I'm just now catching up on a review of Dave Barry's new book, Best. State. Ever.: A Florida Man Defends His Homeland. Barry's books never fail to get a belly laugh out of me and this defense of his adopted home state is no exception. I really loved it. Here is my review.

Larry loves that book. I always said that if I ever wrote a book, I'd call it "A Florida Man," because the most whacked stuff happens here that for some reason doesn't seem to happen anywhere else.

This is a book every ought to read...powerful, disturbing, but we need to know. I am totally wrecked after reading it....

I've had that on my shelf for a few years now, Barbara. I'll have to get to it.
Just finished a 5***** domestic thriller.

I am currently reading The Black Ship by Carola Dunn, I love this series and as I have one new book by her still to be read it gives me an excuse to read the rest of the series lol :P
I finished The Twenty-Three
by Linwood Barclay. In this conclusion to the "Promise Falls" trilogy the upstate New York town has a huge catastrophe due to poisoned water and Detective Barry Duckworth has to solve a lot of crimes (some left over from previous books). For me this book was just okay. 3 stars.

Just finished #2 in Tony Parsons Max Wolfe series,
The Slaughter Man. Excellent read! https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Just finished
The Topless Widow of Herkimer Street by Jacob M. Appel, a wonderful collection of short stories. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
And next up is
Duplicity by Sibel Hodge
Sandy you will love it! I cant wait to read Untouchable
That is going to be a Christmas present to myself.
Yesterday I finished Pelican Road by Howard Bahr. This is an excellent story about trains, the men who work on them, and the dangers they face. Here is my review.
Today I will finish Don't Look Now and Other Stories, an excellent collection of stories by the incomparable Daphne du Maurier.
Last night I began an ARC of Earning the Rockies: American Ground and the Fate of Empire, in which geographer Robert D. Kaplan undertakes a cross-country journey laced with clear-eyed meditations that seek through his understanding geography to understand the social phenomena that have recently wracked our country. After the first chapter, I am definitely intrigued.
. I expect to finish off the year with a book that has sat on my shelf for fr too long, Defending Jacob. I look forward to discussing it with members of this group.
If you're looking for something a little less demanding than a full-length novel, I just devoured Chase: The Hunt for the Mute Poetess in one sitting. It's a rollicking, rapid read; a tangled trail of intellectual puzzles and a twisted treasure hunt to reveal a mysterious woman’s unknown origins...

Interesting. I just checked out another book by the same title. This Blood at the Root: A Racial Cleansing in America is a non-fiction book about a county that evicted all of its black residents and stayed entirely white for over eighty years.
I just watched the author, Patrick Phillips, talk about his book Blood at the Root: A Racial Cleansing in America on CSPAN. His interview is on their website. Booktv.org

I got an ARC of that book a long time ago but haven't read it yet. I did notice that I had two books with the same title.

I just finished Choke by Kaye George. It's a fun read, especially for fans of amateur sleuth/ cozy mysteries!
I finished The Whistler
by John Grisham.A whistle-blower accuses a Florida judge of serious corruption. The resulting investigation leads to a tragedy but lets the FBI take down some very bad criminals. The book is just okay for me. 3 stars.

Just starting
The Hanging Club by Tony Parsons after finishing
Duplicity by Sibel Hodge https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
After being sucked into the biography of Rasputin I've just finished, I finally managed to finish reading The Strangers in the House, by Georges Simenon. Very good book but I think I prefer his The Engagement. Both are character-, rather than plot-driven novels.

I thought this was a long drawn out book - not one of my favorites
I finished A Fatal Twist
by Tracy Weber.Amateur sleuth Kate Davidson - yoga teacher, doula, and 'mom' to a German Shepherd - looks into the murder of a skirt-chasing doctor. This is an enjoyable, humorous cozy mystery. 3 stars.

I'm about half way through Quietly in Their Sleep, an excellent Inspector Brunetti mystery by Donna Leon. It's an excellent series.
I recently finished Things We Lost in the Fire: Stories, by Mariana Enriquez -- excellent book by an author from Argentina and Alpine Ballad, by Vasil Bykau from Belarus.
Getting back once more into crime, I'm reading The Bone Readers, by Jacob Ross from Grenada.
Moving out into the world and reading works from other countries is beyond fascinating.

I really like Angela Marsons. Have just finished
Play Dead https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...and started the next in the series,
Blood Lines
I've finished Master and Commander, a nice book, with some exciting naval battles. There are also some boring moments, with many reflections from main characters, but a pleasurable story.
I've just read The Stranger. Definitely would recommend. Here's my review:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I have a tradition of reading a Donna Andrews cozy mystery every xmas so this year I'm reading Die Like an Eagle
and loving it!
I finished listening to Defending Jacob yesterday while wrapping the last of the presents. It was unique but it didn't quite work for me. Here is my review.
I finished The Orphan Master
by Jean Zimmerman. In this historical mystery, set in the 1660s, orphans are disappearing from the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam, and an intrepid young 'she-merchant' (female trader) is determined to find out what's happening. The best part of the book is the vivid depiction of New Amsterdam (the author is a historian).
Interesting book. 3.5 stars

I completed 3 very different crime novels this past week that are well-worth reading and covers a few countries for those doing the UN challenge.Claws of the Cat is set in 16th century Japan and involves the murder of a Samurai at one of the local brothels. It's well-written with no lack of suspects. I found it fascinating to read about the customs of Japan and will be continuing the series.
The other two books both fall within what is being termed Sunshine Noir - crime in sunny places. (This is a lovely collection of short stories in the genre Sunshine Noir).
The Second Death Of Goodluck Tinubu is set in northern Botswana where three international borders meet. The complex plot is intricately linked to the modern history of Zimbabwe with a sub-plot involving the distribution of drugs. Kubu is one of my favourite detectives as he has few personal issues - he loves his wife, dog, good food and wine and opera.
The last one was a brilliant surprise as I was trying to find an author with an "I' to complete an A-Z challenge and remembered this one on my Kindle. Devil Dealing is a fast paced police procedural set in Durban with a cast of well-developed characters. The body count is high as South Africa does not lend itself to cozy mysteries, but it's not particularly dark. If you can imagine Stuart MacBride in sub-tropical sunshine that's about it. It's the first in a quartet and they're an absolute bargain at $0.99 on Amazon.com.
