Challenge 1 of 2016: New, New, New!!

Hi Linda - Which category are you using for this one?"
Sorry about that. New author to me.

(The one in March, though, will need to be finished before the April 1, since our challenge ends at the end of March). Let me know if there are any questions on this!

- Read the first book in a series that is new to you

- Read a brand new author to you

- BRAND New Release! Read a book in the month that it’s released

The next book I just started is

I LOVED The Wrath and The Dawn!!!!! Actually, I really liked the Winner's Curse too but Wrath was a delightful surprise to me...

The book was

Edit: This book also has a 12 year old MC and a 16 year old MC, as well as R (or so it sounds from the back of the book). Here's hoping!

Hmmmm. That's a hard one! Normally, I default to the Chicago Public Libraries definition, but they don't have that book listed (that I can find). I'll check in with Wendy, since I know she's read it, and I'll let her make the call :)

It's never to late to join, Day! Welcome aboard!

A-ha! Thanks, Christie! That's exactly why I tell people to double check my work. :P It should be up-to-date now :)

Okay - I think the consensus is that we'll let this one count due to younger main characters and such - though, it's a tricky one and definitely in a gray area!

I went ahead and added you to the list. Welcome to the fun, Erika!

Hi Brandi! Do you want this to be categorized under new series, new author, or something else?

I have it categorized as new genre :)

YAY! I won't read any other Adult novels for this challenge, just to play fair since this is a gray area book :) So excited though because my library actually had it! (And so far it's good)

How did you like the book? This is one of my most favorite books :)

Brandi, I heard a lot of good things about the Wrath and the Dawn but for some reason always put it to the side for other things. I'm so glad I finally read it, now I understand what all the hype was about :)
I'm on the last few pages of the Winner's Curse right now, it's good, but a little confusing at times. I'm hoping the second book is better...

Hi Laurel - unfortunately, you already have a book for the "new author" category. We're trying to get one from each category, not doubling up.
Would either of the books you read work for a different category? A gift you recently received? Or a genre you don't normally read? Or was one of them recommended to you by someone in YA-MA?

I finished number 1 which was

Starting number 2 now which is

I've got a lot of library books that are not new to me to read, so I'm going to take a break from the challenge for now. :)

Rae - I think that you make a very compelling argument, actually. I'm going to open up the "new to me" genre to accepting non-YA categories - because I'm going to guess that for many of us, if we want a truly "new" genre, we'll have to get out of YA! Hahaha.

Hi Linda - Yep! I'll totally count that. :) Also, enjoy it! It's a great book.

Yep! Actually - I'm about to open up the "new-genre" category to include non-ya books, since that really opens up the options for truly reaching outside our normal genres. :)

Great reading, everyone!

I do highly recommend it, but not to everyone. It's a very particular style of humor (very British and wacky - think Terry Pratchett or Monty Python).
For instance, some quotes:
“For a moment, nothing happened. Then, after a second or so, nothing continued to happen.”
or
“The ships hung in the sky in much the same way that bricks don't.”
I read it when I was younger and loved it. And I still love it, but I know that there are some days when maybe it's not what I want to read (as its not particularly deep). It's just a fun, very witty, space adventure. And sidenote: The BBC Radio play is brilliant.
