Kamas Kirian (kamas716) | 928 comments Finished Cop World by James McClure about the San Diego PD and its development and implementation of Community Oriented Policing. WOW! So good. At the time it was apparently a pretty revolutionary approach to law enforcement. Today so much of it is a part of every day policing that it just seems like it's the way it's always been.

I wish my grandfather was still around so I could pick his brain about what it was like back when he was Sheriff in the '60's and '70's. Most of the people I know that were cops back in the '70's are retired now and hard to get a hold of, or dead.

Gonna start another of the Richard Jury novels, this one Rainbow's End

Kamas, thanks for the great comments on Cop World. It would really be interesting to talk to some retired cops and see all that and also what they think of all the new technology like DNA and body armor, dash cams etc.

I think I'll look that one up

Reading The Overlook by Michael Connelly. My goal is to finally get caught up with the Bosch series. After this one, there's at least a couple I've already read, so I think I might actually get around to reading the most recent one this year! It will be nice if by the time the next one in the series comes out, that I am waiting to read it!

Enjoy!

Ang from OZ | 1690 comments Yesterday I started shattered secrets by Karen Harper the first book in her cold creek series. I really enjoyed it so on to book two now. They class the books as romantic suspence where as I would say more suspence thriller, myself

message 413: by [deleted user] (new)

Currently reading Blood Line: A Thriller by John J. Davis that I just downloaded for free. Not too far into it yet, but so far it has a lot of action.

Blood Line A Thriller (Granger Spy Novel, #1) by John J. Davis .

Stay safe Susan!

And I guess "Go the Seahawks" (I have no idea who either of them are)

message 417: by [deleted user] (new)

Go Seahawks here too! I am not really a football fan, but my husband pulls for the Miami Dolphins and finds it impossible to pull for the Patriots.

Okay Football's over the Big Game's been decided so if you don't watch Hockey in North America what's a sports fan to do? :)
Read– So what's on your weekend reading list?

message 419: by [deleted user] (new)

Right now, it's all about college basketball here leading into March Madness next month!

I am reading The Gingerbread House by Carin Gerhardsen.

message 420: by Ang from OZ (new)

Ang from OZ | 1690 comments I'm going to finish off what I'm reading today and make a start on Water for Elephants. I have my Mum here visiting, and we're going to do some retail therapy to cheer me up!

message 421: by Kamas (new)

Kamas Kirian (kamas716) | 928 comments I don't care for basketball all that much, and hockey is only fun to watch in person. Nascar starts in couple weeks at least.

I started re-reading the old Lovejoy novels by Jonathan Gash. I haven't read any of those since highschool.

Debbie (dhaupt) | 4773 comments Mod
Wow it sounds like everyone is busy reading

Ang enjoy your mum's visit - I'll be picking up Water for Elephants soon!

Kamas I want to know how you like the books after so long. Some books that I've picked up again just don't do it for me while others I enjoy more

Susan enjoy your read!

I just got knocked for a loop woke up dizzy, headache, sore throat and an earache. Looks like it's off to the doc for me! :(

Kamas Kirian (kamas716) | 928 comments Just finished The Judas Pair. I remembered many of the major plot points, but not very many of the minor ones. I thought the guilty party was pretty obvious, but that might have been because I read it before. The striking point for me was how much of a cad Lovejoy is. He doesn't treat his women well, slugging his girlfriend at the beginning of the book because she won't shut up while he's on the phone. All said, I do like Lovejoy as a character and very much enjoyed the story. Now, onto the next one.

Okay guys and dolls it's Friday the 13th and tomorrow is V-Day
Do you have any reading planned for this weekend.
My best friend is heading off to Hawaii for a week starting tomorrow but she's making me go with her to see 50 Shades of Grey when she gets back. I haven't read the books so she's giving me her audios of them. Don't know how the other drivers will interpret my facial expressions on my commutes the next week or so LOL

Otherwise I'm still working on my May reviews :0

What about you?

message 429: by [deleted user] (new)

I hope to get further along with "Water for Elephants" this weekend. I know Ang and Susan are ready for the discussion.

message 430: by Ang from OZ (new)

Ang from OZ | 1690 comments Debbie I tried to read fifty shades. Got about five chapters in and thought this is trash! I've better things to read!

I started Shelter Me, the first book in the second chance rance by Cathetine Mann. And... looking forward to discussions about Water for Elephants! !!

message 431: by Kamas (new)

Kamas Kirian (kamas716) | 928 comments I'm on to my 3rd Jonathan Gash novel, hope to finish it this weekend at work.

message 432: by [deleted user] (new)

I haven't read Fifty Shades either, but it doesn't sound like it's for me. From the chapters you did read, Ang, what did you think about the writing? I have heard that it's a poorly written book. I also think people either love it or hate it.

Then I've got one for LibaryJournal, a debut author

Then I may get to read one or two for pleasure before I start all over ;)

thanks for sharing everyone don't let old man winter get you down!!

Ang from OZ | 1690 comments Reading the Fifty Shades Trilogy. Never have I hated characters more in a book. Christian Grey I would like to stab. And Anastasia Steele I would like to punch in the face. Too me the books are like trying to put a positive spin on "Domestic Violence"

EEk, see that's why I don't want to read them. Why are they so popular? My daughter loved them and so did her friends and these are very Female minded women who rule their roosts. I just don't get it. I did promise I'd see the movie w/my BFF, Yikes! ;)

message 439: by Ang from OZ (new)

Ang from OZ | 1690 comments Deb, that's my opinion. Not so much physical violence. But emotional violence. Still domestic violence to me though. If you took that out and the author was a bit more imaginative with words it would be an okay story.

Who ever edited this series in my opinion didn't do a very good job. Using the same descriptive words for more than one sentence in a row is frustrating to read.

And there is only so many times you want to see "oh my" and "gasps" and "exploding"!!

I say if you want steamy sex scenes there are much better books and authors than this. I would be interested to hear your take on the series though :)

Oh boy the weather is FINALLY going to warm up this weekend. Maybe all the snow will even melt. I waited in line at the car wash last night but I'm going to need another one because of all the chemical residue left behind.
And it's the perfect weekend to go outside and take inventory of what your gardens will need soon.
And also your reading garden will need to grow because of all the inside time we've all had this winter.
I'm trying desperately to get My May reviews done. I've actually gave up one of my series to review. I just never have time for my reading time. So even though I feel guilty it's a huge weight lifted off me because they took two weeks to read and review.

I'm also reading Lincoln's Bodyguard In a Heroic Act of Bravery Saves Our Beloved President! John Wilkes Booth Killed in Act of Treason by T.J. Turner Lincoln's Bodyguard, it's an alternate history but without the woowoo of Stephen King's 11/22/63 but it's a very different world none the less.

What are you reading this weekend?
How's the weather in your neck of the woods?

message 442: by Kamas (new)

Kamas Kirian (kamas716) | 928 comments I'm in the middle of a couple of books. I started Tau Ceti, but I didn't have it on my other NST yet. So then I started The King in Yellow.

message 443: by Ruth (new)

Ruth | 206 comments I just finished "Woman Who Rides Like a Man", the third book in the Song of the Lioness series by Tamara Pierce. What a great find! It is one reason I enjoy lists of "best of" books. I never would have known about it without the "Ultimate Backseat Reads" from NPR. I have discovered so many great books on that list.

I also found the "Bartimaeus" trilogy by Jonathan Stroud, of which I just started the third book in the series. He also wrote a fourth book as a prequel, and has a new series, Lockwood & Co.

message 444: by Ang from OZ (new)

Ang from OZ | 1690 comments I just finished Vision in Silver by Anne Bishop. The third in her "others" series. I love this series so much! Pity they only release once a year!

Next up Dead Heat by Patricia Briggs, another long time author that I read. After that it will be Senseless Acts of Beauty!!!!!

Glad to hear all the great reading choices.

Ruth I haven't heard about this list from NPR is it written somewhere? I listen to NPR sometimes but have to admit been listening to my pleasure books while I commute lately so radio hasn't been on

Holy Cow Kamas what an interesting choice in The King In Yellow and I never knew there was a genre called weird fiction. It sounds interesting let us know what you think.

Susan gah all the changes for voting. Good luck and sorry to hear you have to return to full time a month early. Unless you want to that is
weather here too is finally improving

Ang - Wow it's hard to imagine that April is right around the corner I'll have the reading schedule up soon!
