The Kindle edition to be merged has an ISBN number, which is indeed listed at the publisher site http://henerypress.com/a-muddied-murder/ as a Kindle ISBN. Leads to edition to be merged with when ISBN is searched on Amazon. Can they be merged, or should they be kept separate?

Hi! An author friend has asked me to tidy up the editions for his book. There are 3 editions, a Kindle edition, a paperback edition and a spurious third one. I have combined them and tidied up errors but I can't delete the spurious one (there are reviews on it).

That is a caching issue. It can take up to a few days for some pages to fully update. You can see they are still there when you choose the filter option "text-only".
