Hiya, Team Caps! Thanks for volunteering to guide your team through a round of BookShelf Bingo! Your job, should you choose to accept it, will require a few things:
1 ~ Be our go-to person should we have any questions about your team
2 ~ Organize your teammate's weekly reads for each shelf/category so that the BSB Ninjas can quickly and easily verify and approve your stamp request(s)
3 ~ Encourage and motivate your team (you may also ask to borrow Judithe's whip whenever necessary)
4 ~ Post regularly to ensure your team is communicating and on track each week (Send them a PM and friendly poke if they haven't posted at least once a week, noted their book choice, and/or appear to have dropped out of webspace)
5 ~ Send us a PM (Steph, Sandra or Judithe) should you need us for any reason throughout the game
Hi, team! *waves*A bit about me, I'm 33 years old. I'm a stay at home mom to two boys, although I'm currently looking for work. My oldest child is 18 months old and the youngest is 3 months old today. Needless to say, things have been quite interesting/hectic around here lately lol. Since my youngest was born, I've been having a hard time getting back into the swing of reading as much as I used to, so I was very excited to see sign ups for BSB pop up because I know that's just the kickstart I need!
I would prefer not to be captain, as I don't have a whole lot of time to be online, but I could do it if no one else volunteers. I'll try to think up some team name possibilities.
Also, just fyi, I'm mainly online at night once the kids are in bed. I'll check in if I can during the day via the app. If I have my phone out during the day though, my 18 month old tends to grab it out of my hand. So if there's ever a post from me that makes no sense whatsoever, it's likely he's responsible. :)
Looking forward to getting started!
Oooh audio suggestions! Always good, thanks for those! :-) I have the same problem, Vilda. I often can't connect to narrators either because the voice or the accent are getting on my nerves.Anyway! ;-)
Hello everyone!
I'm Eldarwen and this is my first BSB. I enjoy playing bookish bingo and this sounded like a fun one (I got lured here by Natalie and then saw a string of familiar faces signing up haha).
I'm fine with you being captain, Vilda! :-)
Congrats everyone on the recent baby and marriage! :-D
I'm seconding Bookworms in Bloom as well! I like the sound of that name. Nice options in general, Armi!
I was browsing through the shelves when they were made available and... there is only one way to really say this: *squeeeee* so many good books! It's scary to see that for some of those lists the first page has been almost completely read by me haha, but there are so many more gems waiting to be discovered :-)
Also, a series I really enjoy on audio (and I'm not usually an audio listener) is Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden series. It's read by Spike himself, aka James Marsters. Really good! Got me into audio in the first place.
I also read Hounded half in paperback, half on audio (ok that sounds weird...) but that audio is brilliant!
I've partially read the first book as well and I think his voice suits the main character very well, especially with the humour and the sarcasm. He does the various voices quite good in general.
I like Bookworms in Bloom as well! Congrats on the recent marriage, Vilda! I think we were on the same team last round also. Looking forward to this one!
I've been meaning to try the Dresden series on audio. I love Spike aka James Marsters and have heard he does a great job. The only audiobooks I listen to regularly are the In Death books. The narrator for those is really good!
Cool, sounds like we have a name! :-)In Death is a series I haven't gotten around to starting yet. I've been meaning to read the first book for a while now but other books always seem to want to be read first. I think I have the audios available as well, so I might give that a go.
I'm really hoping for a shelf call tomorrow for which I can use
as I'm going to pick that up from the post office tomorrow!! :-DDDI have the whole series in paperback and this one took ages to come out in paperback, and then I was on a book buying ban (I do that from time to time... *grin*) so now is finally the moment I can continue :-D
One audio I was really disappointed in - and I only listened to it for a few minutes - was for
. I imagine that the same narrators have been used for the whole series but I only listened in on the 4th one. What really bugged me was this: some chapters were from the male point of view, some from the female point of view. There was a female and a male narrator. But instead of having the woman speak the female voices even in the male POV chapters (and the other way around), the man imitated the female voices. Now he wasn't all that bad at it. But the woman... when she imitated Daemon's voice... terrible. This forced low voice that absolutely didn't work and sounded like her vocal cords were going through a cheese grater.
Such a shame! Especially since there were two narrators.. they could've done it differently.
You can always read it for the Free Space book Eldarwen, then it doesn't matter which shelf is called first. It's on the group bookshelf :)
True Sandra, I could do that, too. But I've been eyeing
for the free space as I can then continue with the rest of that series for other shelves ;-)(I read the first one a few weeks ago and now I've ordered all the rest hehe.)
I'm trying desperately to plan, though honestly, I wonder why.... *grin* It'll be of no use anyway.
Btw, for the Assassins shelf... if any of you haven't read Brent Weeks' Night Angel trilogy (starting with The Way of Shadows), read it!! It's absolutely brilliant!
I mean *cough* with books 6-8 (and 5.5!) still ahead of you, you'll have some awesome books coming! The storyline really picks up -again - in 6 and 7, loved it!
You won't! Like a couple of other series, this just keeps getting better and better!Mercy Thompson is another one of those where I feel that the books get better the more the series progresses.
The number of books in the In Death series is very intimidating! I'm still in the 20s. I find it's an easy series to come back to after a long break, so I've been taking my time with it.Love both Kate Daniels and Mercy Thompson! I've been meaning to do a reread of both series but haven't had the time.
@Eldarwen, I've heard great things about
. I'll keep it in mind when/if the Assassins shelf gets called!
Today is just not going as planned lol. Woke up to find a whole bunch of ants in our living room, which is of course where we spend the majority of our time since that's where the baby swing is located, so my 3 month old can hang out in there while I play with my toddler. A lot of my toddler's toys were just covered in ants. So gross! Luckily, my mom is off this week, so she's watching the kids while I wait for the exterminator. I'll be glad when this is taken care of. I feel like things are crawling on me. *shudders*
On the bright side, my mom watching the kids means I can get caught up on this week's Walking Dead lol.
Ewwwww, yesss, that's the worst about it. Once you see too many of those crawly things in one spot, you feel like they're all over you even if they're nowhere near you.Sucks though that the living room is filled with them :-/ Any idea how they got in all of a sudden? Hopefully it'll be taken care of soon! :-)
We've had ant problems the past 2 years, but we've always been able to keep them controlled on our own, without having to resort to an exterminator. We sprayed a month ago when the weather first started warming up, but apparently, this year's ants are resilient lol. With a toddler running around dropping crumbs everywhere, I just don't want to deal with the stress of trying to manage it on our own this year.
Yeah, true. Toddlers don't really facilitate that kind of thing. At least this way you'll hopefully be rid of them once and for all - or you know, for a longer period of time. Since those things have a tendency to come crawling back..Sentinel wars is a series I never started either. Is it one you'd recommend?
I've come to really like the Sentinels series. It's one of those where the first book wasn't super strong (in my opinion), but something made me go ahead and check out book 2, and I'm very glad I did. The overarching storyline is really solid, and I like that characters from past books continue to show up.
Characters from past books making an appearance, that's something I quite like as well. Even if I sometimes have a big fat question mark stamped on my forehead, trying to remember where I know them from ;-)Might have to check out that series then!
Hooray for the exterminator being done! :-)
Last spring/summer, the ants weren't too bad, but today reminded me of how bad they were when we first moved in. I guess there are worse pests to deal with, but it still makes me feel gross lol.
I'm not sure why, but I could watch that gif all day lol. It's also reminding me that I need to get caught up on Sherlock.
Lol Nichole!Great gif. And yup, I do need to get caught up on Sherlock at some point as well. I've been saying that for a looong time now.
I hate how long of a break there is between seasons, especially when we only get 3 episodes! Still love the show though!
I've only seen the first season. And I think I prefer Watson to Holmes, but that might be actor-related ;-)
I love both of them! I think they play very well off each other. I've seen the first 2 seasons and the first episode of season 3. I don't think it's on netflix anymore so I need to check my library for that and Doctor Who.
No, I wasn't even aware they did a special hehe.I'm not a hardcore enough fan to follow-up on these things it seems.
I haven't watched the special yet either. It's on my to-watch list though. I'm very behind on all my shows lol.
I tend to go through phases where all I want to do is read, or all I want to do is lay around and watch tv or play video games. After my 3 month old was born, it was definitely a tv phase lol. When you're only getting 2 hours of sleep a night, it's hard to get your eyes to focus on a book! I'm finally getting sleep now, so I'm pretty sure a reading phase is going to be starting with the first shelf call today. :)
I just got a parcel with the rest of the Iron Druid Chronicles and oooooh I am SO excited :-D I just want to start reading them all haha.
Me, too! Excitement!Though I'll see it tomorrow morning only as the call is at 0.30am my time aaaaaad no... I have to get up at 6am to go to work.
Ah well, means I can muse over which book to start for this aaaaaall day at work tomorrow haha. While I'm finishing a book for a challenge, of course ;-)
Well, of course the book I really wanted to read for this category,
, is literally the only book in this series my library does not have, and I can't afford to buy new books right now. *sigh*So, I'm most likely going with
. @Armi, I love the Sirantha Jax series. The first book isn't the strongest in the series, but it gets better with each subsequent book.
I'll probably read my free space book first and then my Aliens book. I write reviews for the Dark Faerie Tales website, and need to review
for the site. :)
Hmmm, aliens.... These are the ones I picked off the shelves when I went through them a while ago. Of course 3 aren't UF/PNR, so I may just ignore those, but those were books I knew I have copies of.
Might go with
. I read the first one a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it.Then again, I might also read
to finish off the Lux series. Hmm... The Lux series, while not UF/PNR, is quite good actually, if you're struggling with books to pick from. The first one is
and I enjoyed that quite a bit. (But as mentioned earlier, don't try the audio ;-).)
Weekend away sounds nice! :-)I'm still debating which book to read for the Free Space.. hmm... I'll see about that over the weekend. Monday is a day off, yay! Easter Monday is a bank holiday here.
For Free Space, I'm going to read
. The book has just been staring at me ever since I got home today, soooo, this weekend I'm going to spend some time with it and maybe even finish it, yeah probably finish it hehe.
Oh I love that you're doing lists :-) The unorganisation... yeah... or I confuse myself... or I go with something compleeeeetely different!I'd totally suggest the Mercy Thompson for the Free Space. Good books!
I have my lists for all the shelves elsewhere, but I can always post them here whenever that particular shelf gets called, if you want hehe.
I hope you have a great weekend away, Vilda! Great Free Space choice, Eldarwen! :)
I may be a little MIA the next couple of days. My 18 month old came down with a fever yesterday. I'm taking him to the doctor today to rule out influenza since my niece tested positive for that earlier this week. Thankfully my husband has today off so I don't have to take both kids to the doctor. It's really hard to carry 2 kids at the same time lol.
