Ang from OZ | 1690 comments Still making my way through "The Proper Care and Maintenance of Friendship" I am really enjoying this one, and I think even more so than Random Acts of Kindness. I read half the book in one sitting last night and could have kept going. But thought I had better get some shut eye for the big meeting at work this morning.

Great Tarheelgirl, once we are both finished we can have a bit of a discussion about the book.

(I hope you don't mind that Debbie? Also anyone else who would like to chime in that would be great)

Hi Susan, yes I see that, I entered the giveaway. It sounds interesting doesn't it. I am a sucker for a good dance movie. And the description in the give away said Perfect Chemistry meets Save the Last Dance. Early reviews look promising as well. :)

I think that's a lovely idea and I'm setting up a thread right now for you

And I think I enjoyed The Proper Care and Maintenance of Friendship more than R A of K but I also think that's because it was an all inclusive novel.
I can't wait to read and join in on your conversations about TPC&MOF

If ever you want a thread just ask!

Kamas Kirian (kamas716) | 928 comments I'm working my way through Martha Grimes' Richard Jury novels. The early novels seem different than the Jury I remember from later (well mid-series anyway) novels. I kind of lost interest after The Rainbows End, so it will be interesting what my feelings are once I get to that point.

Kamas, Hi thanks for sharing. How long ago did you read them? I know my tastes in fiction changes with my age.
Have a great weekend!

I'm still trying to get through my required reading.

I am finished with "The Proper Care and Maintenance of Friendship" and now I am reading Night Swim. It was one of the B&N freebies sometime back and Susan has already read it and gave it 5 stars, so I feel like I will probably like it too!

Ang from OZ | 1690 comments I'm going to start a preview I downloaded of Red Hill. If I like it I'll get the full version. Sounds like an interesting read and reviews I have seen look promising. A new author for me. We'll see how it goes. Red Hill by Jamie McGuire

Ang from OZ | 1690 comments Still waiting on my new credit card so I can get the full version of Red Hill. Currently reading a preview of "The Discovery of Witches" not sure I like it, its a bit strange to start off with. Did you find it hard to get into Debbie?

A Discovery of Witches (All Souls Trilogy, #1) by Deborah Harkness

Well, I started The Orphan Train today at lunch. Then tonight I found The Memory Box free with the Kindle app on my Nook, so I got interested in it. It is supposed to be free today and tomorrow (July 31) if anyone is interested. I haven't read much, but so far it is very intriguing.

It was a bit hard for the first chapter or two but after that it was clear sailing the rest of the very large book. You have a good advantage Ang as you don't have to wait 1.5 years in between volumes. I think you'll really like it once it takes off. There's just so much mystery at first, so many things we don't know and so many things that Diana doesn't know either. Stay with it I think you'll be glad you did

Ang from OZ | 1690 comments Finished reading Red Hill, wow I really enjoyed it. And picked up another of Jamie McGuire's books and polished it off as well. It was a novella called "Happenstance" I thought it was great also. There is going to be another two parts to the novella so I am looking forward to reading the second once it comes out.

I read them in the mid-90's. My mother sent me The Old Silent and got me hooked. So I borrowed a bunch of hers until I kind of lost interest in them. I always like Melrose, and still do. Jury I always thought a little morose and melancholy, but I'm not finding him quite so in the early novels. I'm enjoying the re-reads so far.

Karen Laird (shadetreebookreviews) | 228 comments Recommend for future group read. The Boy in the suitcase by Leen Kaareberbol and Agneta Finns. It is part mystery, part action, part thriller, and 100% tug on any mother's heartstrings. The story manages to take you all over northern Europe and makes you afraid to breathe before you turn the next page. But you have to, for the good guys have to protect and take care of the young innocent they found hidden away in a suitcase that they were asked to deliver to someone for a friend. The friend ended up dead. And the Grande chase and search for truth start.
I lost a nights sleep because I couldn't put the book down till I knew what happened to the little boy. So much for that box of tissue and pound of M&Ms....

Ang from OZ | 1690 comments I finished off the "Providence Trilogy" by Jamie McGuire. I am binge reading everything by this new author I have found. Really enjoying all her books. Currently just starting "Beautiful Disaster" apparently this book got some bad reviews once it was released as it contained a bit of scary violence! I'm game though. Also read the "Kalona's Fall" novella by PC Cast. Been a very busy reading week. Next up will be Orphan Train.

B&N has had a classic for free almost every day lately. Today it's "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" if anyone is interested. That's how I got "Wuthering Heights." Soon I want to read "Frankenstein." I've never read it either. It's hard to believe it was published in 1818.

Ruth | 206 comments I am reading this really fantastic book "The Watsons Go to Birmingham - 1963." It is a middle grades book narrated by the middle child of the family, Kenneth, about a middle-class black family in Flint, MI. The stories are so normal, but expressed in such a way as to make them compelling and simply delightful.

The trip to Birmingham, AL, the climax of the narration, brings home the realities of being black in the rural south in the 1960s. Up to that point, the Watsons could have been any family in any time in history.
