Finished with The Free State of Jones: Mississippi's Longest Civil War by Victoria E. Bynum, i gave 3 star on it. Now, already reading Julie and Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen: How One Girl Risked Her Marriage, Her Job, and Her Sanity to Master the Art of Living by Julie Powell. The story make me hungry all the time because the recipes seem delicious!
I am going to start
by
James Lee Burke. I had thought about taking a break from JLB but am thinking maybe I can read the entire Dave Robicheaux series before the end of the year.
Finished with Julie and Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen: How One Girl Risked Her Marriage, Her Job, and Her Sanity to Master the Art of Living. I gave 3.5 for it. Reading the book made me starving all the time, gosh! Now starting reading The Wrong Girl by David Hewson, so far i love it!
Finished book number two in my post-Narcos Pablo Escobar reading trilogy: News of a Kidnapping. It's nonfiction, but Gabriel Garcia Marquez was a journalist and does it beautifully. It's the story behind a series of kidnappings as told by the survivors and their families, and in one case, by the diary left behind by one of the victims.
Reading Saving Babe Ruth
, which I will put on hold for a bit because I had Linda Castillo's
Among the Wicked on hold at the library, and I just got it! Excited to get started. Also am about halfway through HN Wake's revision of her soon-to-be-released Serpents in the City
, which I am honored to beta read. Her Mac Ambrose series is so good, and this one is a political thriller.
I finished Star Trek Movie Memories
by William Shatner. This book, about the Star Trek movies, is a sequel to Shatner's book about the TV series. Good book, with interesting stories. Film-making is a very complex business....and this inside look - focusing on Star Trek - is quite informative. 4 stars.

I finished The Case of the Missing Servant by Tarquin Hall. Unfortunately I didn't love it. My review is here:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I've finished Career of Evil, third book of this series. I liked it, the mistery and dark stories of the various characters. Sometimes is too slow, but it's a good mistery. Now I'm reading Preacher, Volume 6: War in the Sun, another nice book in this series.

I just finished How Like an Angel by Margaret Millar. Another excellent mystery by Millar. She's definitely one of my favourite mystery writers.
I finished
Curse of the Spellmans by Lisa Lutz.Nosey private detective Izzy Spellman thinks her nice-looking new neighbor is up to no good....but discovering his secrets proves elusive. It's always fun to visit with the kooky Spellman clan. 3.5 stars.

I finished The Investigator by Margarita Khemlin. It's very likely the most literary crime novel I've ever read, set just after Stalin's death, with roots in the Holocaust. Thoughts coming soon.
I'm just beginning Tom Franklin's Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter and am really enjoying it. So far it has a very modern Southern Gothic feel.
Finished with The Wrong Girl by David Hewson. I like the characters, Vos's especially. It's not too thrilling for me, but the story made me curious, i can't put down my book. Now already start reading Suicide Forest by Jeremy Bates
I really liked The Glorious Heresies by Lisa McInerney. My review is here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I finished The Whole Art of Detection: Lost Mysteries of Sherlock Holmes
by Lyndsay Faye.In these 'new' Sherlock Holmes stories Lyndsay Faye wonderfully captures the language and spirit of the original tales. I'm a big Sherlock Holmes fan and I enjoyed every story in this book.
5 stars.

Just finished The Other Typist by Suzanne Rindell. Wish it would of had more of a twist. 3 starsNow reading Styx & Stone by James W. Ziskin. Getting ready to start Heartsick by Chelsea Cain
All 3 are new authors to me.
1/3 of the way through listening to
A Faint Cold Fear by Karin Slaughter, and just started both
Tell My Dad by Ram Muthiah and
Coulrophobia & Fata Morgana by Jacob M. Appel, after finishing Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
by J.K. Rowling https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I've finished Lady Killer a nice comics, for story and artwork.I'm reading Preacher, Volume 7: Salvation and Usher's Passing. The latter, for a group here on Goodreads, is a good surprise and I like very much.
I recently finished Dead Lemons from Finn Bell on my Kindle. it's a crime thriller - just superbly written and super scary and twisty. The storey, location (set in New Zealand), culture and history are seamlessly interwoven. I've got the next book, Pancake Money on my to read list ☺
Currently reading The Vegetarian by Han Kang. So far it's really good, and really dark. Has anyone else read it?

And really sad too.
Nancy wrote: "Currently reading The Vegetarian by Han Kang. So far it's really good, and really dark. Has anyone else read it?"Nancy I've read it. I thought it was thought-provoking and a bit weird (I didn't know quite what to make of it.) I gave it 3.5 stars.

I just started China Lake, the first Evan Delaney thriller by Meg Gardiner. Off to a fast, exciting start. I've also recently started The Bird's Nest by Shirley Jackson, which is very strange...
I finished Charcoal Joe
by Walter Mosley. In this 14th book in the series scary criminal Charcoal Joe wants P.I. Easy Rawlins to prove that a young black post-doc didn't murder two white men. Good characters but the plot is too complicated. 3 stars.

and after a weird start, I found it riveting.I then picked up
. Tempe is far from being the perfect heroin, but I keep coming back to her !
I finished The 7th Canon
by Robert Dugoni,Father Thomas Martin, who runs a shelter for homeless boys, is arrested when a youth is found murdered. He's defended by Peter Donley, a young lawyer who's just learning the ropes of criminal defense. Good book but not among Dugoni's best. 3 stars.

I just finished an ARC (It's an audiobook so maybe it should be ALC) of The Peculiar Miracles of Antoinette Martin by debut novelist Stephanie Knipper. This book surpassed all my expectations. I have often been disappointed by fictional portrayals of special needs children but Knipper, herself the mother of special needs children, brought her own experience and insights to the table when she wrote this touching story of broken people living at a flower farm in Kentucky. Here is my review.
I just finished The Pledge by Friedrich Dürrenmatt and it was a 5-star read. Today I started Raymond Chandler's The High Window. It's my first Chandler novel and I'm enjoying the completely different style from my typical reads.
I've just started listening to Darktown. Set in the late 1940s , it is based on the first black officers to serve on the Atlanta Police Department. The restrictions they had to work under were compounded by the total lack of respect and cooperation they received from their white counterparts. I can't imagine what it would be like to be a police officer who couldn't even count on his fellow officers to cover his back.
Reading The Uninvited, by Dorothy Macardle. Some day I'll get back to crime fiction. Just not right now.
My favourite books are thrillers, mysteries of all kinds.
But I am a film buff, and love the real legends of the 30's, 40's, 50's, 60's.
They were legends, and great to read autobiographies and biographies.
James Garner for me will always be remembered for his role in "The Great Escape", and then also in " Move Over Darling" and "The Americanisation of Emily".
Three of my favourites, and it seems three of James Garner's favourites.
This is a quick, light read, the book in a way tells you his character, private man, so there is no in depth secrets or gossip, yes he had strong opinions, a mad temper.
It shows his love of golf, his love of motor racing, which actually is not far off half the book, but less is discussed about the actors her worked with.
Throughout the book he mentions only a few actors he did not like, Charles Bronson being one, Steve McQueen, Lee Marvin, the ones he liked Marlon Brando, Henry Fonda, Julie Andrews, Doris Day, Charles Durning and others.
One quarter of the book is comments from friends and families and also his comments on all his films, and he scores his own films.
Liked and admired him as an actor, but a little too light hearted to make a great book.
Three stars from me
Nancy wrote: "Reading The Uninvited, by Dorothy Macardle. Some day I'll get back to crime fiction. Just not right now."Liked that one but was too scared to read it at home. I'd already seen the movie.
