Maddie (maddisonbruce) | 3778 comments Just making sure, but I can't read a book that I started before this challenge, right? Like I can't count it if I started it before this challenge started?

Shy The WidowMaker (booklovingmama) | 847 comments Sorry ladies I am normally not still up that late to roll for us. If someone wants to do that every week and post the roll here thats fine. Maddison the post on our spot is for when we have all read and I link up the reviews.

Shy, I am usually up that late. I don't sleep much so I can roll if nobody else wants to. I didn't think it about it last night.

Maddie (maddisonbruce) | 3778 comments I'll read Kaitangata Twitch by Margaret Mahy. Surprised I found a book I own that's short enough I can actually read :p

And when it says reviews are needed, how exactly do I write a review and how long does it have to be? Can I just say what I liked about it and what I didn't?

Nicole Field (nicolefield) | 245 comments Hmm, still trying to decide which one I'm going to read, but it's almost certainly going to be Shadows by Robin McKinley or This Shattered World (Starbound, #2) by Amie Kaufman

No you are not locked in. you can change your book as many times as you need to...but you need to have your review in on time.

A Midsummer Night's Scream (Dulcie O'Neil, #7) by H.P. Mallory
Book: A Midsummer Night's Scream by H.P. Mallory
Qualification: Dulcie O'Neil series book 7
Finished: 1/16/16
Rating & Review: ★★★★
This book has been a long time coming (3 years since the last book was released) so I was happy to find it was out. I loved that Knight and Dulcie were still together despite Knight getting very little action in this book. Jax was a nice character addition. He makes the perfect hot looking bad guy. I also enjoyed the sparring between Dulcie and Bram. Bram is still convinced that she wants him despite her many rejections of him- LOL. I would like to see some of the other creatures get a bigger part in the next book. Vampires, loki and fairies seem to get the most attention. There are ogre's, sprites, pixies and gnomes that get a quick mention and that is all.

Once again, the book ends with a cliffhanger. I just hope it isn't another three years until the next one is released!

Qualification: Author M
Finished: 17/1
Rating and Review: 3 stars

I only gave this book 3 stars because it was a short read, only 182 pages, and didn't have much character development at all, but then again I did only read it for this challenge. Lucky I found such a short book I own with the author M :) I couldn't really relate to the main character, because she was 11, but I liked the rebelliousness of her sister Kate.

Shy The WidowMaker (booklovingmama) | 847 comments Maddison what are you meaning? Everyone has posted what they are reading for the week. Reviews just need to be in on time.

Love So Perfect (The Lawson Brothers) (Volume 5) by Marquita Valentine

So I wound up changing my books a few times to make sure I would be able to have enough time to read it and post. I decided on Love So Perfect for two reason. I knew it would be a quick read and I love Marquita Valentine’s books. She a North Carolinian author whose book are generally set her books in the state and are chick lit.
This one is 5th in series of the Lawson Brothers. I have enjoyed all of the brother’s stories so far and most of the characters, some secondary characters I could do without. Austin found himself in hot water after a break up video went viral and didn’t show him in the best light with his coach. He winds up being sent home for a few months to stay out trouble. While there he meets Harper. Even though he uses her to help his public image at first, he realizes he wants something more from her. The book is very predictable knowing that everything will wind up blowing up in his face. I was okay with it for this book. I needed a light and fun read and this certainly fit the bill.

How it Fits M Author

I read this book because it scores an A+ on the diversity exams. Black main protagonist, disability/disorder, bisexuality. It also showed up on a list with a bunch of other books I’d recently read recently and loved, so when I found it at my library on the weekend, I was ecstatic.
And then I started reading it in little doses. Because, although the main story is about a bisexual girl who wants to get out of Nebraska being bullied by her lesbian support/friendship group at school for suddenly going and daring to date a boy, a big part of her identity is anorexia.
And man the depictions of being anorexic, and the mindsets you get pulled into are graphic. And when I say ‘graphic’, I mean ‘accurate as FUCK’. Not just that, but she’s not “as bad” as one of the other characters, so there’s also her personal analysis on how she’s not a “real anorexic” because hell at least she eats. And I just felt guilty for eating and also feeling so. damned. glad. that I can again.
So, the first half of this book was challenging. And, in a way, I felt disappointed because it wasn’t as well written as The Fault in Our Stars, which is forever my best go-to on challenging texts, but I didn’t feel the same need to keep reading. I mean, I obviously did.
And then, I don’t know.
Something changed, and I… It was suddenly this empowering as FUCK story about a bunch of teens who don’t know what they’re doing, where they’re going, but they’re making these decisions anyway, and they are all doing the best they can, and I’m just holding my hand to my chest reading avidly.
I mean, the main cast of characters all kind of speak like me and my friends, but this really caught me in the second half of this book, because so many of these guys could have been me and my friends, minorities, and people who feel passionately about the various arts.
Yeah, there were specifics about this book that didn’t gel specifically with me and mine, but that didn’t matter, because it was just such a strong message of be yourself and find your strength and just be, and I loved the hell out of that and wanted more.

Book read: Maui Madness Zoe Donovan Mysteries Book 7 by Kathi Daley Maui Madness Zoe Donovan Mysteries Book 7
Series: Zoe Donovan Mystery #7
Date read: 01/20/16
Rating: ★★★
Review:
Zoe has gone on a trip to Hawaii to help Ellie recover from being dumped by her fiance. Levi and Zak also join along. They are all enjoying Hawaii and go to a luau at the home of a friend of Zak's, and when the roasted pig is uncovered for the feast, they find a roasted dead body instead. As usual, Zoe starts poking around and asking questions to figure out whodunit and why. I just started reading this series last month, and I have been enjoying Zoe and her antics in her small town. It was nice to learn a little about Hawaii's history in this one, and of course it made me want to visit Hawaii more than ever! This was another enjoyable addition to the series.

Of Shadow and Stone by Michelle Muto
Spot: Author name with M
Rating: 2.5 Stars
Finished 1/21/16

Review:
I really tried to like this one because it started off well enough and had be interested in the beginning but then we got to the world building. It was just way too much of it the author went overboard with the details and the descriptions and I think after a while I kinda stopped paying attention. I can't even say I really connected with the characters but I guess Kate was ok as a heroine. I guess I didn't see why everyone had to be rich and good looking in the book. It just read like a cliche to me. I think the things I liked the most would have to be the Gargoyles.

Shy The WidowMaker (booklovingmama) | 847 comments Ok I have all reviews linked up this far. We are just waiting on Tayajay and then we are done for the week. If she gets hers in today we will get the free pass.

I miss reading books by this author. It had been too long since I read a new book and not a old favorites. The title is perfect for what happened in this book. Lot of things went down out of nowhere. Just when I thought I could relax into the story boom somethings happened. The main theme beside the romance is the family. Family is not just people you share DNA with. Family can really mess you up. One thing that I miss from this book is how the characters recovered after truth bombs were drop. It happened off page mostly but then again did I need to read it. The book is still fresh in mind to settle on how I ultimately felt about the off page action.
