WI 15-16 RwS Completed Tasks - Winter 15/16
10.9 - Realistic RatingsThe Devil and Miss Prym by Paulo Coelho
When a stranger arrives in the mountain village of Viscos (population 281), he starts a chain of events that makes the complacent villagers question everything they believe. To young barkeep Chantal Prym, he offers a bar of gold – but she has to steal it. To the rest of the village, enough gold to keep all of them in comfort for the rest of their lives – but they have to murder a resident of the village (any one, they get to pick) to have it. The results of these dilemmas form the rest of this short and heavily moral story.
I enjoyed it, but I expected more depth. Maybe it’s one of those books that will grow on me a while after I finish it, as it matures in my mind. Or maybe not.

You can claim combos when claiming 10.5 as the main task, but not as a combo with another task.

20.3 Toni MorrisonA Mercy by Toni Morrison
This is the third book I have read by Toni Morrison, ( all for RWS tasks, btw) and is probably the one I have enjoyed the most.
Covering the grand themes of slavery, race, religion and prejudice ( and prejudice comes in many shapes and forms in this - free versus slave, white versus black, the righteous versus the non-righteous, class ) the story jumps between the perspectives of various characters, all connected to the farm / home of Jacob Vaark.
None of the characters are more likable than the other, all have baggage they are carrying, though the only one who seems to be carrying baggage by choice is Vaark himself, who decides to build a grand house for no good reason that anyone can see.
The story feels very disjointed. Possibly because of the different perspectives and the varying language with each character, but it works within the text without being problematic.

I think the MPE may have changed, but this currently works for 10.2-Noel, as the title on the MPE does not include the sub-title, so +5 for you.

I think there is an addition error around here. In post 680, you claimed 520 points (I had 530) plus 40 points in this post would be more than the 525 you claim here. There is a bit of a discrepancy at the end, I hope you will accept my current total.

I show our scores diverging here. I can see an error here with 20 points claimed for a 10 point task. I will continue digging to see what else I can unearth, but there is certainly a discrepancy in our scores.

I was wondering about that one at the time, but whenever I clicked through it had the subtitle as well, and I typed in The Gap of Time as a search and it would come up that way.
However, you are the moderator, so I take you word as law ;)

I'm sure yours is correct because I don't use a spreadsheet and just add things myself, so don't spend too much time on it and just let me know the correction to make.
10.9 - Realistic RatingsIn the Beginning by Catherine Dunne
One morning, without warning, Rose's husband Ben tells her he is leaving her and their three children. Shattered, she has to pick together the pieces of her life and find a way to carry on, dealing with the children's grief and anger as well as her own. We see flashbacks over their marriage that reveal things were not as perfect as Rose may have been telling herself, all along.
This started out in a lovely, understated way, and I did enjoy it, but I was expecting something different at the end - more of a twist, maybe. There were hints of developments (at the bank, with old friend Martha) that fizzled out, while the ending became dramatic in a different way.
