Currently Reading? Just Finished? 2016
I am beyond honored to be reading a book by one of our very own group members, S.K. Rizzolo: On a Desert Shore. I'm not very far into it, but I'm liking it so far.

Just finished reading Sovereign, the third in the Shardlake series. Surprisingly a while ago I enjoyed a fantasy book, it was the first in a trilogy, so now I will be reading the second book. Hope everyone is enjoying what they are reading!
We think we know how buildings work. You pass through doors, look through windows, hang pictures on walls, walk on floors, and ignore ceilings (unless they leak).Burglars have different ideas. They ignore doors, pass through walls, hang pictures on windows, walk on ceilings, and cut through floors. They subvert the very notion of a building; theirs is an architectural crime.
That’s the thesis of Geoff Manaugh, author of A Burglar's Guide to the City —where architectural criticism collides with true-crime reporting. 3.5 stars rounded down to three.
Because I wrote this review for Criminal Element, I can't post it here. Read the full review here.

In general I prefer contemporary mysteries, but like to defect into other eras once in a while!

The political intrigue and religious tensions are represented well I think in the novels and I enjoy reading them.

Starting Emma Cline's The Girls. I hope it lives up to all of the hype I'm getting in my emails -- jeez!
My current reading list. I should finish 3 of them in the next day or so.. - Scar Tissue Movie Tie In by Michael Ignatieff, an exploration of a family's reactions to a parent's suffering of neurological illness
- Silesian Station by David Downing, 2nd story of his John Russell series, a spy story set in Germany just on the cusp of WWII
- Blind Date by Frances Fyfield, a mystery/ thriller as far as I can tell at this stage, and
- Petrella at Q by Michael Gilbert, a collection of short stories/ cases over the course of a year, featuring Chief Inspector Petrella and his team at London's Station Q

That's one of my absolute favorite Christie novels. Sadly, it's a book you can only read once.

I wouldn't agree it's a book you can only read once. It's a wonderfully constructed book, I certainly plan to read it again at some point in the future, just for the pure pleasure of it.
I'm about to finish The Girls. I know people are going crazy over it with lots of 5-star ratings, but well, I'm not one of them.
Books I've finished reading recently:Savage Highway
The Pure and the Hated
Naked Addiction
Have you read any of these?
I finished Live and Let Growl
by Laurien Berenson.Melanie Travis (and her poodle Faith) accompany Aunt Peg to a dog show in Kentucky, where Aunt Peg will judge. While they're there an old friend, Miss Ellie, has a fatal 'accident.' The cozy's not that much of a mystery but I enjoyed it and learned a lot about dog shows and Thoroughbred racehorses. 3.5 stars.

I finished My Girl
by Jack JordanChloe is a drunk/drug addict since the abduction and death of her daughter and suicide of her husband. Then Chloe finds a hidden gun in Ryan's office and becomes bewildered by the odd things that start to happen in her house. At this point things get really scary. The first part of the book is very good but I was disappointed with the second section.
2 stars.

I finished a crime novel Brighton by Michael Harvey. My review is here:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I'm about halfway through the fourth story in the Tai Randolph/Trey Seaver series: Deeper Than the Grave. Frankly, I am fairly disappointed and continuing on just out of a sense that perhaps it gets better, although I'm not holding out much hope. I've liked the story so far, but this one has very little reason for Tai to be so personally involved in nosing into matters that don't directly concern her. Based on the blurbs, the new book that just came out seems as though it will be more suspenseful, as usual.
Reading The Quiet Game by Greg Iles. This is the first in a series starring Penn Cage. As an introduction to a continuing character this is the worst, Penn is quite frankly a douche. I read book 3 before and I am glad because I really liked it and the character. If I read this first I don't think I would have continued. I have read other Iles books not in the series and they are really good.

Starting
by
Robert DugoniThis has been on my TBR shelf for a while now. I have seen good reviews on this as well as the two sequels.
I'm halfway through Never Saw it Coming by Linwood Barclay and enjoying very much. There has been a nice twist that surprised me and I'm looking forward to seeing where it goes from here. Just starting Helsinki Noir by James Thompson, a collection of short stories by Finnish mystery writers.
I finished Don't You Cry
by Mary Kubica. When Quinn returns home from a drunken night out in Chicago she finds that her roommate Esther has vanished. Meanwhile, a young woman who matches Esther's description has turned up in a suburb miles away. What's going on?
Lots of people really liked this book but for me the story moves too slowly and isn't very riveting.

I agree. I do enjoy the occasional Jack Reacher, when I want something fast and easy. Respect to Lee Child. But he's a one-note trumpeter, an excellent technician; Burke's an artist, a guy who's survived his own demons and channels that into his writing.

Thank you to Jason for offering a copy for me for an honest review.
FBI Agents John Knox and Beth White team up with Malik Sharif form Interpol to capture a killer who becomes known as the Jesus Assassin - an assassin who is taking out Muslim imams one at a time, leaving a gold cross as his calling card at each crime scene. To make matters more complicated, the federal agents are Christians, while the Interpol man is a Muslim. See them match wits and figure out how to work together as they follow clues that lead them to the assassin...only to find out that they are not the only people after him.
A well crafted, well written great paced action thriller, with a strong and powerful story, great characters good and bad.
From the start I was hooked knowing it was my type of book, with characters chasing each other , twists and turns, to the very few last pages of the book.
With all forms of police, Interpol, CIA and FBI all involved.
The author a police man himself and also a strong believer in Christianity, brings a book with no much swearing, bloody violence, or strong sex scenes.
Still a great thriller, number two will be bought shortly
a clear 4 stars.
I finished Silent Scream by Angela Marsons and so enjoyed it, now onto The girl with a clock for a heart by Peter Swanson and so far it's good
Just finished an unsatisfactory read -
Slaughter by John Lutz https://www.goodreads.com/review/show....Now reading a very engrossing Australian Crime Thriller,
A Time to Run: Constable Sammi Willis #1 by J.M. Peace
I've had Blind Date on my bookshelf for quite awhile now, and I've wanted to try Frances Fyfield just as long. This book was a bit of a slow burn. It took me awhile to get used to the characters; who was Joe, or John or Jack??? But I'm glad I took the time to get used to the story. It starts off with the violent murder of Elizabeth Kennedy's sister. You realize that something also happened to Elizabeth at a later date. Was it due to her drunkenness at the time or something else? It was interesting watching the plot develop, to get to understand the connections between the various characters and to gain an understanding of what actually happened. It builds so nicely, the tension increasing, the story clearing up and the ultimate, very satisfying, conclusion.
Discovering how and why everything happened was nicely presented. It was a true gem, this story. I grew to like Elizabeth and Joe very much. I even liked the very ending, how the letter that Elizabeth's mother is writing might possibly completely resolve the first murder. Give it a try. (4 stars)
Starting the first Grantchester mystery next, Sidney Chambers and the Shadow of Death by James Runcie

I enjoyed this series quite a bit. I also like her Harper Connelly series.
Just read the first three Crissa Stone books by Wallace Stroby in a row...different twist with a female criminal as the MC. Not bad for quick reads.Cold Shot to the Heart
Also read Great North Road by Peter Hamilton, which is a monster--over 1000 pages. Sci fi with a procedural mixed in, a first for me. Really compelling, even at that length.

This reminds me of a true crime book I read recently, The Innocent Man: Murder and Injustice in a Small Town by John Grisham. It's terrible when innocent people are railroaded.
