Diane | 1234 comments Finished #2 Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone I am putting this down as recommended to me because not only has it been recommended to my by people in this group , it has been demanded that I finally get around to it by friends and now my daughter :) It seems I am one of the very few over 16 that had not read Harry Potter!

What did you think? I have had indexing for awhile but have not gotten to it

message 106: by Melanie, looking for a partner in crime (new)

Melanie | 1911 comments Diane wrote: What did you think? I have had indexing for awhile but have not gotten to it"

I loved both of them. They were originally released as Kindle serials--1 chapter released every 2 weeks--which is how I read Indexing. They are a wonderful mix of crime fighting drama (which never gets old for me) and fairy tales. Despite their episodic nature, there is a through line to each story.

message 107: by Diane (new)

Diane | 1234 comments I actually started Indexing as the serial and only got through like 3 chapters or episodes before life got in the way and I never picked it back up. It was that 2 week wait that got in the way. I already have that one so maybe I will start it over and move on to #2 since it can be read in one chunk now.

message 108: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie updated post #5! 5 finished!

message 109: by R.A. (new)

R.A. Desilets | 375 comments Finished The New Hunger (Warm Bodies #1.5) by Isaac Marion today! New in title - and it will be my one and only "borderline" (YA/adult) book this challenge. ^_^ Didn't have as much of the lyricism that I loved so much in Warm Bodies, but was still a fun read. Nice to get some of their back stories.

message 110: by Barb (new)

Barb Finished #4 - Gentleman Jole and the Red Queen by Lois McMaster Bujold - just released last week. Not YA

I didn't even know this was coming out, until my sister told me, so I grabbed it and read it. One of my favorite all time sci fi series.

I do have a quick question on the recommendation. Most of what I read is because I see someone here talking about it. So if I see someone recommend something on the what are you reading thread and pick it up because of that does it count? Or do I need to specifically ask for one?

message 111: by Christie (new)

Christie (cereale) Finished my 2nd. This Is Where It Ends by Marieke Nijkamp I'm counting it as a brand new release for January. It was released on 1/5 and I finished it today. Updated post #7.

Just finished Soulless (Parasol Protectorate, #1) by Gail Carriger ! This will be for my new genre category. This is actually my first steampunk novel and I was pleasantly surprised by it and really liked it! Very refreshing to read something different for once :D

I'm pretty flexible on this. Pretty much so long as it wasn't something you really had on your radar and it was suggested (to you or a group at large) by someone who has read it, then I say it counts!

Also, thanks for reminding me. I've really been meaning to get back into reading some more Bujold. I've definitely enjoyed the first of the Vorkosogan (probably spelled that horribly!) series and I hear that the second is REALLY good.

I'm pretty flexible on this. Pretty much so long as it wasn't something that was hugely on your radar and someone who read it suggested it (to you or to a group), then I say it counts! It's all about learning about something new as a direct result of someone else :)

message 116: by Gremlin (new)

Gremlin | 966 comments Completed my first one! I read this debut: We All Looked Up by Tommy Wallach

message 117: by Gremlin (new)

Gremlin | 966 comments Also, as a reminder to anyone hoping to get "January" checked off your list: find a book that came out this month (pub date of January 2016). So long as you start reading it in January (and finish, obviously, during this challenge) it'll count.

So you need to start reading it by this Sunday, at the latest :)

message 118: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberm867) Thanks for that last post Gremlin. I was literally coming here to ask if I had to finish it by the end of January for it to count.

I've already started and I think I'll finish it by the end of the month anyway, but needed to make sure. Thanks!!!

message 119: by Linda (new)

Linda I also finished Gentleman Jole and the Red Queen by Lois McMaster Bujold . I'm Barb's sister who let her know this came out earlier this month. It counts as my new January release, non YA. I have to say this was very different from all the other Vorkosigan books, but still a very enjoyable read.

I updated post #28

message 120: by Christie (new)

Christie (cereale) Finished my 3rd (can you tell I got snowed in this past weekend?) The Hired Girl by Laura Amy Schlitz . I am counting this one as a new author to me. I updated post #7.

Diane | 1234 comments I have a question about new genre. I have never read a graphic novel at all and was thinking of doing that for new genre but after thinking about it i realized it isn't actually genre it is new formatting. Would that count or not? ( I have another new genre one on the shelf I could use.)

Dang, Diane. That is an excellent question! I totally agree that a Graphic Novel is just a different format and yet... somehow it's more than that. And "comics and graphic novels" totally have their own BISAC category (BISAC is a list of subject codes used for books).

Let me ask for some opinions from the other mods and get back on this!

I'm also looking for recommendations. My tastes are similar to Kdbrand's. I looked at the Rephaim series but it doesn't seem to be at my library or available on Kindle. Any other recommendations?

Okay - We all pretty much agree that the whole point is to get folks reading something that's new to them - and Graphic Novels are clearly new to you. So we'd totally count it :)

Diane | 1234 comments Finished #3 Timebound (The Chronos Files, #1) by Rysa Walker debut author - this was her debut in a series that came out in 2014. From a previous comment I understand that as long as it is with in 5 years that should be OK but the next book has come out in this series so if it does not count as debut I will switch this to first in a new series.

Alright going from your TBR I have these for you:
Darkfever (Fever, #1) by Karen Marie Moning Because the first 5 in this series have a treasured place in many of our hearts.
The Magician's Lie by Greer Macallister This was an impulse buy of mine because it was an audible daily deal and I was very pleasantly surprised by it.
The Name of the Wind (The Kingkiller Chronicle, #1) by Patrick Rothfuss (Over 500 pages, but...) This book should be read because it is made of awesome, and because Elodin is awesome in his craziness that isn't really crazy but is, but isn't.
First Grave on the Right (Charley Davidson, #1) by Darynda Jones Love the snark these books have and the obsession with coffee...I can understand these things!
Succubus Blues (Georgina Kincaid, #1) by Richelle Mead Because Seth and his T-Shirt collection.
Fixing Delilah by Sarah Ockler I really like this woman's books. I have really enjoyed most of what I've read of hers.

Some that you didn't have on TBR that you may like:
Magic Bites (Kate Daniels, #1) by Ilona Andrews <--- Anything written by IA is really good.
The Summer I Became a Nerd by Leah Rae Miller Light and cute.
Vixen (Flappers, #1) by Jillian Larkin Roarin' 20's!
Storm Front (The Dresden Files, #1) by Jim Butcher Because I can't resist trying to lure more people to the Dresden Files.

Rae Quigley (raequigley) | 256 comments Just finished book #2 - In the Mind of Revenge (The Shamed, #1) by Liv Hadden

This was my "new genre" book because it is non-YA, and way out of my comfort zone.

Ps. If you're into dark, kind of twisted suspense (definitely an adult read) I really recommend this!

Original Post #12

laurel [the suspected bibliophile] (laurelthereader) Finished 5/6 The Wicked and the Just by J. Anderson Coats under debut author category.

Brandi (brandireynolds) | 247 comments Since I'm going at a fairly good clip, I've decided to add another book to my challenge in a category I haven't already chosen a book for. I added The Book of Ivy (The Book of Ivy, #1) by Amy Engel under Debut Author (I had not chosen a book to read in that category) for post #10.
