I got used to it surprisingly quickly, unusual as it was. I gave it 5 ★s

I'm afraid I won't be giving it 5 stars...it'll be lucky to be 4 at this stage :(

Burial Rites by Hannah Kent

message 807: by Veronica ⭐️ (new)

Veronica ⭐️ | 2384 comments I'm currently reading Eleanor & Park. Not my usual choice but it's very sweet so far.

message 808: by B the BookAddict (new)

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) Settling down later today with a nice easy feeling novel, The Island by Elin Hilderbrand which I've read before and rated a mere 2★. But after the stress of moving, my brain needs a just bit of a girlie read (not my usual fare).

message 809: by K (new)

K | 1143 comments I have started reading Maizy The Bear Charmer and Wicked Beat

message 810: by Sally906 (new)

Sally906 | 86 comments Seeing as Melborne Cup is coming up - I've picked up Each Way Bet by Ilsa Evans Each Way Bet by Ilsa Evans one of my favourite Chick Lit/Women's Fiction Aussie Authors - I need light and fluffy but well written books at the moment and Ilsa fits the criteria perfectly.

Set in Melbourne at melbourne cup time it follows two sisters - one single and fancy free and the other a married stay at home mum whose had enough - each think the other has the best life. So on Melbourne cup eve they swap!!!

I haven't read any Isla Evans yet but this one sounds fun. Sometimes you do need something light to read.

You should pick up the first of her cosy crime series - Nefarious Doings (Nell Forrest Mystery, #1) by Ilsa Evans Nefarious Doings - has a minor character that you might recognise - ME!!!! I won a competition to be a character in the book so there I am - Sally the president of the wine appreciation club - lol!!! I pop up in the next 2 books too - only fleeting mentions but still. Didn't make it into the 4th which was a shame as I wouldn't have minded cruising around the Greek Islands ;)

Haha Sally that's fantastic. I did enter Isla's comp to name one of her books. I enjoy her competitions. I have [book:Flying the Coop|6389679] (which I can't get to link) and Sticks and Stones on my shelf so I'll have to bump them up a bit.

message 818: by B the BookAddict (new)

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) Hey Sally, what a great thing, you are immortalized in print. I'd get a real kick out it, if it were me. Do you like wine in real life?

message 819: by Tango (new)

Tango | 290 comments Have just started Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children which is engrossing and entertaining thus far. Still ploughing through Moby-Dick; or, The Whale which has moments of brilliance and many digressions.

Yes - in a very non-expert way we and 2 other couples meet once every 6'weeks or so and whoever is hosting serves 3 different wines. The bottles are wrapped in paper so we are 'blind' tasting and we try and guess the wine from taste alone. Of course we try to be sneaky and get a blend or something. But is a lot of fun.

So yea, I like my wine.

Sally906 | 86 comments I am currently reading a book by an Aussie author

The Art of Keeping Secrets by Rachael Johns The Art of Keeping Secrets by Rachael Johns

Love her books and this is a stand alone - started reading it during my lunch break today - but it is one of those books where you are grabbed from page one and then wish like billy-oh that work will end so you can go home and read some more!!!

Let me tell you that hubby will be having last night’s leftovers heated up on toast tonight to minimise time in the kitchen!!!

Heck – the story is so good – HUBBY might be heating the leftovers so I get more reading time in! LOL!

message 828: by Ryan (new)

Ryan I just started The Emperor's Blades and it's not too bad.

message 829: by Susan (new)

Susan (goodreadscomsusanaustralia) | 452 comments I'm half-way through This Side of Paradise. Gawd, it has turned tedious, but I hear the last 20 pages or so are great.

Marina Finlayson | 285 comments LOL, Susan! Maybe they're great because the book's nearly over then!

message 831: by Khenan (new)

Khenan Bragador | 140 comments Currently reading The Pillars of the Earth. After just finishing Middlemarch which was written wonderfully, Pillars is just a really big let down. The way he explains the architecture of the churches and his writing is just average. I've had it on my tbr for so long so I really want to finish it but it really is a struggle to finish...

oh well onwards and upwards, hopefully my next book will be better

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) lol, Sally, treat 'em mean, keep 'em keen!

Khenan, I agree with you; I find Follett's writing too dry to really involve me in the story.

I agree too Khenan. I have tried The Pillars of the Earth twice and gave up both times.

Update - hubby cooked the left overs - wrapped cold savoury mince and vegetables in a frozen square of puff pastrey and called it a pie ;)

Oh yeah, that is one creepy book alright.

message 839: by Susan (new)

Susan (goodreadscomsusanaustralia) | 452 comments As a break from This Side of Paradise, I thought I’d read something light, so started The Rejected Writers’ Book Club — but only made it to the 7% point. I don't want to be unkind to a first-time writer, but...

Then I picked up The President’s Hat, which I'm enjoying very much. It’s set in Paris in 1986, which co-incidentally was the first time I visited Paris, so that adds to the enjoyment.
