Ray (user2637) (hugpete) | 1521 comments Hmm, I popped over to the Markhor spreadsheet to see their first place "best looking" chariot and it looks like one of the team, Jo-Jo, didn't read a book for it, only for the decoration. :/ Checked the Omni-sack prize sheet & they didn't use prize O2 (one person can read for another person's goal). What am I missing here? *braindead after weekend with nephew*

I also noticed for the Markhors that 1 person read 2 books for a single round in Distance. Thought that was contrary to the rules too....? They got all the points for the round though. Weird and vaguely unsettling.

Caly ☯ Crazy Book Lady | 596 comments Congratulations fellow Pandas! Way to go on most improved!

I apologize for not checking in sooner but had some personal issues come up this weekend that kept me away from reading 8-( but I am off work tomorrow and hope to have my current book finished by then.
Seems like we are now getting a lot of "O"s so maybe you want me to find a "G"? I just want to make sure I am doing something to contribute since I can't read as fast as most of the team :/.

And so are we not planning to re-spin at all? What about books already read that won't work for DRAGON?

Have a good day all!

GO PANDAS!!

Current word: DRAGON
Possible books for each letter (remembering that some overlap):

D - 16
R - 14
A - 19
G - 10
O - 6
N - 9

Current color bonus: pink in text
Possible books: 18

Most needed: books with O in the spell out
Could also use: books with G and/or N in the spell out

Kazen Oh my gosh guys, today work was crazy. Not bad crazy, just lots longer than anticipated. "Yeah, we'll be done in under an hour!" Three hours later... ;)

So haven't looked at this thread all day. :( I'm going to dig in now but my brain is kind of mushy, so forgive me if I miss something or don't catch up completely. I'll look it over with fresh eyes in the morning.

The good news is that a mushy brained Kazen sometimes writes weird, funny things! Let's see how this goes....

Nice work! I'm not sure if the chapter named pink would work, either, so I'm glad it's in a sentence, too. :)

Nope! Just add books you read to your shelves and let us know about it. The chance that we'll be able to fit them in somewhere is very high. Once you finish your class and things get back to normal you can return to being your goal-orientated reading self. :)

You're doing great, no worries! A G or an N would be much appreciated :)

"And so are we not planning to re-spin at all? What about books already read that won't work for DRAGON?"

Literally every book we've read so far, including those banked from earlier, has counted for dragon. Literally. So as the rules stand staying with dragon is the most pointsy... but I realize it may not be the most exciting.

Thing is, though - you never know when the mods are going to throw a monkey wrench in to make things more interesting. Bwahahaha. ;)

So I'm not saying we'll never re-spin for a new word... but that it may not be the best idea right now. I hope that makes sense, my brain is still mush, hehe.

I'll start an O book, but was wondering if we were going to respin? There is that bonus 100 points if we get the word that relates to wobble, if I'm understanding correctly.

What!? Lol, I really need to read the rules again. But I think we should respin in a while and hope for something that relates to wobble if there is a chance of 100 extra points. The way I see it, we don't have much to lose, do we? We have some of most letters, so we could probably do as well as we're doing right now with another word.

But whatever the rest of you and the captains say is good, I'll be happy to read whatever fits:)

message 2126: by prag ♻ (new)

prag ♻ (janayanation) Ehh, I think I changed my mind. This is from the rules:

The benefit for spinning a new word is:

a) You really don't like the word you were given and/or
b) You want to try and respin to get the word that is the team name in your group and get that 100 point bonus

Even if we somehow get Red Panda, it's a long word and harder than dragon.

I really liked the world he made, but I haven't read any of his other books. I keep confusing him with David Levithan for some reason which makes no sense. Actually, I have a feeling Westerfeld has written a book called Leviathan and my brain is off making all sorts of random connections.

If you go to the main Wobble Spread sheet on the first page, all the way over to the right there is a column that says "Grouping" . We are grouped under LAND with 3 other teams.

Hope that helps!

If you go to your own page ("Caly") on the spreadsheet, there's a "Book Used" column and To Dance With the White Dog isn't marked yes there, so looks like it's not used yet. It is on the Wheel Reserve sheet though, with all the letters, so it's probably in the planning stages of being used. Hope this helps! :)

message 2144: by Margaret (new)

Margaret | 456 comments Good morning Red Pandas (or good evening depending on where you are in the world and when you read this).

Just to clear up the 100 point bonus option:

To get the 100 bonus points, we need to spin TAPIR, complete the word and the colour bonuses. And, we only get the 100 points the first time we complete the word (if we redo the word we only get points for the spell-out, color bonus etc).

But, if we re-spin for a new word, and get TAPIR again, then we can get the 100 bonus points again :)

message 2145: by Ray (user2637) (last edited Jul 25, 2016 02:55PM) (new)

Ray (user2637) (hugpete) | 1521 comments Just reposting some maths re: word length chances on the wheel. And, yup, tapirs is our 100 pt word. :)

• 3 in 10 chance (30%) of spinning a shorter word (5 letters)
• ~2 in 3 chance (65%) of spinning a 5 or 6 letter word
• 1 in 20 chance (5%) of spinning "tapirs"

However, even though a words is shorter, doesn't mean it's relatively easier to spell. I did a bit more in-depth review of each 5 and 6 letter word, click through to see it! (view spoiler)

So, the chances of getting a 5-6 letter word that is easier than "dragon" are only 1 in 3. As much as the gambler in me wants to try for "tapirs", it is definitely safer to stick with "dragon".

I'll go with whatever we choose, of course! It's just fun for me to do the math on these things. :D :D

ETA: Guess it took me 45+ minutes to do all this math, hahaha. I see Margaret has clarified the "tapirs" bonus already. :)
