Steph Ann | 1220 comments Well, he tested negative for both a UTI and the flu so it's looking like just a virus. Poor kid had to have a catheter for the UTI test and his nose swabbed for the flu test. I gave him Burger King for lunch because I felt so bad lol.

message 52: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments Poor kid indeed! But at least it isn't anything more serious than just a virus, as annoying as that can already be. Hopefully he'll be better soon! :-)

Poor little fellow.
Hope the Burger King cheered him up and that he feels better very soon!

Steph Ann | 1220 comments Thanks, Sandra and Lauren! In true toddler fashion, he only ate a handful of bites of the Burger King food. I should have known better lol.

Lady Jaye (lady-jaye) | 598 comments Hi!!! Just popping in to look around!! Armi, I was a hardcore Mercy fan, until book 6,where the love just died. Although I bought Frost Burned, I was less than interested in reading it, so ended up deleting it from my kindle, so all this rambling is just to say.. "I feel ya."

message 57: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments I actually quite liked Frost Burned. And Night Broken was a really good one. Shame you didn't feel the book all that much!

message 58: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments That's definitely something I like about her as well. It's a more adult series, for lack of a better way of defining it, than some other series out there. That's also something I prefer about the Kate Daniels series.
The characters are firmly rooted in some semblance of life, know who they are, what they expect from their lives and certainly what they aren't going to put up with.

I enjoyed this less than the first one, though I'm not quite sure why that was, hm.

Part of it was certainly that I was starting to get a little annoyed that apparently every single goddess in Atticus' pantheon wants to get into his pants.

The witch dynamics are quite interesting though and it was nice to see some of Atticus' past being developed and coming back as unresolved issues. (Something other than gods and goddesses wanting to use him as their pawn, I mean.)

The widow was brilliant again.

Steph Ann | 1220 comments Just wanted to pop in and say I've finished my Free Space book. I'm getting over the flu though (thanks to my son giving it to me lol), and my brain isn't functioning quite well enough tonight to write a review. I'll post it tomorrow during my son's naptime. :)

I have been looking forward to Joseph's book for awhile now, and for the most part, it delivered. The only issue I really had was with the heroine, Lyka. She was just not likeable for me, which is disappointing considering how much I love Joseph. The book itself was fast paced and entertaining and left me looking forward to the next book, which is really all you can ask for.

For a more in-depth review, see my review at Dark Faerie Tales.

Eldarwen | 2202 comments Good to see you're feeling better again, Steph Ann! At least I hope so, hehe.

Next shelf call tonight, yay! Well, eaaaaaarly early tomorrow morning for me ;-)

I'm currently trying to finish up the last of my March reads - I'm running out of time D: - and then I'll finally decide which book to read for last week's shelf call.

message 63: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25914 comments Good luck with that Vilda :D

Hope all you bookworms are feeling better very soon!!!!

message 64: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25914 comments I loved Grimspace & the Siriantha Jax world :D

message 65: by Steph Ann (new)

Steph Ann | 1220 comments That was the hardest thing about Grimspace for me, Armi, the fact that you're just thrown into the world with no explanation as to how things work. It does get better! :-)

As of today, my family is fever free. Woohoo! I'm still coughing like crazy but oh well lol.

message 66: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25914 comments Just don't give it back to them Steph Ann. Otherwise it could be a neverending story.

message 67: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments Woot, no more fever! That's a good start :-)

I don't want to feel left out, so... I've been battling a very annoying cold/cough since January. It keeps coming back and circulates around at work (we're less than 20 people so it's easy to "spread the love"). So it keeps returning to me... at least not as badly anymore as in January where I felt completely incapacitated.

*clears throat* Anyway!

I like it when you're thrown right into the middle of the fray and slowly have to figure out what the heck is going on, who the characters are and their relation to each other, what the world is like etc. It was like that when I jumped into the Kate Daniels series as well. I had no idea what was really going on and I loved it :-) So Sirantha Jax sounds like something I should pick up soon hehe.

message 68: by Steph Ann (new)

Steph Ann | 1220 comments I should own stock in Purell with how much hand sanitizer I'm using to try and prevent anyone else from getting sick. My mom's birthday is Saturday, and since we missed seeing everybody on Easter, I'm really wanting to be able to make it to the birthday festivities.

message 69: by Steph Ann (new)

Steph Ann | 1220 comments New shelf is up!

Ghosts.

message 70: by Steph Ann (new)

Steph Ann | 1220 comments Sorry you didn't like Grimspace, Armi! The second one is definitely better, but this is coming from someone who enjoys sci-fi, so I'm a bit biased lol. It definitely just might not be your type of series.

For Ghosts, I'm going with Blood Rites (The Dresden Files, #6) by Jim Butcher .

message 71: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments *gasp* I totally forgot!! I wanted to check the shelf first thing this morning when I came into work but I was overwhelmed with work load and until now I didn't remember o.O

Ah but it brightens my day to be able to pick a new book :-D

Armi, Grave Witch (Alex Craft, #1) by Kalayna Price is a really good start into an interesting series.

message 72: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments Book options for me:

The Archived (The Archived, #1) by Victoria Schwab Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children, #1) by Ransom Riggs Grave Visions (Alex Craft, #4) by Kalayna Price The Bone Season (The Bone Season, #1) by Samantha Shannon Darkhouse (Experiment in Terror, #1) by Karina Halle

Probably a few more, though I think I'm going to go with Darkhouse (Experiment in Terror, #1) by Karina Halle .

message 73: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments I've heard good things so far, and since I read the first two books in Halle's Artist trilogy and liked them, I'm thinking I'm probably going to enjoy this one as well. Or so I hope hehe.
Good to know though that you've enjoyed it! Since this group seems to have fairly similar tastes in books :-)

message 74: by Steph Ann (new)

Steph Ann | 1220 comments Experiment in Terror is awesome! They're very fast reads and some of them have some very creepy moments.

Eldarwen | 2202 comments Valek!!! <333333

message 76: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments I loved that first book. So much that I instantly reread it with only skipping a few things to get to the Valek scenes quicker hehe.

Review

This has been on my to read list for a while, but I had been putting off reading it because I was afraid it wouldn't live up to the hype. Happily, I was hooked in chapter 1, and my interest never waned. I'm not always a fan of chapters alternating points of view, but it really worked here. While I did figure out who was behind everything, there were other twists that I didn't see coming, so I really wasn't disappointed in any way. I'll definitely be checking out book 2!

Now this is a heroine I like - witty, vulnerable, a-stereotypical, with curves, with self-esteem issues that are not about imagining a tiny gram too much on their body but are real for a change, and to top things off, she isn't exactly normal.

Then there is Dex, who strikes me as slightly (maybe massively) unhinged but with an interesting twist that still remains to be discovered. I was sold after the mention of the eyebrow ring and his eyes ;-)

I like that both characters have history, and not necessarily the easiest either. It's all the more interesting as most of the background story hasn't been revealed in this first book. There is a lot more to discover about the characters, their past and what the future holds in store for them.

The story itself was interesting, quite creepy in some places (I could envision this in a movie and with special effects, I would probably not want to watch it late at night on my own) though I felt like there could have been a little more to it all. I'm positive however that the story revolving around the lighthouse, or darkhouse, is in no way yet resolved so I'm definitely looking to continuing the series to see what else is in store for Dex and Perry.

3.5 stars - I still need a bit of convincing after all, hehe.

message 81: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments So I keep hearing! I'm definitely looking forward to reading more of this series and the characters! :-)

Ah, the eyebrow ring.. I'm such a sucker for that part of his description haha. And the eyes of course ;-) So changeable and mysterious!

message 82: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments Yay! So glad you loved the book, Vilda!! :-D

Ahhh... I think I need to reread Poison Study some time soon. I miss that initial spark of Valek :-)
And I absolutely need to get my hands on Night Study (Soulfinders, #2) by Maria V. Snyder !! It's been published in January already after all and I still haven't gotten it... tsk tsk ;-)

message 83: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments Also, for the alien shelf, I'm hopefully going to decide which book to read soon.

I am just currently trying to get some of my currently-reading books out of the way because it's bugging me that I have so many half-finished books lying around. Doing good on that so far! Should finish one today, the other tomorrow and then a third somewhere along the next week.. maybe.. hopefully haha.

message 84: by Steph Ann (new)

Steph Ann | 1220 comments It took me forever to find a book that I wanted to read that my library also had! So I'm going with My Soul to Take (Soul Screamers, #1) by Rachel Vincent .

I'm hoping to have my Ghosts book done tomorrow. Then I have to finish a review book before I can start my guilty pleasures read. If all goes as I hope, I should still be caught up by the time the shelf gets called next week. *crosses fingers*

message 85: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (last edited Apr 06, 2016 10:51PM) (new)

Sandra | 25914 comments You can either re-read those 40pgs or pick something else that works for more than 1 challenge Armi :)

The book must be started after the shelf announcement. That's why everyone is waiting for shelf call.

message 86: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments Hmm.. definitely lots of options! And I've already read so many as well...

These are some I'll choose from:

Lover Eternal (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #2) by J.R. Ward Shiver (The Wolves of Mercy Falls, #1) by Maggie Stiefvater A Kiss of Shadows (Merry Gentry, #1) by Laurell K. Hamilton Slave to Sensation (Psy-Changeling, #1) by Nalini Singh Naked in Death (In Death, #1) by J.D. Robb A Hunger Like No Other (Immortals After Dark #2) by Kresley Cole Warm Bodies (Warm Bodies, #1) by Isaac Marion Hunting Ground (Alpha & Omega, #2) by Patricia Briggs Twice Tempted (Night Prince, #2) by Jeaniene Frost

message 87: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments Ah decisions, decisions... I think by just listing my options, I've narrowed it down to 2 I have to choose between.

Hmm...

I'll let you know once I've decided. ;-)

message 88: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments That is a very good deal, Vilda! I would have gone for that, too! I still have that book sitting on my shelf as well.. hmmmmmmmmmm ;-)

Thanks! I'll try and combine this shelf call with one or two more challenges, so it'll take a bit of fiddling hehe.

message 89: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments Going to read something completely different from what I initially thought haha.

Going with Kiss of Steel (London Steampunk, #1) by Bec McMaster .

message 90: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments I haven't read a lot of steampunk either and this is definitely less on the inventor-side, less steam inventions and weird contraptions etc. It focuses more on the fantasy aspect with a hint of mystery thrown in. It's mostly about the characters and their backgrounds rather than the world being filled with steam-powered oddities that take precedence over everything else. At least thta's how it feels to me. I read the Parasol Protectorate series, except for the last one in the series, and those are far more invention-based than this series. Also they're set in a somewhat realistic version of Victorian London, which isn't quite the case in this series.

This series just keeps getting better and better. This book starts off with Harry saving puppies from some demon monkey things, and it just keeps going from there. There was definitely never a dull moment. I loved that Murphy was in this one so much. I love the way she and Harry interact with each other. I'm interested to see where the series goes from here!

message 92: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments Oooh the puppies :-) I loved that first chapter haha.
I'm up to book 11, which I'm hoping to start some time soon. Really good series! :-) Though I like to space them out a little in the meantime to better savour them.

There isn't much to say other than: I loved it!

Getting into the setting was a bit of a challenge at first as the reader is thrown into the world without much explanation- but personally, I love when hints are dropped here and there, the information being fed slowly instead of being dumped onto the reader right away in the first couple of pages.

The characters were interesting and had quite a bit of background that hasn't been completely revealed yet. The major brush strokes have been painted but there is a lot of detailing that still needs to be explorer in the next book(s).

The world has a definite steampunk and Victorian London flair but it isn't set in a reality-based timeline. The hierarchy is different though the class system as well as the flowing dresses are present. Steampunk contraptions are widely spread but the story isn't as heavily based on inventors, steam-driven oddities, etc, as some other steampunk books.

message 94: by Steph Ann (new)

Steph Ann | 1220 comments Glad you enjoyed the book, Eldarwen! That one has been on my TBR list for awhile. I'll have to move it up in priority!

I'm trying to space out the Dresden series too. It's hard sometimes cuz they're such fast, good reads.

Eldarwen | 2202 comments You've piqued my curiosity hehe. I have a Robin Hobb trilogy on my shelf but I keep mixing up which one it is. Either way, methinks I need to pick the first one up soon.

Gosh, for how many books/series have I said that lately?! Maybe I should start making a list.....

message 100: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2202 comments Ok, I'll definitely check where the trilogy is located within the whole realm. Would definitely be better to start at the beginning! You're right about that :-)

Hm, maybe I should create myself a shelf like that.. I've been meaning to actually put some order into my shelves and create a few more than the ones I currently have (very few hehe). A project for some time soon... ;-)
