The Renko series is excellent.
I recently finished Dissolution, the first book in the Master Shardlake series. I now understand why everyone loves it. I just ordered the next three books in the series...I have no shame.
I just finished Steve Anderson's latest book, and as with all of his books, it was very good.Rain Down
I finished The Guest Room
by Chris Bohjalian. Richard Chapman has a bachelor party in his house for his brother. Strippers are hired, who turn out to be prostitutes controlled by Russian mobsters. Things go badly wrong, two men end up dead and Richard is in BIG trouble with his family and bosses. Good story. 4 stars.

Mistress of the Art of Death by Ariana Franklin. It's another very interesting historical mystery series.
I have just finished Jane steel by Lindsay Faye and wow what a book loved it and may have given me one late night read
I finished The Cat Who Dropped a Bombshell
by Lilian Jackson Braun. This used to be a good cozy series, but this book is a disappointment. Qwill is a newspaper columnist with two cats, one of whom helps solve mysteries. In this book though, Qwill mostly meanders around town and doesn't solve anything.
I gave it 3 stars because it was nice to visit with favorite characters. If you're familiar with the series, you might enjoy this book (a little bit).

I can't wait to start, Jim.
I finished Rivers, the debut novel of Michael Farris Smith first thing this morning only because I couldn't trust my drooping eyelids not to miss a word of the finale last night. What a great book! Imagine a world where Hurricane Katrina was just the beginning of an endless string of climatic catastrophes. This is the world Farris Smith has created for us. My review is here.

I finished The Theory of Death
by Faye Kellerman. Now working for the Greensbury PD in upstate New York, Detective Peter Decker, his wife Rina, and law student Tyler McAdams work together when the body of a college math student is found in the woods. Just a so-so addition to the long-running series.

He definitely seems popular. I've only read the intro so far.
I finished Rosemary's Baby by Ira Levin tonight. Basically the same as the movie, but still excellent, eerie, tense and well-written. Starting a thriller by Helen MacInnes, a new author for me, The Snare of the Hunter.

Speaking of Italy, I've just finished The Hotel of the Three Roses, by Augusto De Angelis. It's the Pushkin Vertigo edition, but it was originally published in 1936.
I just wrapped up Magic Study and purchased the next one in the series Fire Study. I expect that to be on the same level as the first two books!

It's a great series. I've been reading about one a year, just savouring the feel of Venice, the food and Brunetti's wonderful family and, of course, the wonderful Signoar Elletra.. of, and of course, the mysteries.

Vacation reads I haven't yet posted about:
Wax, by British author Ethel Lina White (who wrote The Lady Vanishes) - fun vintage crime with a wax museum as its central focus
Gilded Needles, by Michael McDowell. McDowell normally writes stories in the supernatural vein, but this one is pure crime and very, very dark. Highly recommended.
The Doll-Master and Other Tales of Terror, by Joyce Carol Oates. It's mostly psychological suspense dealing mainly with serial killers. I'm going to give this one away, so if anyone in the US wants my copy, just let me know.
The Murdered Banker and The Hotel of the Three Roses, by Augusto De Angelis. These books were written in the 30s and both are part of the series featuring police inspector DeVincenzi in Milan. Hotel of the Three Roses is pretty intense as old crime novels go, with several deaths taking place in a single hotel.
Vacation over, back to my books.

Hit a bit of a reading funk, so I'm going to try something a bit different. For the next month I'm just going to read Harlan Coben, starting with Tell No One. Hopefully I can get some books out of the house and kickstart my reading again.
I love Brunetti in Donna Leon's books. My problem is how short they are. Paying $25 for a book less than 300 pages long seems overpriced. Of course, the publisher knows fans will pay, but this fan is considering using the library and purchasing the paperback when it comes out. I have all her books. Someday I'm going to read them start to finish!
I'm on my third Rennie Airth mysteries. John Madden is a retired Scotland Yard detective who seems to get involved with cases anyway. In order: River of Darkness, The Blood-Dimmed Tide, The Dead of Winter, and more.

I've got The Lady Vanishes on my list of books to Find. I read a selection of Joyce Carol Oates short stories recently, also enjoyed very much.

I hit reading funks all of the time. There are days when I don't even want to see a book, much less read one. I think it happens to everyone at some point.

If I try several books and can't get "into" them, I know it's me not the books. So the stack of magazines gets my sit and relax time instead. I take too many, but love cooking mags and San Diego (area I live in for activities). Real Simple has fun stuff. Or Sunday crosswords. I do the Jumbo Soduko, takes me away as books do!
I just get really restless sometimes and can't settle on anything to read. I always have lots on the go and get frustrated if nothing takes my fancy. Happens quite regularly. Hoping this plan will get things going though.

I loved The Sympathizer. It was one of those books where after sitting there thinking about what I'd just read, just really blew me away.
