TBR Tackler Challenge

Have you noticed the longer you are active on Goodreads, the larger your “to-read” (TBR) shelf becomes?

How do you tackle it? In date order? Alphabetical? Or do you just ignore it and hope to get to the books “one day”?

Rules: For this challenge, you’ll use a randomiser* to randomly pick numbers. Use these corresponding numbers on your “to-read” shelf to challenge yourself to read those books.

❶ Step 1
Go to http://www.random.org/integers/ to get your random numbers. (Instructions under spoiler.)

1. Change the number in part 1 to the number of books you are choosing.
   In this example, I changed 100 to 2.

2. Change the second number (100) to the number of books on your “to read” shelf.
   In this example, I changed it to 187.

3. Click “Get Numbers.”
   



The next page will give you your random numbers:

❷ Step 2
Go to your “to-read” shelf and find the books that match your numbers on your shelf. They are your selected books! (Example continues under spoiler.)

In this example, the numbers given were 52 and 110 and book number 52 is “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.”



Note: You may need to "turn on" your position number on your shelf. To do this, go to your "to-read" shelf, click on "Settings" (top right) then make sure "position" is selected and "save"

*If you prefer not to use the randomiser, you may just choose random numbers yourself by rolling a dice, picking a number out of a hat, just choosing a number in your mind - up to you!!

Duration: Each book selected must be read within one month. So, if you chose 5 books in total, you have 5 months from the start of the challenge to finish.

Levels:

Headlock: Read 1-3 books.
Coathanger: Read 4-5 books.
Spear Tackle: Read 6 or more books.

BONUS: “No Suspension”: Give a Spear Tackle without a suspension! Read 6 or more books and find a buddy to read at least one of your books with you for this bonus.

Just wondering though, if the randomizer gives us a book in a series that's further on than I am (like say book 6 when I'm only ready to start book 2) can we just replace it with whichever the next book is in that series?

Yes, that is certainly what happens! The ones I got through the randomiser I probably wouldn't have touched for years. It will be interesting to see if I find a gem in there ;)

Tell me about it. GR has been a bad influence. I have seen so many books that I would love to read but such little time to get to. This is a brilliant idea!

Goodreads insistence that books be added to your "To Be Read" shelf in order to be sorted onto other shelves is a HUGE pet peeve of mine!

I currently have 1530 on my TBR shelf but 1298 of those are part of the 1001 Books To Read Before You Die import list.

I had been going through my TBR shelf in order by average rating from highest to lowest, but I think I like the randomizer, so I am in! I will probably do this multiple times as well.
