Nice work with the book! It's nice to have so many letters to work with.

I'm going to do a to-spin-or-not-to-spin analysis once I get the sheet straightened out, so hang tight. :)

You're doing okay, no worries! I put your latest book into the spreadsheet. :)

The last couple events that we did were mad rushes - Wheelathon is more of a long haul. So every book has a great shot at being used. :) Fear not!

If you look at the Wobble-wide spreadsheet you can see that we're split into groups by kind of animal - Endangered, Air, Sea, etc. We're Land, so we'd have to spin the word Tapirs (another Land team) in order to get the 100 point bonus.

Current word: DRAGON
Possible books for each letter (remembering that some overlap):

D - 10
R - 9
A - 11
G - 6
O - 7
N - 5

Current color bonus: pink in text
Possible books: 9 (out of 12)

Most needed: tbd once up to date
Could also use: tbd once up to date

I like reading more than one book, especially one is heavy or academic. I tell myself that as long as each book serves a different "purpose" it's okay. So... a difficult read for thinking, an easy read for right before bed, a fun read for my commute, something in Japanese so I can study... and so on and so on, hehe.

Kazen Each spin of the wheel gets us 90 points - so that's 360 points right there! Huzzah!

eta: And those 360 points moved us up eight spots, from 21st to 13th! Woah!

message 2163: by Kazen (new)

Kazen

Okay, time for spin strategy!

Spinning gets us a new word, which is nice. :) But it also carries some risks.

Pros:
- Chance at 100 point bonus by spinning TAPIR
- New words are fun

Cons:
- Chance at spinning a long/hard word
- More books are needed for the color bonus

The way the color bonus works is that for each time you spin for a new word the number of books with a color task attached goes up. Right now we have one - pink in the text. When we spin we'll get two new color tasks to complete instead of the one we have now. And each time we spin for a new word after that, the number goes up by one.

At the end/beginning of each week the number of books needed for the color bonus goes down by one. The tasks are pulled from this list (from the rules):

Colours:
red, orange, pink, green, purple, blue, brown, black, white, grey, gold, silver

Colour tasks:
-cover colours
-items on cover with colour
-text on cover with colour
-colour in title
-colour found in text

Apparently the silver and gold tasks are the hardest - they need to actually be silver and gold, not gray or yellow. And cover stuff seems to be harder than text stuff.

So! I was thinking we could take advantage of color task going down by one at the end of the week. We could spin on Thursday-ish, getting a new word with two color tasks. If we like it we can use it many times, like we're doing with 'dragon'. If it's a pain we can do it once or twice, then re-spin early in the week. That new word would only have one color task, with it being a new week and all.

What do you guys think? Pros, cons, 'like it's and 'don't like it's... love to hear it all! :)

Ray (user2637) (hugpete) | 1521 comments I vote we stay with dragon forever. We have SO many pinks (the book I'm reading currently even has a pink) and all the other color tasks seem harder than finding a word in the text.

On what day and at what time does the new week start? Saturday at 11 am UTC?

Kazen wrote: "If it's a pain we can do it once or twice, then re-spin early in the week. That new word would only have one color task, with it being a new week and all."

I think I'm understanding the rules differently than you are...? They say: "◈ If the team finishes their word, and the two bonus' [sic], and elects to get a new word, the number of colour tasks required for bonus points will increase by one with each new word."

To me, it looks like this: If we respin on Thurs, we get a word + 2 color tasks. On Saturday at 11am UTC (assuming I'm correct about the timing of the 'week'), we lose one of those color tasks, going down to that same word + 1 color task. The next respin will up the color tasks back to 2.

Not sure if that's right, but that's how it reads to me. :/

Ella wrote: "if 'O's arent very common then 'I's even more so. "

In the data I have, "I" is the first letter of 3.7% of English words and "O" is the first letter of 3.3% -- so "I" is a bit more common, at least in the set of all English words. :)

message 2168: by Kazen (last edited Jul 26, 2016 01:57AM) (new)

Kazen Ray (user2637) wrote: "I think I'm understanding the rules differently than you are...?."

More than rules, it has to do with how the spreadsheet works.

When you respin for a new word you get the color tasks, and they never disappear from that word. Once it's set it's set. To get the reduction you need to spin for another new word.

So every respin before the weekly reset the color tasks go up by one. For the first spin after the weekly reset, it goes down by one. And for each spin after that it goes up again.

Clear as mud? ;)

This was my first question when I saw how the rules are worded, great minds think alike!

Yup you are actually right. I even checked out my tbr list and I have more I-books than O-books. but I still think we should stick to the plan Kazen mentioned... that way if we get a horrible word we wont have to do it for long. that said.. I'm okay with watever we do- plenty of books to choose from :P

Tammie | 4553 comments I'll just throw one more out there...the color changes. If the color requirement is in the text, it may be a bit of a problem for those of us who have 'returned our books' to the library. If it's a color on the cover, wouldn't be a big deal.

I'm fine with the spinning on Thursday...we have lots of other letters banked...I don't think there is a letter that's not covered...however, we don't have a lot of banked books left...so there is some risk. I think getting our arms around this move sooner than later in the challenge will be a good one...especially if the number of color requirements really does reset with the 'new week'.

I'm currently reading a longer book, but clearly we all should consider throwing a few shorts in there to get our book count back up.

Nearly all books have their text searchable on Amazon, so finding new colors in a text shouldn't be an issue. I used that to search for pink in previously banked books and only came across one or two I couldn't check. :)

message 2178: by Bety (new)

Bety (betyplusbooks) | 211 comments I have a question--

I picked up A Midsummer Night's Dream from the library, and considered reading it for the challenge because *technically* it qualifies, having somewhere around 160 pages in the edition I borrowed. However, there's a ton of blank pages and white space, and I'm not sure I feel good about thinking of it as a 100+ page book because of that, since it would probably be about 80 pages if it were condensed as much as a normal book.

Thoughts? Are we okay with it being technically 100 or more pages, or should we take the moral high road here?

message 2179: by Bety (new)

Bety (betyplusbooks) | 211 comments I have no particular issue with spinning and getting a hard word. We have almost all the letters banked up, so with most challenges, we should be able to complete it instantly if we really hate it and move on... And I think some of us (me in particular) like occasionally being tasked with specific requirements, so if it IS a hard color, I really don't mind going and reading a specific book to accomplish that.

Seriously, I have no problem with either going on Amazon to search through texts for an in-text word while browsing titles at the library (if someone can tell me how to do the text-search thingy), or going and asking my friendly neighborhood used bookstore owner "This is a weird request, but do you have any shortish books with a mostly-gold cover?" In fact, I welcome the challenge!

All you need to do is look up the book on Amazon and click on it. On top of most covers there will be an option to "Look Inside". Click that, and a preview will open. On the left side, maybe midway down, is a search box - put whatever you like in there and every occurrence will show up. :)

The requirement does go down, no matter what. But once a word is spun the bonuses are set and do not change. But the requirement goes down, so the next time we spin for a word, no matter when that may be, the color bonus books will go down by one.

Maybe this example will help:

During week one a gets their first word (one color book). They roll for a second word (two color books) and a third (three color books) in the same week. They like this book so much they decide to stay with it for a long time.

When week two rolls around the color requirement will go from three to two books. The team doesn't see it, though, because their current book does not change. It was set in stone when it was rolled.

When week three rolls around the requirement again goes down, from two books to one. During week three the team decides to roll for a new word, and it will have one color book attached.

So even though the team didn't roll for a new word during week two ("no matter what the team decides to do") the color requirement still went down at the beginning of week three.

That's the best I have right now... let me know if something is still unclear and I'll ask the mods for a better explanation.
