I'm working my way through this series and love it! Lily is such a great mix of strength and vulnerability.

Lauren (laurenjberman) Finished book #3 - The Girl On Legare Street (Tradd Street, #2) by Karen White - a really good ghost story with a very nasty spirit. It took me a while to warm up to the main character, but the more I read, the more i like her.

Aimée Bruneau's narration is fabulous - very immersive and you get a real sense of the atmosphere when she describes everything.

Danielle | 6 comments Just finished #49, The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman . I listened to the new full cast Audible version, and the cast was perfectly chosen, wonderful listen. Really enjoyed it; Neil Gaiman is a great choice to get into the Halloween spirit.

Lauren wrote: "I'm working my way through this series and love it! Lily is such a great mix of strength and vulnerability. ..."

The only part I didn't like was how people treated Lily when they found out what happened to her. I found there was no empathy and it was all her fault which was kind of strange. Maybe that was normal for the time in small town USA? *shrugs*
I do intend to continue the series, I can get it on audio through my library which is handy :)

Great choice for audio there Danielle. Gaiman is really good as a narrator, and if you want another full cast of his, American Gods is very very good. (Anansi Boys is also fabulous on audio - Lenny Henry does a wonderful job)

Lauren (laurenjberman) Karen wrote: "The only part I didn't like was how people treated Lily when they found out what happened to her. I found there was no empathy and it was all her fault which was kind of strange."

Their reactions made me empathize with her even more. I hate to say it, but their behavior is more common than not. Many people have no idea how to act around someone who has suffered a tragedy and they just want the person to "get over it" and "move on" so that they can feel more comfortable.

Blaming the victim is also something that is, unfortunately, all too common.

I agree that people don't know how to react and want to encourage someone to "move on", but I found more than one person demonised her for what happened. Anyhow, I still quite enjoyed the book and admired her courage.
Charlaine Harris writes such interesting characters and places, I've become such a fan!

message 264: by Kristie (new)

Kristie | 3595 comments Just finished my 24th audio for this challenge The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls . I thought it was a very well written memoir. It never felt dry or slow. Even with the subject matter, it wasn't trying to be politically correct or oh poor me. She didn't try to make things funny when they weren't. It came across as being very real and heartfelt. The author narrates the book and the narration was a bit inconsistent, but I felt that hearing it in her own voice helped to portray her emotions.

Currently listening to Moon Called (Mercy Thompson, #1) by Patricia Briggs . So far, it is very good. But, it doesn't fit into my challenge anywhere!! I have very few books planned that will fit in soon. Hopefully, I will find time to get to the books that I have planned specifically for this challenge. I still have a couple slots that haven't been pre-planned for this challenge ( I need a 30-35 hr and a 35-40 hr book!), so those should be fun to come up with it. :)

message 265: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (laurenjberman) Finished book #4 - Rosemary and Rue (October Daye #1) by Seanan McGuire - a good urban fantasy story. The world building does have a tendency to overshadow the mystery and the villain's identity is quite predictable. Nevertheless, I liked the heroine and the other secondary characters so I will be continuing with the series.

Mary Robinette Kowell's narration is pretty good. I did listen at x1.25 speed but her accents are great (especially the Irish fae) and the heroine is spot on.

Sins of the Demon (Kara Gillian, #4) by Diana Rowland - Some excellent developments in this installment. Liv Andersen's narration is still slow but x1.25 speed solves that problem nicely.

Twice Tempted (Night Prince, #2) by Jeaniene Frost - I love Vlad and Leila's dynamic in these books and Tavia Gilbert is so good at portraying the tension and excitement of their relationship.

◈ Celebrity Narrator
Category name says it all: Somebody famous narrates. Examples: James Marsters reading Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files series or Anne Hathaway reading The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. BTW, when searching, audible.com is calling this their “A-List Collection.”

◈ In-Sync Multimedia
Use an audible sync option to read-along! Such as the new read-along with your Kindle option by audible.com called Whispersync, which remembers your last stopping point in either device. However, you may read a book using any two media choices your desire, as long as one of them is via audio.

We've mostly been updating our original list and some of us add a comment to say which book we just finished and what we thought of it. It helps when you're trying to decide which audio book to read to see what others thought of the narration. Also, one of the challenge topics is to listen to a book that someone else recommends, so you can probably get some recommendations on this thread. No need to repost your whole list each time though. I hope you have fun with your first challenge!!

Rio76 | 27 comments Joining in this challenge to whittle down some of my audiobook TBR pile. I have an audible subscription and I find they're great to listen to while crafting (so the multitask category would probably apply to all of mine!)

I will aim for Audio Technician: 11-15 books.
Duration: 26 Nov 2014 to 25 Nov 2015.

Some of the books I want to include are as follows (I want to use a different category for each):

Moon Over Soho - Ben Aaronovitch, read by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith (male narrator) (30Nov2014)
Whispers Under Ground - Ben Aaronovitch, read by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith (10 Hours to 14.9 Hours) (26Mar2015)
The Help - Kathryn Stockett, read by Jenna Lamia, Bahni Turpin, Octavia Spencer and Cassandra Campbell (recommended to me)
True Grit - Charles Portis, read by Donna Tartt (female narrator)
Captain Vorpatril's Alliance - Lois McMaster Bujold, read by Grover Gardner (Audie winner)
Making Money - Terry Pratchett, read by Stephen Briggs (favourite narrator) (22Mar2015)
Fool Moon - Jim Butcher, read by James Marsters (celebrity narrator)
Coraline - Neil Gaiman, read by Dawn French (Between 3 - 5 Hours)
Northern Lights - Phillip Pullman, read by the author and full cast (full cast)
Sharpe's Tiger - Bernard Cornwell, read by Rupert Farley (new to me narrator)
Naked in Death - J.D. Robb, read by Susan Ericksen (re-read a favourite) (12Dec2014)
A Study in Scarlet - Arthur Conan Doyle, read by Derek Jacobi (classic)
