Oooo, options! Gotta love options :)
haha yea. and best part abt this challenge is that you can pick any book u want because the word can be done again... and again... and again :) :D
I'm midway through Interview With the Vampire by Anne Rice which says "waxen stems of white and pink blooms" on p. 114.
What is the likelihood that we already have the word spelled out from unused books? Maybe it's just me who has a lot of unused books since I joined late, but I'm pretty sure I have D-R-A-G-O if I understand the rules correctly.
Oh, we're looking good with our reserve books. If you go to the spreadsheet and look at "Wheel Reserve" you can see that we have lots of options, and we're not even done filling in all the characters and stuff yet! I'll pick that up again tomorrow morning :)
This is going to be posted again before Wheel start but I just want to say - when you guys turn in complete books be sure to write down all the characters you can, not just ones that fill these letters. We'll be changing words over time and options are power. :) Any character with a "speaking part" (more than a passing mention, preferably with lines) is fair game. Also, if you see the word pink make a note - we'll need the phrase it's in for the spreadsheet. A better explanation is coming tomorrow - nearly midnight so time for sleep here. Night!
It seems like this challenge is... not very challenging. The possible places for letter use make it really flexible!
I think the challenge will be finishing books quickly so we can move on. Continuing to bank books if we can will be good too.It seems like we may be short on the 'o' in dragon so far...I haven't checked the banked books yet.
Kazen wrote: "Tammie - yea books! I just want to make sure - these are possible future books and not banked ones, yes?Double Dare is good for those three letters, which gives us nice leeway. And who knows, as ..."
I haven't read them yet...future!
I look at the reserves list tonight and note other characters...and possible signs of pink for you as well. Using all characters will help. This challenge is clearly a quantity challenge. I think your idea of continuing to reserve books when it's not our turn is a great strategy,

Really sweet book that made me smile.
I have a question:Let's say we decide to re-spin the wheel. And based on the new word, we find that it has an uncommon letter that one of the books we used for "Dragon" happens to have. Can we re-arrange the books at our leisure?
I was wondering, because I got bored at work and realized that I could write an algorithm in excel to either:
a) If we can rearrange books at our discretion, automatically process the books at the end of the challenge to determine the arrangement resulting in the greatest number of points, or
b) If we can't rearrange books, determine before each wheel re-spin what books we should use based on presence of rare letters and total number of letters.
Because I'm a computer geek.
Well that completes all my promised booked for the Olympic event.Guess we are on to Wheel now. And I am totally confused by the details LOL but I guess only our Captains need to figure that out. 8-)
Seems to me that most any book I read will be able to be used somewhere which is nice but almost a little disappointing. It is more fun to have to find a particular book to fill a needed spot, makes it more of a challenge. Will try to pick some of my shorter ones so I get a few more done each week.
Off to take a break and do some food shopping then look for my next book.
Happy reading and so very cool how far we moved up in the ranks!! Congrats All!

Happy to be of service Bethany. As I told the team in the beginning, I don't have the ability to read a lot of books in a week, but I always fulfill by promises. 8-)

LOVE this feature of iBooks. :)
Looks like we're low on Os for dragOn. Hmm. I shall poke around. Reminder: I'm heading out of town today & will likely be too busy playing with my 3.5 yo nephew to check in much this weekend. Also not taking my laptop so iPod only, eep! It's almost like losing an arm haha.

DID YOU LIKE IT?"
I really really did! 4 stars, probably more like 4.5(we need half stars dang it!). Though there were the really sad bits, I loved the way info re: the virus and happenings was slowly released throughout the book and how the zombies weren't the main focus. Hoping the last couple rounds of wobble have spots where reading longer books is needed so I can get on to the sequels. :D

This is awesome!!!! For the other rounds in wobble, once something was 'locked in' to the spreadsheet, it wasn't changeable so I'm guessing it's not going to be this time either but Kazen will know for sure.
You weren't here for Page Relay in Olympics but I sort of took over arranging the books because of my excel skills (which seem to pale on comparison with yours!) and Kazen & co-caps & everyone were totally awesome about it -- they were all 'well, you're good at that and inspired to do it, so have at' which is a thing I ADORE about this team!!! It's not all quashing eagerness or totalitarian rule. And I love us all for that!!!
In short, I'm positive your algorithm will we welcomed for planning, and utilized. But of course, maybe it won't be followed 100%. Still. Fantastic tool to have at our disposal IMO!
Much love to all my Pandas. :)

Ray (user2637) wrote: "Kazen wrote: "This is going to be posted again before Wheel start but I just want to say - when you guys turn in complete books be sure to write down all the characters you can, not just ones that ..."Well since we seem short on "O"s and main character names will count why don't I start out reading
.
Not sure if this is a worthwhile statistic, but I counted up some various stats for words on our wheel:Total letters:
6 words with 5 letters
7 words with 6 letters
3 words with 7 letters
1 word with 11 letters
2 words with 12 letters
1 word with 13 letters
I think, strategically, we want short words as much as possible, since bonus points are awarded for finishing words. That means more bonus points per book read for a 5 letter word than a 13 letter word. If/when we spin the wheel, there's a 55% chance that we'll get a word with equal or fewer letters, making spinning the wheel somewhat risky.
Distribution of letters, sorted greatest to least:
R: 14 occurrences
O: 13 occurrences
E,N: 11 occurrences each
S: 10 occurrences
A,D: 9 occurrences each
B,I,T: 8 occurrences each
G,H,M: 5 occurrences each
L,U: 4 occurrences each
C,P,W: 3 occurrences each
F,K,Y: 2 occurrences each
Q,V: 1 occurrence each
J,X,Z: No occurrences
So we can essentially ignore j,x,z on the spreadsheet, but hunt down things with R,O,E, and N!

It's a quick read, but there are quite a few books in the series, so I am not sure if that is what you are looking for. I haven't read them all, but I do like the magic involved and everything.

Bethany wrote: "It seems like this challenge is... not very challenging. When we re-spin we may get a super long word, or a super hard color task, so it's best to stay on our toes. :)
Tammie wrote: "I think the challenge will be finishing books quickly so we can move on. Continuing to bank books if we can will be good too..."Yup, books give us options. :)

Bethany wrote: "Let's say we decide to re-spin the wheel. And based on the new word, we find that it has an uncommon letter that one of the books we used for "Dragon" happens to have. Can we re-arrange the books at our leisure?"Once a book is entered into the spreadsheet its position is locked, so unfortunately no. When possible we keep books with lots of options or uncommon letters, like you mention in b). For example, I recently finished a book by Iman Verjee and plan to keep it around for as long as possible because Is and Vs can be hard to come by.
So as lovely as an algorithm sounds (and awesome!), there's no rearranging to help it along. :/
Caly wrote: "Guess we are on to Wheel now. And I am totally confused by the details LOL but I guess only our Captains need to figure that out. ..."We're on it. :) And the rules make more sense the third time you read them, I swear! It took me a few times but it does sink in. ;)

Every time we re-spin the wheel the number of color tasks will increase, so while things are easy now there's very likely some crazy challenges coming down the line, fear not! Hehe.

And just for the record - how we get the letters doesn't really matter. The mods could decide to throw us a curveball, of course, but up until know I've never seen "main character letters only" or anything like that in a spell out. But we'll take every letter any way we can get it! Hehe.
No reason to wait to start - read at your heart's content. :)
Bethany wrote: "Not sure if this is a worthwhile statistic, but I counted up some various stats for words on our wheel:"Ooo, statistics are awesome, thank you!
A wheel spin is kind of risky, but we may want to spin now and then - staying with one word would mean that there's a group of books that we could never use. And I don't know if I can stare at "dragon" for four weeks! Hehe.
"Distribution of letters, sorted greatest to least:"
Oh wow, this is super helpful - thank you!
In past experience vowels can be harder to get, as fewer words start with them. It's really interesting that O is above E (I remember RSTLNE from another "wheel"!) so it will be good to keep an eye out for it.
"So we can essentially ignore j,x,z on the spreadsheet..."
Three super hard letters we can avoid, huzzah! :) I'm going to keep these columns on the spreadsheet just in case though - four weeks is a long time. The mods may get tricky and change up wheels or who knows what else. ~shifty eyes~ An ounce of preparation is better than a pound of cure, and all that!
...that's a little off but you know what I mean, hehe.
This analysis is super helpful, thank you!

And that's Olympics finished! The captains now have 12 hours to finalize the spreadsheets, and we'll be able to start entering our Wheel words after that.
No restriction on reading, though, so have at! :D
Ella wrote: "So now can I start my wheelathon book? Well not now-now ( its 3.30am) I mean in the morning. :) -> as in when i wake up heheh"Yup! This challenge doesn't have a hard start date/time like Olympics does. Have fun!

"Caly, great job with this one! I had a closer look at the cover and while I think the arm is totally fine I'm worried that because the fingers aren't clearly defined it may not pass muster with the higher ups. Luckily Brianna happened to finish a book that has an arm so if it's okay with you I'll swap that one in for the Distance throw.
The good news is that now we can use your book for Wheel, yea! Sorry that we're not using the book where it was originally intended but you never know, this may end up being more pointsy! ;)
