Part of this task is to give your opinion if the world would be better if events happened as the author describes them rather than as they actually did.

Yes, like someone answered before me, Jacob, who is one of the main characters, is a native American, and he and his people play a big part in Eclipse, and also in New Moon (don't know about the last book, since I haven't read it yet).

message 2056: by Cait (last edited Oct 12, 2009 08:14AM) (new)

Cait (caitertot) | 648 comments I completed my Task 25.8 (nouns). I read:
(person): The Book of Ralph A Novel - John McNally (10/11)
(place): Motherless Brooklyn - Jonathan Lethem (10/9)
(thing): No Time to Wave Goodbye A Novel - Jacquelyn Mitchard (9/13)

The Book of Ralph - 4 stars. I think I first heard of this book from 1001 Books for Every Mood A Bibliophile's Guide to Unwinding, Misbehaving, Forgiving, Celebrating, Commiserating. Great coming of age novel. Also, imagine my surprise when I opened up the book and found that it was signed by the author! That is the second time Better World Books has sent me a signed copy of a book (the first time was Elizabeth Berg's We Are All Welcome Here). Pretty cool.

Motherless Brooklyn - 4 stars. A mystery about a detective with Tourette's syndrome - what's not to love? I love Lethem's writing and look forward to reading more of his work.

No Time to Wave Goodbye - 2 stars. This has been one of the bigger disappointments of the challenge so far. I absolutely LOVED The Deep End of the Ocean and was so excited when I found out that, years later, she was doing a follow up novel. Yeah, I don't know why she even bothered. This book was short (barely over 200 pages), disjointed, and kind of silly to be honest. The Deep End of the Ocean felt very real. This book felt like a soap opera. I feel like she wasted a wonderful opportunity to bring this family's story to an appropriate conclusion. :o(

message 2061: by Emily (new)

Emily | 130 comments I completed the following tasks...

15.3 (Math - Addition and Division) by reading

Inkheart (Cornelia Funke and I have the same number of letters in our names) - I enjoyed this, but felt it was a little longer than necessary - I kept waiting for something drastic to happen that would legitimize the next few hundred pages.

Runaways, Vol. 6 Parental Guidance I had to skip ahead in this series to get to a 6th volume - I didn't worry too much since I had started reading this series in the future and then went back to the beginning though in reading this I did feel like I had missed a lot. I enjoyed the artwork in this volume especially in the opening story with the "artful dodgers" and the plot and character development were engaging and made me want to read more (which the other volumes had not accomplished as well).

5.9 (Coming of Age) by reading Uglies which I really enjoyed - very exciting at times, interesting characters and story, and some nice food for thought. It is definitely a youth book* - not super challenging, but that was what I needed this past weekend so it was a perfect fit. The one thing that I found a little annoying was the cliffhanger of an ending. I don't mind cliff hangers when there is no sequel - when I can make my own assumptions/guesses at what the future holds for the characters - but when there's a sequel, I don't get to make up the ending and am required (if I want to know) to read the next book. I probably will someday, but I think I can wait on this one.

Total Points: 350

* I do recognize that some youth books are just as challenging as adult books; no disrespect intended

I finished 25.4 book Candace's book/movie with
Coraline (2002) by Neil Gaiman and Henry Selick's 3-D animated film (2009).

I liked the book better. The addition of Wybie in the film undermined some of Coraline's strength. Coraline's inner dialogue was turned into conversations with Wybie and helped advance the plot, but Coraline lost some of her cleverness and her "I'm an explorer" persona when Wybie was there to assist her. The movie's visual effects were stunning, but the book had more soul.

Dark Horse The Surprise Election and Political Murder of President James A. Garfield by Kenneth D. Ackerman Dark Horse The Surprise Election and Political Murder of President James A. Garfield by Kenneth D. Ackerman.
Since Garfield was only in office for four months before he was shot (although he lingered for two months before dying), he did not have a chance to accomplish a lot. He did work at healing the deep split in the Republican party between James G. Blaine and Roscoe Conkling. His Secretary of the Treasury William Windom successfully refinanced the National Debt, and Secretary of State Blaine was attempting to build closer ties to Latin America at the time of Garfield's death. The most lasting work, however, was the creation of the Civil Service Reform Act during the following administration, which was brought about by Garfield's murder by a disgruntled office seeker.
The biggest personal blot on Garfield's record took place long before he became president. He had an affair, but his wife forgave him and as far as is known it never happened again.

3. Discover The Equation For Good Books (Math) - Pick 2 Of The Following...

• Addition - Add Up The Number Of Letters Found In Your First and Last Names Then Read A Book Written By An Author Whose Name Contains The Same Number Of Letters. Ex. For Me That Would Be 14 Letters So I Could Read A Book Written By Tracy Chevalier

12 Letters so I read King Dork by Frank Portman

• Division - Divide The Year You Were Born By Your Age (Round That Number To The Nearest Whole Number) And Then Read A Book That Is That Number In A Series.Ex. 1982/27 Is Equal To Approximately 73 Therefore I Would Need To Read A Book That Is The 3rd Or 7th In A Series.

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1332 comments I just finished reading Living Dead in Dallas book 2 in the Sookie Stackhouse books - ok so I did like it better than the first - the problem I had with the first was that it seemed as if Harris expected us to know everything about her version of vampires up front - it jumped in without enough backstory upfront. At least with this one I understood her concept of the vampire world (because each author interprets the myths/legends differently) up front and could get into the story. I wasn't sure I really wanted to read this series after the first one but everyone says they get better and this one was so I think I will keep reading. Although I was the same way with the Stephanie Plum series to - I read the first one thought it was just ok and then didn't read another one for awhile but loved the second one and every one since.

I think it would be awesome if our world was exciting as Westerfeld's? I mean can you imagine? Cross bred animals and highly advance war machines? ok so that doesn't sound so good but trust me it is amazing in the book. Plus I'm sure there are much more peaceful inventions in that alternate history, but the story takes place during World War I so of course there will be a lot of tanks and ships. It would also be cool to have seen what would have happen if the Archduke's children were legitimate heirs to the Austrian throne. I can't say the world would be better per say, as there will still be war and death but it would be ALOT more interesting for Europe and the world.
