Sandra | 25914 comments SHELF ANNOUNCEMENTS

All the comments have been either earlier shelf call or it doesn't matter cause you'll be asleep etc.

So shelf calls will now be 1 hour earlier, starting this week.

If in doubt, they will be 7.30am Thursday Sydney time.
Converter is here

message 154: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments Oh, tomorrow I might actually be awake at the time of the shelf call because Thursday is a bank holiday here :-)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments Aaaand here is my Sci-Fi Romance completion post. I wanted to alternate this with the alien book but it didn't want to give me the option of divided attention ;-)
Also, sorry Vilda, but I posted the wrong cover earlier. I was persuaded I had the pink one so it was quite a surprise when I pulled the book off my shelf and this one looked back at me. :-)

Completion Post
Sci-Fi Romance
Book: Slave to Sensation by Nalini Singh
Slave to Sensation (Psy-Changeling, #1) by Nalini Singh
How it fits: page 3 of the list (shelved as "sci-fi-romance" 16 times)
Date Read: May 3rd 2016

Review:
Interesting set-up for the world, especially the Psy.
Great characters and it was good to see the Psy clinging to what she has known for all her life rather than giving in the first time she's pushed. It made Sascha far more believable than some of the other characters out there. I really liked the idea of the dream sequences.
The changeling community is nothing new as far as shifters are concerned but the characters were enjoyable and there are quite a few of them I would like to encounter in future books.

Eldarwen | 2202 comments Yeah that stuff somehow always ends up taking far more time than you'd think it would hehe.

message 159: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments You know, I really am kind of glad this isn't a winning shelf. I'm enjoying Bingo too much to want it to be over hehe.

message 160: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments I may be reading Blood Cross (Jane Yellowrock, #2) by Faith Hunter for this but I'm not sure yet. I'll go to bed now and will go through the shelves again tomorrow once I'm up (bank holiday, hooray!) and see what I'll go with.

message 161: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25914 comments Due to all the kids books on the Hunter shelf we have also approved using the Hunters shelf.

So with my Ninja powers I decree that you can use either shelf:

Review

I'd been putting off reading this one because I haven't quite warmed up to Vlad as a leading man. I love him in the Night Huntress series, but to this point, his leading role here has not made me love him as much. Thankfully, this book seemed to be a turning point for him without making it seem like he was an entirely different character. He was still the same old Vlad, but there were moments where Night Huntress Vlad seemed to peek through and reminded me why I liked him so much.

As for Leila, she definitely deserves the "strong heroine" title for all the crap she goes through in this one. Man! How she manages to survive one particular scene with her sanity intact, I'm not sure, but it made me really admire her strength.

All in all, this book was really enjoyable. It was fast-paced and had some great moments. I'm looking forward to reading the next one!

message 163: by Steph Ann (new)

Steph Ann | 1220 comments This shelf is a hard one for me! I think I'm gonna go with either The Maze Runner (Maze Runner, #1) by James Dashner or Love is Darkness (Valerie Dearborn, #1) by Caroline Hanson .

Also, I should have my sci-fi romance book done later tonight. :)

message 164: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments Yeah this shelf really was a bit of an odd one. I'll have a look through the other option Sandra posted to see if something else pops up there that catches my eye. I still have a few pages of shelf to go through on the initial link.

Also, Armi, Guild Hunter might be a good idea. That is the one I have to read next as well so might go with that one. I know I can usually read them fairly quickly.

message 165: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments Woo! Steph Ann, go go go :-)
Strong Heroine is now done as well, nice! Depending on how lazy I'll be today - I was planning on some cleaning and washing etc - I'll be done with Obsession tomorrow at the latest. My Aliens book. Then we can finally request that stamp, too.

message 166: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments Ok, depending on how quickly I'll be done with Obsession and how things pan out for the rest of this week, I'll be reading one of these:

Blood Cross (Jane Yellowrock, #2) by Faith Hunter Embrace the Night (Cassandra Palmer, #3) by Karen Chance Archangel's Storm (Guild Hunter, #5) by Nalini Singh Written in Red (The Others, #1) by Anne Bishop

The last book is from the second link Sandra posted.

This was seeing the whole Luxen-Arum conflict from the other side and while it doesn't really change my opinion of the Luxen (even Damon was a prime example of an arrogant Luxen asshole, even if he was fiiine), it does change my opinion on the Arum, mostly because you actually get to know a little more about them.

I do have to admit though that Hunter pulls off the arrogant attitude much, much better than Damon ever did (it honestly tempts me to downgrade the whole Luxen series a little haha).

Serena and Hunter had interesting chemistry and I liked the development of that relationship. There wasn't a lot of plot to the book - actually the plot was just a bit of background noise at the beginning and towards the end - but I didn't even mind that.

message 168: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments Haha, finally done! Let's get that stamp! :-D

message 169: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments Barrons becomes more and more interesting as the series progresses. Personally, I like the whole enigmatic aura around him. Mac.. well, yeah, she's sometimes a huge pain but she improves over the series and steps further and further away from her mary-sue-ishness.

Hopefully, the series will pick up for you! :-)

message 170: by Eldarwen (last edited May 07, 2016 02:47AM) (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments If it's any consolation, I've had my issues with Cat time and again as well, but I kept reading the series mostly for the other characters, the story etc, and she sort of grew on me. I love Vlad though :-)

I think she does get better after a while though her self-righteous trait never really completely goes away, but the series gets better.

Oh and one thing that really pissed me off in the Night Huntress books? Bones' constant use of the word "mate"...

message 171: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments Yeah I'm not really sure how she thought that particular trait would make him sound more British. But yes, Bones is British.

message 172: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25914 comments He was british but spent 200 odd yrs in Australia with Spade, (this is also where he met Ian I think) where we still say mate. LOL. Though not as much as we used to.

message 173: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments Oh good, that makes more sense then, because I never heard a Brit use that word as much as Bones did.
Thanks for explaining that, Sandra :-)

message 174: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25914 comments All that comes out later in the series and Spade has his own book First Drop of Crimson (Night Huntress World, #1) by Jeaniene Frost

message 175: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments You know, I can't actually remember that they spent that much time in Australia. Despite having read Spade's book as well. *shakes head* Must have fallen out of my brain somewhere along the way ;-)

message 176: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25914 comments Well it didn't go into too much detail, its all off-stage as it were. But actually being here in Aus, you tend to remember stuff like that. It was how Bones & Spade got their names, being convicts.

message 177: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments That part I do remember as I found the stories as to why they went there quite interesting. Just the fact that they actually stayed there for such a long time has slipped my mind.
Haha yes, you tend to remember things in books that happen in your own country. :-)

message 178: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25914 comments Well, I don't remember exactly how long they stayed, but it was a considerable time.

Innocent in Death (In Death, #24) by J.D. Robb

Read: 5/4/16
Rating: 4 stars

Review

This book was just as enjoyable as the other books in the series, despite the fact that I wanted to slap Roarke upside the head a couple times. I hate it when my favorite male leads make me want to do that lol, but it showcases how deeply attached I feel to the characters, which is a testament to JD Robb's writing. Eve had to let go of her control a bit and make herself vulnerable in this one, and watching her struggle with that made me the reader emotional as well. As for the other characters, there are some good Peabody and Sommerset scenes, and Mavis makes an appearance as well.

As for the murder investigation, it kept me on my toes. I did eventually figure it out before Eve, but it was literally only a few pages before she figured it out, so it didn't affect my enjoyment of the book at all.

I'm definitely looking forward to the next one!

Steph Ann | 1220 comments Armi wrote: "I so want to continue the In Death series - I've only read a few of the first ones and every time someone mentions them I think I should pick up the next one - but there are so many of them the she..."

It's such a good series! The number of books is definitely intimidating. The nice thing is, the books can stand on their own relatively easily, so you can pick up a book whenever you're in the mood and not have to really worry about feeling lost because you've forgotten what happened in the previous one.

message 182: by Steph Ann (new)

Steph Ann | 1220 comments I ended up going with End of Days (Penryn and the End of Days, #3) by Susan Ee as my Hunter book. I'm pretty sure I can have it done by Wednesday!

message 183: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments Wooohoo!!
Doing awesome, ladies! :-D
I'll be done with my Hunter book tomorrow and then hopefully Wednesday's call is going to bring us something good :-)

I kind of don't want Bingo to be over yet but since so many teams are starting to get close to a win, it's probably inevitable hehe.

(view spoiler)

In short, there were moments were I laughed out loud, moments where I teared up and moments where I just wanted to grab some of the characters and hug them. The characters were unique and decently developed for a first book in a series.
And you know the best bit? No insta-love. It felt like a breath of fresh air!

message 188: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments I put the larger part of the review under a spoiler tag as it actually contains a couple of spoilers, though they may not be too bad for anyone who hasn't read the book.

Review

This has really been such a great series. I'm sad to see it end, but this last book was a great finale! The only thing that kept it from being 5 stars for me is that it had a bit of a slow start. Once it picked up though, I never wanted to put the book down! Penryn definitely has her hands full in this finale, and I was on the edge of my seat to find out if she and her family would survive this big final battle. I think people who enjoyed the first two books will definitely be pleased with this one!

message 197: by Steph Ann (new)

Steph Ann | 1220 comments For Favorite Series, I'm going with Mortal Ties (World of the Lupi, #9) by Eileen Wilks .

message 198: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments Vilda, good choice! The novellas are quite good.

Steph Ann, I really need to start reading that series. I've heard good things about it so far. Are you enjoying it?

message 199: by Eldarwen (new)
