hold the Sea: The U.S. Navy in the Cold War 1945-1960 by James D. Hornfischer. Overall, this is a very readable, enlightening, and educational history of the U.S. Navy during the early days of the Cold War.

Jeff Bailey | 4 comments Clancy Quill and the Onitor Amulet I just finished L A Hearn’s novel, Clancy Quill and the Onitor Amulet. What a delightful read. A young boy must be initiated into the family – ah, business? tradition? As a fantasy, you know that there is more to it than that. I would say that Clancy Quill and the Onitor Amulet is a mashup of Harry Potter and Encanto, but with some very interesting story twists that I’ve not seen before. I thought that the target reading audience might be the pre-teen/tween age group fantasy fans. Clancy Quill and the Onitor Amulet presents some excellent imagination builders. I’m 75 and I enjoyed it. Kudos to LA Hearn for a charming book. It promises to be quite a series. Jeff Bailey, author of the conspiracy thriller Not On My Watch.

Thomas (tom471) | 1339 comments I read Blind Justice by David Mark It is set in Hull, Yorkshire, England. David Mark writes dark and gritty mysteries, but this one was a little too dark for me. Jeff Bailey | 4 comments The Third Choice The Third Choice by Kira Tynan was unique in so many ways, a thoroughly delightful read. It was an unusual blend of family dynamics and Sci-Fi without the Sci-Fi dominating the plotline. The protagonist, Chris, is by all accounts a normal young man, living a life and caring for his ‘special-needs’ parents. But those ‘special-needs’ are … well … a bit unique. Thus enter the Sci-Fi backstory. One might say that the parents are out of this word. I liked Kira’s presentation and writing style. They were not heavy handed or intrusive. The story just flowed well and kept the social dynamic of one living with his parents and trying and trying to meet a nice girl in the forefront. Gives new meaning to ‘meet the parents.’ I could easily see The Third Choice as a Sci-Fi selection on the Oprah Book List. It was that well done. I’ve already ordered my next Kira Tynan novel. For me, five stars for both Kira Tynan and for The Third Choice. Jeff Bailey, author of the conspiracy thriller Not On MY Watch.

Jeff Bailey | 4 comments 22 Dutch Road I was intrigued by 22 Dutch Road when I read it. Elements of the story line were surprising to me and that is not an easy reaction I asked Tim about the characters Stan and Peebles and here's what he said, 'The general idea of an estranged son returning to his father's estate and encountering mysterious statues was something which stayed on course, more or less, through the end of the writing. I didn't realize, however, how important some of the supporting characters, like Stan the neighbor and his dog, Peebles, would be, since I "discovered" them while writing. It turns out that these two are often my readers' favorite characters, more so than the protagonist, Billy.'

As an author, I understand how sometimes a character can seem to take over and drive the story line. When you read 22 Dutch Road, pay special tribute Wilson and Peebles And... that's The Back Story.
