BINGO R13 | Discussion Thread
I'm excited for this round now that I'm better equipped (tons of new books) and I'm familiar with the rules :)
I've been waiting not so patiently for round 13 to start. This is gonna be my first bookshelf bingo and I'm super excited.

Mary: Harry Dresden's Love Slave wrote: "There isn't going to be anything weird like "tentacle sex" or something like that right?"Well, if the +200 pages rule still apply....I doubt you will find many odd books that fit that requirement. The category must have enough titles to satisfy the player's reading needs. Then again, there is sometimes a 'reader's choice' shelf so you might be able to read a weird book...who am I to judge?
LOL! >.< No tentacle required reading - promise! :DI'll have the shelf announcement thread, with this round's shelves listed, up very soon.
Those tentacle sex books titles and covers can really crack me up! Not advocating reading but just some titles are real doozies.Of course, someone had to write Fifty Shades of Grey Tentacles and The Billionaire's Tentacles.
Hmm... who can forget the series with I've Fallen and there's a Tentacle in my Butt
...Actually those do sound better than the ones that squickily have to include "breeding" and "insemination."
[Oops, I may now have members hoping they don't get put in a team with me. I promise, it's just the titles that crack me up and not what I normally read.]

Valerie ~ Val Hall ~ wrote: "I've Fallen and there's a Tentacle in my Butt."That is the best title I've read all year. I have no idea why I'm so entertained, maybe lack of sleep has me delirious lol.
ETA: and yay Bingo!
Hey guys, just an update on the shelf announcement time. Judith and Sandra will be posting this round's shelves - here's the time zone conversion between Japan and Cali. (You can use this site to determine what time it'll be in your time zone, if needed.)R13 Shelf Announcement Day/Time:
8:30a JST Thur will be 4:30p PDT Wed

I would play with you! We had fun the last time we were on a team together.
Reminder: R13 sign-up thread will be closing Sunday, 20 Mar. So, spread the word; if you know of anyone who might be interested, send them over now so they don't miss out. (Plus, an even number of players would allow us to have 4 players per team - preferred by most - and right now we're sitting on an odd number)Note: The shelf announcement thread for R13 has been posted. It includes a list of all 24 shelves that will be used in this round. Each shelf is a direct link to a Goodreads shelf, so you can start hunting for your books now, if you'd like.
Also, if you want to add any books to SOS' bookshelf, so they can be used for this round's free space read, please feel free to do so now. If you do, please list any adds as "READ" not "to-read" or "currently reading". Thanks!
Shelf! Shelf!Just practicing :D
Thanks for posting the shelves so I can make a list that I won't even use, lol.
I never made lists, but I made piles. Unfortunately, the piles always kept getting larger and I still picked other books to read most of the time ;-)Love the shelves though! Definitely looking forward to starting this :-)
This is random but I thought I'd share...
This book popped up on my sidebar recommendations (because I shelved an HR) and I thought "Eew, look at that cover"! Yet I had to click on it and see what it was about and it has a 3.91 rating and good reviews! Whaaaaaa? LOL. Anyways, just goes to show you can't always judge a book by it's terrible cover, I guess...
I love that we're more back to shelves! All the color cover things just didn't make it bookshelf BINGO for me but rather seemed like one of the cover hunt challenges.Might miss the Reader's Choice, new to me series/author options previous rounds had.
I'm still undecided about last rounds winning patterns versus this/past rounds' more traditional one. Potentially a longer game with last rounds patterns and shook things up a little but big difference to me was just that every shelf call was in a winning pattern for everyone which was odd (but made every book necessary) and lacked some of the thrill of one call possibly advancing several "in a row" possibilities. I'm sure I didn't like first proposed single winning pattern option (could see teams not reading for shelves not in pattern and others giving up early with no chance of winning because no calls in their cards single possible pattern while other teams had more than half ...)
Gee, I have a feeling many of us will be trying to make these three fit the shelves:
Fire Touched
The Undoing and
Marked in Flesh

My excuse for waiting was I was saving two of those three for travel reading ...now not sure I can "save" them for Bingo...remarkable self-control you have!!!
I like to print out the bingo card, enlarge it and then pencil in a few options for each shelf. Just in case I only have one book for something. It's rare that I have nothing for a shelf but sometimes I might want to reserve the next book(s) in a series at the library if it works for multiple shelves.
Yay Bingo. Is it just me or are the book lists almost identical for Series to Start, 1st in Series, Next in Series, and Series to finish? This may be the year I read the Cinder books.
AH wrote: "Yay Bingo. Is it just me or are the book lists almost identical for Series to Start, 1st in Series, Next in Series, and Series to finish?"They are! Luckily, I still have plenty to choose from :)
probably fits 75% of the shelves so it won't be too difficult. :)I'm also glad we're back to shelves. The whole color business couldn't have been easy for the mods!
D.G. wrote: "... The whole color business couldn't have been easy for the mods!"Or for the color blind. Or the greyscale ereader ebooks. That first round that used cover colors when there was debate on whether something was yellow/blue/teal/whatever enough was really strange to me.
I didn't wade back through older threads but I seem to remember how (I'm still convinced that teal is a cross between green and blue and comes from the shade on the underwing of the waterfowl of same name and a particular set of RGB values and Pantone color id numbers) it got ruled that one cover was either not blue enough or not green enough to qualify as teal and others had wrong percentage of cover in certain colors.
Next rounds were much easier on being so exact on cover colors so were at least better/easier.
And cover hunt and cover color challenges and games can be fun -- it was just odd having them meld into Bookshelf BINGO. And very few past cover challenges are as picky as that first round seemed to be. It's not exactly likely someone would have same devices as the moderators with exact same setting for color displays as what moderators were seeing (or have any control over what mods saw if they wound up emailing a scan of their actual book-cover -- plus that scan could be adjusted to make bookcover whatever color they wanted mods to see) when making their rulings anyway -- so the whole is/isn't enough of that color to qualify just seemed really odd and weird even for cover hunt challenges.
Nici, Here is one way. In Free space rules thread in BSB folder, there is a link to the group's bookshelf. I have tried this in the app and it works. I'm not sure if there is another better method!

I didn't mind cover color shelves at all. I think mods were very relaxed about ruling cover colors, so there was no problems, at least not for me.

I didn't have any trouble with the color shelves either. Are we getting teams soon?
I keep my little bingo card cheat sheet in my purse. I actually do usually do read one of the ones I picked out ahead of time.
Skandia wrote: "...I didn't mind cover color shelves at all. I think mods were very relaxed about ruling cover colors, so there was no problems, at least not for me. ..."I didn't mean color shelves; I didn't play the round(s) where the shelf name was a color. Shelves are shelves.
I meant the rounds where they started making one of the shelf announcements (potential stamps) be for books that had a cover that featured a certain color. The first time they tried it, they were very picky and the following rounds they were more easygoing where it was much easier to find a book that fit. I still enjoyed; but if I want to do cover hunt challenges and other BINGO and game challenges asking for specific covers, I can. It surprised me when they started showing up on the Bookshelf BINGO and again that the criteria for color was so much stricter (first time around) than other cover hunts on goodreads from moderators I usually found more easygoing about stamp criteria.
I think I missed the colour shelves too. I did like the more open-choice options from the last round (like the "read a book with a witch" shelf etc) purely because I can find it hard health-wise to check shelves sometimes. It was nice to have a break sometimes and just look at my actual bookshelves for something that fit. I'm hoping there are some of those next round.Glad to hear I'm not the only one with a cheat sheet - mine is still tucked in the back of my book journal from last round.
I'm constantly re-doing several cheat sheets and shelvings because of BSB; gets a bit obsessive for me.I remember one business dinner where I was sneaking off constantly to restroom with the cellphone app to keep up. The group threads were a real pain back then on the app -- could not sort threads by newest first so had to cellphone-size screen after screen to see new team posts. I was able to relax about it because one time in same restroom I ran into the boss keeping up with their FarmVille.
