@Vilda, I loved both A Court of Thorns and Roses (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #1) by Sarah J. Maas and Cinder (The Lunar Chronicles, #1) by Marissa Meyer !

My Soul to Take (Soul Screamers, #1) by Rachel Vincent

Review

Yet another book I've had on my TBR list for awhile, and I'm very glad I finally picked it up! I'm not always a big fan of YA because I can't always handle the teenage angst without getting annoyed. Thankfully, while the characters definitely act their age, they still seem very mature (for the most part) and aren't annoying at all.

You don't see a lot of books about banshees, so this was a refreshing read, as it covered ground not often covered in other series. Combine that with reapers and various other creatures in the Netherworld, and Rachel Vincent has created a very intriguing world that I'm looking forward to exploring more. I'll definitely be checking out book 2!

Eldarwen | 2202 comments A Court of Thorns and Roses (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #1) by Sarah J. Maas is a great book! :-) I really like Maas' writing.

Sounds like a good book, Steph Ann! Banshees are definitely a rare sight. I don't think I've encountered very many so far, other than as nasty side characters who want to kill the main characters.

Eldarwen | 2202 comments Options I found:

Burn for Me (Hidden Legacy, #1) by Ilona Andrews The Bone Season (The Bone Season, #1) by Samantha Shannon Written in Red (The Others, #1) by Anne Bishop Twice Tempted (Night Prince, #2) by Jeaniene Frost Slave to Sensation (Psy-Changeling, #1) by Nalini Singh Hunting Ground (Alpha & Omega, #2) by Patricia Briggs Magic Shifts (Kate Daniels, #8) by Ilona Andrews

message 106: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments Eurgh!!! I HATE when publishers do that! Why would they let an edition go out of print? And why oh why do they always have to change the editions of the books IN THE MIDDLE of the series?!

Maybe you can go secondhand bookshop hunting and you'll find a nice copy in good condition?
I know the problem of not having matching books all too well. The All Souls trilogy is the bane of my shelf.... 3 books, 3 different editions....

message 107: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments Oooh, Armi, I'm not sure whereabouts in the world you're located but it seems that amazon.co.uk has one copy left of THAT edition.

message 108: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments I go to US for free kindle books and use co.uk and .de to order my paperbacks :-)

Welcome!

Eldarwen | 2202 comments I'll be reading Magic Shifts (Kate Daniels, #8) by Ilona Andrews for the Strong Heroine shelf. It has finally been decided ;-)

message 112: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments Suuuch a good series! I love the characters and the story and the world building and ... and.. the usual hehe.

I'll keep the review spoiler-free, no worries, Armi! :-) Otherwise I'll put the tags. But yesssss, 7 ended very interestingly! I can't wait to continue, but I'm not really in a reading mood today, so far at least. I wanted to read during my lunch break and managed a whooping 1 1/2 pages ;-)

Sandra | 25914 comments Shelf Announcement News

Shelf announcements will be one hour earlier for at least the next 2 weeks, starting this week.

If I can get out of Jury Duty in May, they will continue at the new time. If Judith has to do the announcements during May they will probably go back an hour.

We'll let you know of any changes, as we find out.

message 115: by Steph Ann (new)

Steph Ann | 1220 comments Just popping in to let everyone know I'm still here lol. It has not been a good week for reading to say the least. I did finally start my strong heroine book last night though so yay!

Steph Ann | 1220 comments For Urban Fantasy, I'm going with The Drafter (The Peri Reed Chronicles, #1) by Kim Harrison .

Find a book you want to read Armi, then see if its on the shelf ~ much easier :D

message 118: by Eldarwen (last edited Apr 22, 2016 11:12AM) (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments Haha yup, I am facing a similar problem, Armi ;-) Lots of read books on that shelf.
But I'm sure we'll find something! I already spotted a couple that may be interesting, namely:

Turn Coat (The Dresden Files, #11) by Jim Butcher Burn for Me (Hidden Legacy, #1) by Ilona Andrews A Kiss of Shadows (Merry Gentry, #1) by Laurell K. Hamilton Blood Cross (Jane Yellowrock, #2) by Faith Hunter Lover Eternal (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #2) by J.R. Ward Twice Tempted (Night Prince, #2) by Jeaniene Frost Reap the Wind (Cassandra Palmer, #7) by Karen Chance Masks (Cassandra Palmer, #4.3; Cassandra Palmer world, #9.5) by Karen Chance

Eldarwen | 2202 comments Mmmhh! Four! :-)

I'll be done with my Strong Heroine book this weekend latest but then I'm doing a challenge where I won't be able to squeeze my alien book in BUT the week after that, i.e. first week in May, I promise I'll read that alien book so we can finally get the stamp for that shelf!

Sandra | 25914 comments Yay Armi, that's another fav series of mine!!! And yes Smitty gets his book later on.

message 122: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments Oh yes, I do have a book hehe. I've been meaning to read Obsession by Jennifer L. Armentrout .
The other option would be Sweep in Peace (Innkeeper Chronicles #2) by Ilona Andrews . In the meantime it's just a matter of fitting in either of those two hehe.

Review:
Loved it, as per usual. The banter, the characters, the story, how it all always seems to come together so nicely seemingly without a lot of effort. And I can't help it, I still love Roland. I'm sure he is very twisted and there is some nasty stuff being plotted out in that formidable brain of his, but I love him anyway.

There was a particular scene with a drawing of an apple that had me in fits (while riding the bus, I might add).

I cannot wait to see how this series will continue and what Kate, Curran & Co will get up to in the next book(s).

message 124: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments No doubt about it! Then again, I didn't expect to be disappointed :-)

message 125: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments For Urban Fantasy, I'm going to read Masks (Cassandra Palmer, #4.3; Cassandra Palmer world, #9.5) by Karen Chance :-) I remembered that I hadn't actually read it yet. Started it last year or so but for whatever reason I never continued and then there were challenges were it didn't fit, I think. Weird though. I usually don't put off a Karen Chance once I've started it.

Anyway, starting this today! :-)

message 126: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments I've been meaning to read that one and might pick it up soon. I was eyeing it last weekend but then decided against it hehe.
I'll be curious to see what you think of it!

message 127: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments Hehe it was the length for me too. But still, it looked like the kind of book that could be read quite quickly.

message 128: by Steph Ann (new)

Steph Ann | 1220 comments I switched my urban fantasy book to Sun God Seeks…Surrogate? (Accidentally Yours, #3) by Mimi Jean Pamfiloff since I need to review it. I've also started reading that one before finishing my strong heroine book since urban fantasy will give us 4 in a row. :)

I'm hoping to finish my urban fantasy book tonight, but at the latest, I'll be done with it tomorrow.

message 129: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments *squeee* So glad you liked it, Vilda!! :-)

message 130: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments I should have my Urban Fantasy book finished by tomorrow evening at the latest, or so I hope hehe.
And then on Sunday I'm going to pick up my Aliens book.

I'm very curious though what today's shelf call will bring!

message 131: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments Ooooh you'll love that series! :-D It's the one I started with and it's even better than ACoTaR.

Celaena is a very special kind of main character. After Throne of Glass, read The Assassin's Blade - the short story collection. It'll give you more of an insight on who she is. But it's best read after the first book even if all the story take place before Throne of Glass.
I LOVED the 4th book and cannot wait for #5 to be released later this year!

Sandra | 25914 comments SHELF ANNOUNCEMENTS

As many of you may remember I was facing Jury Duty for May. I've been excused on the grounds of pathetic public transport & the 2.3km (I think about 1.5 miles) walk to my nearest bus stop. Yay!

So, I will continue to post the shelf announcements and Judithe is off the hook.

Saying that, do you want them to be at this time or 1 hour earlier, in whichever time zone you are? Please comment either way in the discussion thread.

Review

I kept moving this book towards the bottom of my review pile because the title and cover made me think it wasn't going to be anything special. I was very surprised to discover that I was wrong. This book was full of humor and characters that just leapt off the page. My only complaint would be that Penelope fell in love with Kinich a little too quickly to be completely believable. Other than that, I honestly can find nothing bad to say! I'll definitely be checking out the rest of this series!

A more detailed review will be posted over at Dark Faerie Tales. I'll post a link to the review once it's online!

Eldarwen | 2202 comments For Sci-Fi Romance, I'm going with Slave to Sensation (Psy-Changeling, #1) by Nalini Singh or Naked in Death (In Death, #1) by J.D. Robb .

message 138: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments Ah that is not so helpful.
If you want something light and not too demanding, then Obsidian (Lux, #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout might be an idea? There's lots of talk of it being a Twilight rip-off except with aliens instead of vampires, but honestly, then half the YA books that take place in highschool would be rip-offs one of the other.
The female MC can be a tad annoying but the male MC is quite alright.

Also The 5th Wave (The 5th Wave, #1) by Rick Yancey was quite good. Dystopian YA that I found really interesting.

Forgotten Sins (Sin Brothers, #1) by Rebecca Zanetti wasn't a bad read either, military man who lost his memory and went back to what he previously knew, causing chaos.

And you know... there's always Clean Sweep (Innkeeper Chronicles, #1) by Ilona Andrews :-) Anything Ilona Andrews is good. This one is a little more particular as it was published piece by piece on their internet site or blog and then thrown together to be published. So the writing isn't as polished as it usually is, but still, it's an intriguing story with an interesting set-up. Don't do the audio though o.O I listened for a minute or so, horrible!

message 139: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments Armi wrote: "I've tried the audio for Clean Sweep too. I don't know why they thought someone who sounds like a sixty-year-old would be a good voice for a twentysomething."

Lol yes, a terrible choice.

I really do enjoy it! It's my go to series for when I want a fast, fun read. The audio for the series is really good as well. I kind of hear the narrator's version of the characters in my head now when I read the books lol.

A young Mircea - now that was very different from how I've gotten to know him in the other books. I didn't expect him to be that hilarious in his younger days hehe.

The story itself was a bit confusing at times what with all the back and forth but it was an enjoyable read and I would happily read a few more stories like this one set in between the end of this particular book and the beginning of the Cassie series. There is a looot more to tell after all.

Also there are a handful of characters I wouldn't mind getting to know better to hear more about their stories and what has become of them in later years.

message 142: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25914 comments Masks was originally written as a freebie but her publishers wouldn't let her give it to us, her loyal fans. So, not sure she'll do anymore like it after all the legal hassles she had. Though she might just write them as normal books.

message 143: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments I know... her publishers are pissing me off on a regular basis. Same with the fact that Reap the Wind was apparently too fat to be published, so she had to shorten it/split it into two. Sure, we now get two books, but argh!

message 144: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25914 comments That's why we allow any book, even non fiction, if its on the shelf, you're allowed to read it, provided its at least 200 pgs long.

Otherwise its not really fun, to read a book & then find out it you can't use it.

Eldarwen | 2202 comments Armi wrote: "Yeah, this way is more fun. :) Even if the silly shelvings make me huff and puff."
