Thanks Rose!

And yes I am sure I will have an internet connection most of the time anyway. Along with my phone I have an Amazon Fire Kindle that goes everywhere with me; I can always post from there. I also have Kindle Unlimited so it is loaded with books LOL if I manage to finish those other 2. I do want to spend some time with my wife! Hehe.

Awesome :)

Don't be silly, you know loved ones are only there to stare at you as you frantically chew through books to appease friendly people from the internet ;)

Honestly, take all the time off reading you need to have a great trip. Event 1 is the most time dependent, and you sailed right through that.

Have fun!

prag ♻ (janayanation) I finished The Scorpio Races just now! (I started as soon as Kazen said we were good to go, I was really excited for it, haha) So can I use it for page jumping, or did I have to read my event 5 book first?

PS: Annabeth, sorry about reading it before:( Tell me what you think about it when you finish it!

this goes toward wheel , I think, since I strted it before heat 1 was over.

now I'm off to read my cowboy book :)

Oh and on a completely different note- I have a lot of books with full arms, i.e bare shoulder to fingers. Ive seen atleast 3 books while just scrolling down my list in search of my event 5 book.

Ha. We are trying to give event 5 priority, but all events are open to work on at this point.

So I'll put that one down for page jumping, and you can read your wheel book now.

Did you run Golden Son through the color extractor? It looks good, but checking since that's the way the Mods are judging that spot.

We have that slot open, free and clear, since everyone has a book already. So I can switch you, or can put you down for both, and you can let us know a bit later if Maybe Someday won't be in in time.
You just have to let us know in advance if you aren't going to get to it (like a week before the end?), so we can replace that position.

I'll start reading Golden Son asap and hopefully it will be done by the time the book comes. And if someone else is like "oh hey this is 12 characters" and takes that spot, I'll probably be able to put someday maybe in the page jumping challenge.

I think any book one reads during Sprints can be counted almost anywhere else (once finished, of course).

From rules:
▲ Books used for sprinting MAY be completed and used in a task elsewhere within Olympic Games, (though not for cheering).

Ray (user2637) (hugpete) | 1521 comments GO TEAM!! YAY!! Event 1 Heat 1 had no chance against us!

My partner gave me some melatonin last night, as a bargain to get him to eat some because he was really sleep deprived and loopy yet refusing to sleep. It usually does nothing for me but I fell asleep 30 mins later and woke up in a blurry stupor at 8am. Event 5 was open so I sleepily read 100 pages of my book and then fell back asleep until 3pm!! Boo melatonin. Bad melatonin. Hahaa. Good thing I had nowhere to be today.

Our lovely Star Beast is cooler than I previously thought: He talks! :D

Ray (user2637) (hugpete) | 1521 comments Just for giggles, I timed myself reading for an hour and I read what seems to be a low number of pages... :/ The internet says people read 20% faster on paper vs. ebook so maybe that's the discrepancy. Or maybe it's all these weird sci-fi words in my book. ;)

Caly ☯ Crazy Book Lady | 596 comments I probably will need to opt out of the Sprint event mostly because I don't usually have the ability to read for long time periods. However I definitely want to help out with the Distance Event and found 2 books that will work and I am happy to read one or both for this event.
A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman has his whole arm showing and you can see his fingers so I assume this would work.

The other book is Bronze by Kerri-Anne Weston which is one of the metals that we need to have.

I just thought if down the line I work on this event, then I can help free up people to read for Sprints. Just a thought.

That Bronze book is wonderful! I think the metals will be the hardest parts to get so it's nice to know we have this on hand.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to say no to the arm book, though - the mods are being very picky and asking for at least three fingers and with the angle it's hard to see. :/ I'm sure you can find another spot for it, though. :)

message 1173: by Kazen (last edited Jul 07, 2016 01:50AM) (new)

Kazen

Things are moving right along so let's start thinking about the next event, Fight Club!

There are two parts to Fight Club - Sprints and Coaching. To put it simply:

Sprints - read for the allotted time, PMing times and pages to the mod as outlined in the rules. You'll be paired with another fighter/sprinter behind the scenes - whomever reads the most pages wins.

Coaching - after a sprint is complete coaches may read a MMA/martial art/boxing book to cheer their fighter/sprinter on.

It sounds simple but there are a lot of rules and caveats (no audiobooks for sprinters, sprinters limited to one or two books, specific requirements for fighting books, etc.) so before signing up be sure to read the rules and know what you're getting into.

If you're interested let us know what you'd like to sign up for. Keep in mind that the sprint slots must be completed in order so if you're going for one hour you'll be first (and soon-ish), and those going for longer sprints will be last (and later-ish).

And of course, if you have any questions let us know!

eta update to the update: Wow, the sprint is proving popular! The slots have filled but fear not! The captains have a plan in the works that would allow everyone to try their hand at sprints - details forthcoming. :D

Kazen ~ahem~

I would like to take the six hour sprinting slot - my schedule is fairly thin the next couple of weeks, so I'll be able to do it even if we get time crunched and have to finish on a weekday. :)

And while Margaret isn't here because of work, she asked if she could snag the four hour sprinting slot. :)

Rose | 633 comments While I'm at it, does anyone mind if I reserve one of the 500 page + distance shots in event 4 ? I really want to start the sequel to Promise of Blood (Powder Mage, #1) by Brian McClellan , and it's so huge it would be great for a long sprint.

message 1180: by Ray (user2637) (new)

Ray (user2637) (hugpete) | 1521 comments I can take the 1 and/or 2 hour sprint slots... because I did those both today as sort of an experiment. Just finished 2 hours of reading a paper book and I did read more pages per hour than in the 1 hour of ebook I read earlier today. Interesting!

Anyway, they are both books for other events (Star Beast and My Boyfriend Wrote a Book About Me which I hope I can get penciled in for an arm in Distance), so no worries if others want the 1 and/or 2 hour slots. :)

message 1181: by Rose (new)

Rose | 633 comments Fun fact. I read too much partly because I am a raging insomniac, and have to stop looking at bright screens two hours before bedtime, which means two hours of reading a night. It's surprisingly effective.

How about the 1 hour slot? That way you can start whenever you like, sooner rather than later. Just be sure to follow the reporting requirements in the rules! ;)

message 1183: by Lory (new)

Lory | 629 comments I just finished my Event 5 book Size 12 Is Not Fat 368 pages.

I am slightly confused about what's next. I know we want to do page jumping books. My book that I would like next is 531 pagesA Study in Silks which looks to be a little long. It does look like it will work for the arm though, if that is still needed.

Also, I thought about readingThe Time Machine which is 118 pages. This should work for the page jumping yes?

And...Left Hand Magic which is 293 pages.

Should I just start on all of these? I am traveling for work at the moment and so I have a lot of down time. I may also be able to do one of the sprints (I have a few paperback books with me as I'm not sure how the page numbers works with ebooks), but I am a little slow on the reading side and would only be able to do a 1 hour or two hour sprint.

I also kind of would like to read a bookThe Iron King which would work for the "iron" for Book it to the distance. 363 pages

I know, a little overzealous of a post, but just keeping everyone updated :)

I will probably start with Left Hand Magic, but would like the Study in Silks second if that works.

Ray (user2637) (hugpete) | 1521 comments Kazen wrote: "How about the 1 hour slot? That way you can start whenever you like, sooner rather than later. Just be sure to follow the reporting requirements in the rules! ;) "

Sure. But not sure you understood -- I already read for 1 hr and then 2 hrs today and kept track of everything. So if we want, we can check off 1 & 2 hrs right now, all I have to do is send the PM to the Mod acct. But I don't want to take up all the spots if others want them!

So, let me know. If I'm only taking the 1 hour slot, I will use page numbers from my 2 hour read, since it was more pages. I took note of pages at the 1 hour mark because my timer only goes to 1 hour. :)

message 1185: by Kazen (new)

Kazen Lory - way to blast through your Event 5 book, yea! And huzzah having a lot of downtime for reading! I love it when that happens. :)

Left Hand Magic and The Time Machine would both work for page jumping, yup. :) I'll put you down for the Left Hand Magic slot in the spreadsheet. Just double check that the edition you shelve has the same number of pages.

So far we've been avoiding having people claim more than a book or two ahead - I have many of us have book eyes bigger than our book stomachs so we'd like to avoid people getting overcommitted and feeling stressed. This is a game, after all!

A Study in Silks looks awesome, and the arm looks good to me, so even if it doesn't get in the 500+ page task of distance we can use it for an arm if we're short. We could also hold on to it in reserve and put it towards a bonus round of Distance, though my brain hasn't quite gotten that far yet! @_@

The Iron King also looks great for Distance - I may just put you down for that (along with Caly's Bronze book) once I get that planning spreadsheet up and running. It's a good book, too - I gave it four stars. :)

The one hour sprint looks like it's been taken so the two is open if you'd like it, but no stress if you'd rather pass. Your call!

So it sounds like all your books will fit somewhere. :) Let me know if I missed something - today seems to be my day for it, hehe. Read on!

Aha, I see! I'm sorry that didn't get through my brain the first time around.

~shakes head to clear the cobwebs~

Let's have you stick to one slot for now, just to make sure as many people as possible get a chance to grab one. If we have a leftover at the end we can draw straws for it. ;)

Your two hour read was on paper, yes? I'm asking because those page numbers are definitely fine as is. Why don't you go ahead and use the first hour of your two hour read then, messaging that info to the Mod account as outlined in the rules. Tell us when you finish so we can tap the two hour person (whoever it ends up being) and let them know they can start anytime. :)

Thanks for being so on top of things, you rock! ~internet high five~

message 1188: by Lory (new)

Lory | 629 comments Thanks Kazen. I'm not stressed, just like to have a plan, it helps me from waffling about which book next to read (which is why I'm reading so many more than usual). If everything works. that's all I wanted to know.

Lol, 3rd book in the series is Magic and Loss, sadly the feet don't get to do magic.

I'll take the 2 hour spot, if no fat reader wants it. That will be the exact length of my flight on Friday. so no distractions!

Not a problem about the Arm book, like you said I am sure it will work for another event. I will just leave it in the pile till we need it.

Happy that the Bronze book works. I had a feeling the metals would be harder which is why I went looking. Like Lory I am a planner and now that I understand how the all works, its helpful for me to have myself on a schedule.
