Hi Cynthia - I just wanted to double check something real quick. Would Judy Blume's Forever by okay to use for task 5.9 (Coming of Age)?
Candace wrote: "Hi Cynthia - I just wanted to double check something real quick. Would Judy Blume's Forever by okay to use for task 5.9 (Coming of Age)?"Not really I'm looking more for a book that shows a character growing from childhood to teen/adulthood that book is really just looking at a teen. Candace wrote: "Hi Cynthia - I just wanted to double check something real quick. Would Judy Blume's Forever by okay to use for task 5.9 (Coming of Age)?"You could read Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret by Judy Blume... It was cute!
Cynthia, would Extraordinary Adventures Of Ordinary Basil work for 10.7 (heroes)? It's a YA graphic novel (>100 pgs) with a description that suggests the boy fights evil and saves the world. I don't know much about it, but the cover caught my eye when I was picking up something else at the library. Thanks!

I asked this question in the Halloween Task Help thread, but to no avail: Will the word "haunted" work for this task? I'm considering Haunted Houses.

Thanks Sara! I'll try that one instead :)
Nicole wrote: "I asked this question in the Halloween Task Help thread, but to no avail: Will the word "haunted" work for this task? I'm considering Haunted Houses."Haunted is fine - it's an adjective that relates to Halloween.
I apologize if I missed a post already addressing this, but 14 pages is a lot to read through. My question involves this task:
1. ROSEANN'S TASK - Your Job/Dream Job Challenge - First Read A Book That Is Somehow Related To Your Current Profession (Students Count) AND Then Read A Book That Is Related To Either Your Current Or Childhood Dream Job. The Books Can Either Have A Character Or Setting That Relates To That Job.
Question: What if you are currently unemployed and probably will be so at least through the end of the year? I'll be going back to school in January if everything works out. Should I pick with my prior profession? Or are there some books out there about a character who is unemployed?
Kari wrote: "Question: What if you are currently unemployed and probably will be so at least through the end of the year? I'll be going back to school in January if everything works out. Should I pick with my prior profession? Or are there some books out there about a character who is unemployed? "I'm in the same boat. I believe Cynthia said either would work. I'm going to read Help Wanted, Desperately by Ariel Horn, I think. Except I just noticed that the reviews aren't so hot... under 3 stars, average? Hmmm.... I read a book about engineering two challenges ago, and thought I'd try something else... Engineers just aren't that exciting, believe it or not! ;) I suppose I could read a book of Dilbert comics.......
Other books about unemployed people:
*Tales Of A Drama Queen by Lee Nichols
*A Risk Worth Taking by Robin Pilcher
*Perfect Circle by Sean Stewart
*An Ex to Grind: A Novel by Jane Heller
*The Last Refuge by Chris Knopf
*Ain't No Valley: A Novel by Sharon Ewell Foster
*The Florabama Ladies' Auxiliary & Sewing Circle by Lois Battle
*Bitter is the New Black: Confessions of a Condescending, Egomaniacal, Self-Centered Smartass, Or, Why You Should Never Carry A Prada Bag to the Unemployment Office by Jen Lancaster
*Undead and Unemployed by MaryJanice Davidson (which is book 2 in the series... she loses her job at the beginning of book 1 (Undead and Unwed) though, so you could read the first one instead of the second.)
This is the most random list of books I've ever put together...
Sara ♥ wrote: "Kari wrote: "Question: What if you are currently unemployed and probably will be so at least through the end of the year? Sara ♥ wrote: "Kari wrote: "Question: What if you are currently unemployed and probably will be so at least through the end of the year? I'll be going back to school in January if everything works out. Should I p..."Thank you, Sara and Rita! I really appreciate the info. I'll see what the public library has as well. It would have taken me forever to figure out what books would fall under the unemployed genre. And since you both mention Bitter is the New Black, I'll see if I can find that one. I'd like to read something funny.
Though at second look, the Undead and Unwed book looks pretty good as I like this type of fantasy type story and looks like I can get it from the library too... Great list. Thanks again!
For 5.7- things you are thankful for, would a book about something happening that makes me thankful my family are safe and healthy be suitable? I am currently reading - While my sister sleeps by Barbara Delinsky and thinking what an awful situation they are in.

Kari wrote: "Though at second look, the Undead and Unwed book looks pretty good as I like this type of fantasy type story and looks like I can get it from the library too... Great list. Thanks again! "Undead and Unwed IS stereotypical chick-lit, just so you know. Don't expect a deep and thought-provoking read. It's a cute, but silly book about a material woman who gets turned into a vampire. I loved it, but it was definitely fluff-city!
This may be a stretch but I was wondering would pretties be considered sci-fi?Also under the halloween task would brewing work or is that a stretch also?
Julie (ID) wrote: "This may be a stretch but I was wondering would pretties be considered sci-fi?Also under the halloween task would brewing work or is that a stretch also?
" Pretties works but brewing not so much
Sara ♥ wrote: "Kari wrote: "Though at second look, the Undead and Unwed book looks pretty good as I like this type of fantasy type story and looks like I can get it from the library too... For the Coming of Age task would Bastard Out of Carolina by Dorothy Allison or Are You There God? It's me Margaret work?
Angela wrote: "For the Coming of Age task would Bastard Out of Carolina by Dorothy Allison or Are You There God? It's me Margaret work? "I think they both work. Bastard Out of Carolina is good, but hard to read at times (emotionally).
Angela wrote: "For the Coming of Age task would Bastard Out of Carolina by Dorothy Allison or Are You There God? It's me Margaret work? "Yes
Thanks El! And that Cynthia- I think I will go with Bastard out of Carolina since I read the other book, even though it was eons ago :)
I looked at all of the previous questions b/c i didn't want to ask a question that was already answered, but since I didn't find it: would Winnie-the-Pooh count for 10.3 since it is about a bear?
After seeing the question about Judy Blume's Forever from earlier about the coming of age, I'm wondering if the one I saw (on CD) Cut by Patricia McCormick work or not? If not, I'll try and figure out another place to work it in, because it really sounded like a good book. Thanks!edit: Would it fit better here? DIANE'S TASK - September Is Self-Improvement Month.
•Read A Nonfiction Self-Improvement Or Self-Help Book.
AND
• Read A Book In Which The Main Character Undergoes A Significant Positive Change In His Or Her Life As A Result Of Self-Improvement (Can Be Fiction Or Nonfiction).
And while I'm asking, for 5.6 challenge: Terrifying Titles - Read A Novel That Has An Adjective In The Title That Relates To Halloween...I.E. Spooky, Creepy, Crawly, Scary etc. would Darkly Dreaming Dexter be acceptable for this?
Kari wrote: "After seeing the question about Judy Blume's Forever from earlier about the coming of age, I'm wondering if the one I saw (on CD) Cut by Patricia McCormick work or not..."I loved this book... it is terribly sad, but it was one of my favorites when I was a teen. I would like to re-read it!!!
For Our Children Are Our Future, would The Mystery at the Dog Show (one of the Boxcar Children books) work? Also, for Terryfying Titles, would Book of Shadows work? 'Shadows' being the operative word.
Britta wrote: "For Our Children Are Our Future, would The Mystery at the Dog Show (one of the Boxcar Children books) work? Also, for Terryfying Titles, would Book of Shadows work? 'Sh..." No to both of those I'm afraid - children is part of the series title but not the title of the book itself, and shadows is not an adjective but a noun.
Jennifer wrote: "so, would it be ok to assume that Winnie the Pooh is allowed for 10.3, since nobody vetoed it?"The word bear needs to be a part of the title, so I'm not sure it would qualify as it also does not necessarily qualify as a children's book since it's a chapter book.
Sorry for asking so many questions on this...but here is another one. This question is for this task: 5. JANICE'S TASK - Fortune Telling Has Long Been A Halloween Tradition: Read A Book With "Fortune" Or "Prophecy" In The Title, OR That Features Fortune-Telling, Prophecy Or Prediction(s) As The Main Theme Or Has A Fortune Teller As A Main Character.
Can I use Charlie Bone and the Time Twister? The main character, Charlie Bone can hear voices in pictures. Or would it be better to use for the Time Traveling challenge instead?

Unless Charlie is actually making predictions based on what the voices are telling him, better that you use this one for the Time Travelling challenge.
Perhaps you could read Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, which involves the finding of the actual prophecy on which the series hinges, or The Celestine Prophecy, which has "prophecy" in the title, or something similar for 25.5.
Janice wrote: "Kari ♪ wrote: "Sorry for asking so many questions on this...but here is another one. This question is for this task: 5. JANICE'S TASK - Fortune Telling Has Long Been A Halloween Tradition: Read..."
His "gift" or endowment is to converse and "visit" people contained within photographs or paintings. This particular book is about a boy who travels back from 1916 via a marble to current day. So I'll go with time travel.
Thanks for the suggestion about Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. I've read it before (well, listened to it on CD--love Jim Dale narrating!). I'll have to see how time allows for re-reading, or I may try something new with The Celestine Prophecy. It sounds really interesting. However, I thought of another one and just posted my question over there. Thank you again :)
Okay, just because I like making sure!1.
I'm a student. Would Mort work? Or is being Death's Apprentice more of a job? ^___^
If it doesn't work, it's fine. Just another reason for me to re-read Harry Potter >w<
For the Superheroes Task, would Welcome to the Jungle work? Dresden is the hero of the series. He is a Mage and saves innocents from the forces of dark magic.
Tanja wrote: "For the Superheroes Task, would Welcome to the Jungle work? Dresden is the hero of the series. He is a Mage and saves innocents from the forces of dark magic."That's fine
For the collection of stories (10.3)- Are the Tales of Beddle the Bard Acceptable (111 pg?) They are quite modern, but still a collection of kids stories, right?
Matthew wrote: "For the collection of stories (10.3)- Are the Tales of Beddle the Bard Acceptable (111 pg?) They are quite modern, but still a collection of kids stories, right?"These are intended for an older audience than I'm looking for on this task so no that book will not work.

You might want to post this question on Roseann's Task Help thread. She's probably more likely to see it there. It's in the 'Task Help' section. Here's a link to the thread.

For the let's get physical task can I read Speed Addicts since it is about many Formula One drivers and the history of the sport and then watch a race? Or I could read The Grand Prix Saboteurs which is about the formula one drivers who were spies during WW2. Any direction would be appreciated...thanks!
