Katheryn Thompson (katherynt) Just finished Mind Whispers by Gerard Blay Mind Whispers, a light and fast-paced thriller which I would recommend to fellow crime-fiction readers. My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

A Fatal Grace is a great follow-on to the first Inspector Gamache. I do have to find the first Joe Hill and give him a try.

Barry's books never fail to get a belly laugh out of me and this defense of his adopted home state is no exception. I really loved it. Here is my review.

Larry loves that book. I always said that if I ever wrote a book, I'd call it "A Florida Man," because the most whacked stuff happens here that for some reason doesn't seem to happen anywhere else.

I'm listening to this now and while I enjoy the writing, the narrator is not a good marriage to the material here and is detracting a little from the enjoyment.

I think if I read another Joe Hill novel I will try NOS4A2

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 10022 comments I finished A Darker Domain A Darker Domain (Inspector Karen Pirie, #2) by Val McDermid by Val McDermid.

In this mystery DI Karen Pirie handles two cold cases: a coal miner who disappeared during the strike of 1984 and an heiress (and her baby) who were kidnapped over 20 years ago. Good mystery. 3.5 stars

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 10022 comments I finished The Twenty-Three The Twenty-Three (Promise Falls Trilogy, #3) by Linwood Barclay by Linwood Barclay.

In this conclusion to the "Promise Falls" trilogy the upstate New York town has a huge catastrophe due to poisoned water and Detective Barry Duckworth has to solve a lot of crimes (some left over from previous books). For me this book was just okay. 3 stars.

Pelican Road by Howard Bahr
Today I will finish Don't Look Now and Other Stories, an excellent collection of stories by the incomparable Daphne du Maurier.
Don't Look Now and Other Stories by Daphne du Maurier
Last night I began an ARC of Earning the Rockies: American Ground and the Fate of Empire, in which geographer Robert D. Kaplan undertakes a cross-country journey laced with clear-eyed meditations that seek through his understanding geography to understand the social phenomena that have recently wracked our country. After the first chapter, I am definitely intrigued.
Earning the Rockies American Ground and the Fate of Empire by Robert D. Kaplan .
I expect to finish off the year with a book that has sat on my shelf for fr too long, Defending Jacob. I look forward to discussing it with members of this group.

Rowena Hoseason | 90 comments If you're looking for something a little less demanding than a full-length novel, I just devoured Chase: The Hunt for the Mute Poetess in one sitting.
It's a rollicking, rapid read; a tangled trail of intellectual puzzles and a twisted treasure hunt to reveal a mysterious woman’s unknown origins...

My guess is that both come from the lyrics to the Billie Holiday song Strange Fruit.

After being sucked into the biography of Rasputin I've just finished, I finally managed to finish reading The Strangers in the House, by Georges Simenon. Very good book but I think I prefer his The Engagement. Both are character-, rather than plot-driven novels.

I recently finished Things We Lost in the Fire: Stories, by Mariana Enriquez -- excellent book by an author from Argentina and Alpine Ballad, by Vasil Bykau from Belarus.

Getting back once more into crime, I'm reading The Bone Readers, by Jacob Ross from Grenada.

Moving out into the world and reading works from other countries is beyond fascinating.

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 10022 comments I finished The Orphan Master The Orphan Master by Jean Zimmerman by Jean Zimmerman.

In this historical mystery, set in the 1660s, orphans are disappearing from the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam, and an intrepid young 'she-merchant' (female trader) is determined to find out what's happening. The best part of the book is the vivid depiction of New Amsterdam (the author is a historian).

message 1799: by Carolien (new)

Carolien (carolien_s) I completed 3 very different crime novels this past week that are well-worth reading and covers a few countries for those doing the UN challenge.

Claws of the Cat is set in 16th century Japan and involves the murder of a Samurai at one of the local brothels. It's well-written with no lack of suspects. I found it fascinating to read about the customs of Japan and will be continuing the series.

The other two books both fall within what is being termed Sunshine Noir - crime in sunny places. (This is a lovely collection of short stories in the genre Sunshine Noir).

The Second Death Of Goodluck Tinubu is set in northern Botswana where three international borders meet. The complex plot is intricately linked to the modern history of Zimbabwe with a sub-plot involving the distribution of drugs. Kubu is one of my favourite detectives as he has few personal issues - he loves his wife, dog, good food and wine and opera.

The last one was a brilliant surprise as I was trying to find an author with an "I' to complete an A-Z challenge and remembered this one on my Kindle. Devil Dealing is a fast paced police procedural set in Durban with a cast of well-developed characters. The body count is high as South Africa does not lend itself to cozy mysteries, but it's not particularly dark. If you can imagine Stuart MacBride in sub-tropical sunshine that's about it. It's the first in a quartet and they're an absolute bargain at $0.99 on Amazon.com.
