Caly ☯ Crazy Book Lady | 596 comments That said, I think my banked book, "Miracle on Wolf Hollow Lane" would work for the nurse square. It is about a dog who saves a little girl's life not once but twice. Also I would love to claim the Historical fiction square it's my favorite genre and I have lots of books to choose from. Thanks!

Oooh, that sounds cool. I've never really read any historical fiction. I've gotten a lot of recommendations for Outlander, and it's in my 'maybe eventually read' queue, but it's such a long book and it's so intimidating!

Maybe if I ever take a week off of work to take a vacation by myself! I might be able to pull that off if I picked short books. But not this week with work and guests coming to my house. :P

prag ♻ (janayanation) I can't stop thinking about this now!? 25 is a huge stretch for me (I barely get through 3 books a week lol) but I'm going to go for at least 8 books in a week after my exams are over.

Caly ☯ Crazy Book Lady | 596 comments I was just confused by all the posts about which books for which square. I do also have a book that is second in the series that I plan to read also.

message 3508: by prag ♻ (new)

prag ♻ (janayanation) Generally curious, guys- do you plan on how much you're gonna read beforehand, or do you sort of go along the flow and read whatever you want whenever you want? Tbh the GR Reading Challenge haunts me when I have a dry run (book wise :P). I remember, last year at the end of December I set my 2016 goal to 183 so I would read a book every 3 days, but sometimes I read nothing for days and days but if it's a series I've really gotten into, I can finish upto 4 books in a day.

Ehh, sorry if I'm rambling on.

This is the first year I've done a very substantial reading challenge at all. Prior to this, I tended to read maybe a book or two a month, but I eventually started ditching TV/Youtube/Reddit/Netflix in favor of books, and discovered the joy of audiobooks during mundane tasks. I planned to read 52 originally, but... well, I've obviously gotten a bit ahead of myself. Now I'm nearing twice that!

So I guess I plan to read at least a certain lowish, definitely achievable amount, and then increase the goal by at least 1 per week remaining in the year if I surpass the original goal.

message 3510: by Brianna (new)

Brianna Andreda | 422 comments Sometimes I plan what I'm going to read, but most of the time I never end up reading everything I plan. Majority of the time I read what I want unless I see something that looks good that I don't own. Then I go searching for that book. Then I read something until it arrives if I had to purchase it online.

message 3511: by Brianna (new)

Brianna Andreda | 422 comments See I find it hard to set my reading challenge goal because for some reason I barely read during the spring. I may read less than 10 books those months combined. Yet between July and December I somehow miraculously made my goal last year. Last year my goal was 100 books and I ended up reading 103. This year it's set for 150. I'm my typical 20 books behind like always around this time of the year. I think the challenge motivates me. I like to finish things so it makes me feel accomplished if I finish my goal

Brianna Andreda | 422 comments I'm currently reading Paper and Fire
Possible squares:
Published in 2016
2nd in series
Death/grim reaper - people have died
Skull & crossbones - people have died or there is a girl who got bit by a poisonous snake
Syringe - they gave the girl medicine through a syringe after she was bit by the snake
Nurse - there is the medica who came to give the girl the shot and assess everyone's injuries

I'm also reading Every Heart a Doorway
Possible squares:
Published in 2016
Maybe the clown- the book deals with kids who went through magical doors and then come back to reality. Or there are worlds they call Nonsense where things don't make sense. I think a clown would live there cause somehow they get their big selves out of little cars, have big feet, and have a big red nose which is just ridiculous.

Oh and i almost threw my tablet when i saw that clown. I'm terrified of those things. They're freaky

Brianna Andreda | 422 comments Oh I'm also reading The Pelican Brief which was made into a movie and has crime as main page genre.

Ella | 367 comments Oh my current book Bride by Mistake can go with the the grim reaper since the hero's first child dies before it is born . so far that's all i can see.

Can we use the clown since the book is about the arrival of their child and the clown is a kid?

Caly ☯ Crazy Book Lady | 596 comments Pragya wrote: "Generally curious, guys- do you plan on how much you're gonna read beforehand, or do you sort of go along the flow and read whatever you want whenever you want? Tbh the GR Reading Challenge haunts ..."

I have always loved to read but had gotten away from it the last few years and I realized how much I missed it so when I found GR it gave me a new motivation. Generally I read on my lunch hour and maybe before bed and I can do about a book a week so I set my goal for 52. I wanted something doable but not overwhelming. However since joining the Red Pandas and loving having a 'reason' to read and the fun of helping the team, I am striving for 2 books a week so I will easily reach this year's goal. 8-)

Caly ☯ Crazy Book Lady | 596 comments Okay,
finally got home from work and could look through my books without fighting with my phone LOL and have found one I am going to start.
What Could Possibly Go Wrong? (The Chronicles of St Mary's, #6) by Jodi Taylor
What COULD Possibly Go Wrong? by Jodi Taylor

This works for the square with "Title Contains Could" and I figure that is a harder one to get so I will claim that first. Besides it has 476 pages so it means more points. Still plan on reading a Historical Fiction book (I have about 12 in my to read pile LOL) so if that square is open when I get to it, that will be fine.

Wheee! I love having a task! I am off to read...8-)

Ray (user2637) (hugpete) | 1521 comments Ugh, I was typing a post and checking Terror Birds, Basilisk, and our spreadsheets and my browser crashed. Now my post is gone. Boo. :/

Anyway, it's hard to tell what people are claiming v. just mentioning, so I checked off all the mentioned squares in my personal tracking spreadsheet, which left me with 5 no one mentioned. Much easier to look for somewhere to put Redshirts in 5 instead of 25!

Claiming Poseidon, square O4 for Redshirts from the bank, because he's god of the sea and there're a few very imporant scenes that happen in the ocean/beach at Santa Monica.

Claiming hare, square g1, because "traditionally, rabbits are associated with fertility, sentiment, desire, and procreation" according to this and in the book I'm reading she talks a lot about having her kids (procreation), and her family/hubby in general (sentiment, desire).

I didn't see Dark Places (from bank) mentioned or assigned to a square and would like to suggest b5 "9" square since no one has mentioned the 9 square and Debby Day was 9 years old when murdered.

Also want to mention that Kelly from Terror Birds read HP & Cursed Child.

That's 4/5 squares no one had mentioned, Wo0t! :D The other one is Title Contains Man, so I might go looking for that... after I do these chores on my to-do list. siiiiigh. Dishes! Why are there always dishes!?

Thanks Ray! I am glad someone can understand the confusion LOL. Basically I am reading a book now for I4 ( title contains Could) and would like to do one for B3 ( Historical Fiction)

Oh and my banked Miracle book would work for Nurse but that was just a suggestion.

I thought though that "Dark Places" was used for the Suspense square on the last board and was eaten by the shark? But you are right it does not say it was used on our spreadsheet.

Lory | 629 comments So I tried to keep track of what everyone was claiming/reading. But I am currently reading The Name of the Wind. It has 662 (or so) pages and I am nearly there!

This should work for the beakers - he is at university during a portion of the book and learning alchemy and chemistry

It could also work for the syringe - again at university he is studying medicine (he is a busy guy).

It has won a bunch of literary awards, but I think that one has been filled by margaret.

Let me know once some of this has been sorted and I can see if it fits anywhere else.

I have a couple books lined up after this as well!

I split the difference - I usually have a list of books with upcoming publication dates that I should read sooner rather than later, but the order isn't set. So I'll look at those books, see what strikes my fancy, and go with it. There are times that I just break out and borrow a book for fun, because sometimes I needs me some romance/mystery/whatever, you know? :)

banked HP and Cursed Child for the Terror Birds slot (read by Kelly)
