Question about debut authors, does it have to be an author that debuted in 2015 or can it be any debut novel? Thanks!

Completed 10/10!

And a few (hopefully welcome) recommendations...

This time I don't think I'm going to do a potential pool since I tend to never pick from them anyways.

First of all - how about some reccomendations?
Book #1 - Gift:

This one isn't exactly a gift because it isn't one I get to keep, but my best friend thrust this one into my hands because I had never read it and only ever read one Sarah Dessen book in my entire life and this was "so not okay". It's her favorite book, she called it her bible, so this one is pretty important for me to start out with this year. Gift enough, as far as I'm concerned.
Book #2

That one will count for new genre. It's a dark, non-ya suspense novel which is wayyyy out of my comfort zone (in a good way!)
Book #3

That one is going to count for debut author! I think it might actually still be an arc, so super debut author lol
Book #4

First in a new series. I've heard great things, so I'm really excited!!
Book #5
I am definitely going to do a new author to me for this one, but I have a lot of options in my kindle as ARCs/EGalleys and quite a bit on my IRL shelf as well, so I need to narrow down some choices for this one.
Book #6
I would really love a recommendation! I'm going to go through the Recommendations forum and pick one. If not, I'll be trying to find a book with the word 'New' in the title :)

I may try to go for all ten categories, we'll see how I do. I'm having a hard time finding a new Feb release that I want to read that isn't second or more in a series and available at the library!

Welcome to the challenge, Melanie! The idea is to aim for one of each checklist item - so if you want to use both Paper Magician and Clockwork Angel, would one of them work as a "New to you Author"? Or is it possible that one of these was given to you as a gift?

New series:

Not my usual genre (historical fiction):

Completed:

- Read the first book in a series that is new to you:

~This book has been on my to read list forever. Glad I finally got to it because I really enjoyed it. I have read the second one and now that the challenge is over, I will be finishing this series first.
- Read a brand new author to you:

~I didn't even know this one existed. Huge Oz fan as a kid so I enjoyed the different take. Will continue this series too.
- Read a debut author:

~This one was pretty good. I thought it was a unique concept. The end felt a bit crowded and rushed though.
- BRAND New Release!
January:

~Really enjoyed this one. I am looking forward to more releases in this series!
February:

~This was my first Gena Showalter book. I really like her writing style and enjoyed this book. Looking forward to more in this series too.
March:

~Just missed the mark on this one (I will likely finish it today).
- Read a book in a genre that’s new to you (or not a genre that you normally read):

~I did NOT like this book. This is not a genre a normally read, but this book, told from the POV of a family member affected by transgender issues, I thought would be a good read. But I did not care for the sister's character or the way in which this was written.
- Read a book that you received as a gift for the holidays:

~This was just ok. It was odd and predictable. But I suppose it might speak to the intended aged audience dealing with loss.
- Read a book with the word "New" in the title:

~I did not expect to like this one at all. But I actually enjoyed it. Light, quick, fun read. I will probably continue this series off and on when I need a break from other, more series reads.
- Read a new book/author recommended to you by someone in YA-MA!:

~I plucked this one as a rec from a few posts (especially the one where the member dropped out of the challenge to continue this series). I loved it. This will probably be the second series I continue.

genre I don't usually read:

I'm sure there will be others, and I'm going to try really hard to finish this challenge!

Perfection! You're already well into the challenge, then :)

Hi Tiffany! Welcome to challenge land!
Yes, basically you just jump right in. As you read titles for the challenge, you send a message in this thread and I'll update your progress as you go (in message #2 - you can see some folks already have read a few).
Many people also update their progress by editing their initial post in order to show what they've completed or what they hope to read, so they can keep track themselves - but you totally don't have to do that.
Let me know if you have any other questions! I've gone ahead and added you to the list as #27. When you make progress posts, feel free to remind me of your number :)

Haha! I always love the enthusiasm for the New New New challenge :)

Hi Diane - The idea is one from each category. (Though, of course, you *can* read a new author within every category, if you choose :P).
I'll try to make that more clear in the rules :)

I basically meant that we should read a first time novel from an author that hasn't published anything previously/doesn't have a reputation in the publishing industry. I think the general notion of a debut author is that they are fairly recent - but I'm open to authors published within the last 5ish years. Does that make sense?
Wendy, I'd definitely count the author's you mention. They still only have a single book out at this time, so I'd still consider them a "new" author.

Completed 8/9?

January - Illuminae (1/8)
February - A Court of Thorns and Roses (2/3)

The first quarter challenge runs from January 1st to March 31st.
Let’s take on the NEW YEAR by focusing on all the new things!
How it works:
Your goal is to read at least 6 books total, using the checklist below as your guide - one from each category. (Fulfilling each category would get you to 10 books total in this challenge. I encourage you to try!)
The Checklist
- Read the first book in a series that is new to you
- Read a brand new author to you
- Read a debut author
- BRAND New Release! Read a book in the month that it’s released (may be done 3 times during this challenge – one in January, one in February, and/or one in March). Non YA books are accepted for this category
- Read a book in a genre that’s new to you (or not a genre that you normally read) Non YA books are accepted for this category
- Read a book that you received as a gift for the holidays (Pictures & stories of the gift are encouraged!). Gifts to yourself can definitely count! Non YA books are accepted for this category
- Read a book with the word "New" in the title
- Read a new book/author recommended to you by someone in YA-MA! (Feel free to use this challenge forum to ask for recommendations from one another)
♦ Audio books are allowed.
♦ All of the books MUST be at least 150 (paper) pages in order to qualify for this challenge. If the kindle or eBook pages are different than the paper count, please provide the correct number, so no books are left out unjustly. If you are reading an ebook only book, the word count MUST be a minimum of 45,000.
♦ Books for this challenge must be YA unless an exception has been noted on the checklist (there are 5 exceptions).
I'll be keeping track of participant’s progress (as much as possible) in post #2. Participants will be listed alphabetically by their name and the number of their original post in the challenge.
When posting your progress, please remember to use the number attached to your original post as well. (This will be especially useful to save me from mixing up folks with similar names).
