Oh dear. I will go now and look with trepidation at your review...
Leslie, Scaramouche just did absolutely nothing for me! I didn't appreciate the writing or the focus on action or the love affair or how the story was told. Nothing. Too cute. Too without depth. Nope, not for me at all. But, I don't mind having read it; I know at least now that this classic isn't for me.

It's been a few years since I read Annie Dillard, but I loved this book too. Have you read her collection of essays Pilgrim at Tinker Creek? That's my other favorite of hers.
Beth, several have told me that Pilgrim at Tinker Creek is excellent, but I cannot get a hold of it. Makes me annoyed...... For the Time Being is available, but few judge it to be as good. Have you read that one? I don't want to tarnish my view of the author with a mediocre choice. I absolutely loved An American Childhood.

I absolutely loved An American Childhood.I thought For the Time Being was interesting, but it is less personal than either An American Childhood or Pilgrim at Tinker Creek. It's less focused on the natural world and more on history/religious thought. It's also partly a travel narrative as Dillard visits the places she writes about. It's been years since I read the book (this was before I joined GoodReads) but there are bits of it I really like, even though it isn't my favorite of hers. My favorite quote from the book is probably this one:
“There were no formerly heroic times, and there was no formerly pure generation. There is no one here but us chickens, and so it has always been: A people busy and powerful, knowledgeable, ambivalent, important, fearful, and self-aware; a people who scheme, promote, deceive, and conquer; who pray for their loved ones, and long to flee misery and skip death. It is a weakening and discoloring idea, that rustic people knew God personally once upon a time-- or even knew selflessness or courage or literature-- but that it is too late for us. In fact, the absolute is available to everyone in every age. There never was a more holy age than ours, and never a less.”
Beth, the quote certainly gets me thinking.. Thank you for explaining the central focus of the book and your view of it.
