Don't forget Q and A coming up soon with Tim Tigner.

Please do read his book Betrayal.

Thanks

Patricia Bergman (marshop) | 1229 comments Tim Tigner sounds interesting. I am a fan of his genre and have read most of Vince Flynn's books. How does he compare?

I have been anxious to ask if anyone has an opinion on the old Ed McBain books. I belonged to a reading group at our local library and many of the members were fans of his books. I found three of his paperbacks at a used book sale...Downtown - The Big Bad City - Mischief. I have't read them yet.

Tim Tigner, I gave his book Betrayal five stars, and this book was as good as a Vince Flynn book.

He was online yesterday answering questions.

Sadly only 3-4 questions last night, just about to check now.

Wind now getting bad and forecast for heavy rain tomorrow..

He texted me so I could look, and I was extremely surprised to see the Street View picture showed my Mom and Dad walking toward the door of the diner. I couldn't help but cry. Almost six months since my Dad passed.

Lynn Renee | 1707 comments Well I've never been afraid of technology but there are so many things out there that I've never used. I shut my cable and internet off so that I could save money towards a van, the cost was getting ridiculous anyway. I use internet more than watching TV anyway, so switched my cell to an unlimited plan for $40 more a month. Still saving $150 a month. 😃 Anyway, I have just set up my first hotspot lol, now I can use my Kindle again online. Even though my recently new cell is larger than my old one, my older eyes just can't read online for long on a cell. I get 17 television stations using an antenna, more than enough for me.

Amber Martingale I was so damn tired from travel to see my primary physician and get my lease done that when I got home from the other end of Belleville yesterday at 3 PM, I just had lunch and conked out tll nearly 7 PM. Library closes at 5 on Fridays and Saturdays. Went to opening night of Belleville Oktoberfest last night.

Haven't seen it THAT damn packed since the Beach Boys concert on closing night of the 2014 Oktoberfest! 2014 was Belleville's bicentennial birthday.

The Beach Boys played here for a downtown festival some years ago. It was so packed people were backed up for blocks. I didn't even try to get through, just went back home and opened my apartment windows. I probably had a better view of the concert than most of the people on the street.

message 9475: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale City Council was smart enough to install two big screens so everyone in the public square could see. I think everyone within a 3 mile radius of Belleville cold hear the concert and the singalong.

Melanie (meldoc) | 634 comments Hi everyone. I feel really silly, but I simply don't understand how to see all the reviews talked about in 2017 on Goodreads by Various . I followed instructions listed and created my exclusive shelf with only this book listed. Now what do I do? How do I post my reviews and see others? I'm sure I'm missing a simple step...but without explanation I'm never going to be able to figure it out.
Thanks

So, I have been quiet for a couple of weeks because a four legged someone has joined our family. We took on a rescue dog just a couple of weeks ago and he has most definitely turned our lived upside down. It's all a big learning curve for us as it's our very first experience with having a dog. His name is Kipling and he's an 11 month old crossbreed labrador. We don't know what the crossbreed is but he looks a lot like a lab. I'll try and get some pictures up.

Anyway folks, I welcome any advice and tips you can give me. I have read all sorts of things on the internet and much of it is very conflicting. Kipling likes to chew ..... a lot!! Will he grow out of this? We've bought him Kong toys and fill them with different foodstuffs, freeze them, which goes down well. We''ve also given him bones to chew. Great ....... for about 10 minutes then he buries it ..... and forgets where it is!!!

Also, I'd appreciate advice on what leashes you guys use because again there are so many different opinions. He's a strong dog and pulls and I'd rather he doesn't pull.

Like I said ...... all advice and tips very much welcome! I'm hoping I'll be able to get back to reading at some point!! Boy the mutt has taken up so much more effort. He's cute though!! :))

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 1127 comments Move house!!!! :~D

Seriously, move anything precious/expensive out of reach: TV remote, glasses, books, slippers. We used a spray that derived from grape seed (I think) that has a bitter taste, which we sprayed on skirting boards etc., eventually he stopped trying to chew them.

We've found this figure of 8 lead the best to reduce Dexter's pulling: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Dog-Field-Fi.... We combine it with a methos that has worked for us too, wherein every time he pulls out in front, we stop dead, and don't move on again until he relaxes the strain on the lead. Takes an age at first to get anywhere, but with persistence they do learn.

A fantastic book for learning recall: https://www.amazon.com/TOTAL-RECALL-P...

Great name, by the way :~)

Hehe! I considered moving house!! 😉 😀

Thanks for those tips. Will definitely look into the repellent spray because he has been at the skirting boards. He chews on anything he can get hold of and attempts to eat it! Grrrr! Daft dog 🐶

We're trying that method of stopping when he pulls and he does stop. Then starts up again and insists on sniffing his way round the park! He goes mental when he comes across other dogs. His social skills need improving.

Try a suitably sized harness so he doesn't choke himself while pulling.

Sandy | 188 comments Janet wrote: "So, I have been quiet for a couple of weeks because a four legged someone has joined our family. We took on a rescue dog just a couple of weeks ago and he has most definitely turned our lived upsid..."

there is an spca friendly leash ensemble that is a full harness and the leash buckles to the chest area. Try that - and when he pulls give it a yank and say heel. Immediately make him sit and when he does give him a treat.

There is also a leash that goes over the nose but I always had trouble getting that on the nose of the dog.

Also get yourself a spray bottle of water and if he does something you don't like give him a squirt with the water. It doesn't harm them just frightens them a bit.

Another trick I was told about is get a wooden gate about 6 inches high and knock it over a couple time near him. He will become leary of it and will not go anywhere near it even if he can step over it. This is a way to keep him in a room if you don't want him going into or out of a room for some reason. I made the mistake of using a child size gate and I can't step over it but the other size so long as the dog is not comfortable with it - he will refrain for stepping over it.

Lastly, I suggest you buy a cage. There is a lot of controversy on cages. I caged my dog early on to stop the chewing when we were not home - NOT TO BE USED AS A PUNISHMENT - but to keep the dog safe when we were out.

After the dog became used to it - I never closed the cage door but he felt safe when I left the house in the cage. He loved it - but ensure you get one big enough for him to fit comfortably when standing but not big enough for the dog to use as a bathroom at one end. They will not soil personal space unless it is too big. It helped with house training. If there are accidents - get something called odor mute - and soak the area down every time he has an accident. Once they go there - they tend to go there again - the odor mute has enzymes that take the smell totally away.

At 11 months he should be able to hold it all day but it depends on what the previous owner had them doing during the day. It might take some time. Less water during the day is also helpful but be sure to give them a lot when you get home.

Hope this helps...these have worked for me in most cases. I do now have a rescue that was punished in her cage and has never gotten used to the cage at all. A shame because it keeps them safe when you are not home. And your furniture safe too ;-)

message 9486: by David (new)

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 1127 comments We used to use a front fastening harness before using the figure of 8 nose lead. It worked well, but he runs free off the lead every day through trees and in the stream, so the nose lead is more convenient for us. We also use a large cage (never as a punishment) which he treats as his space and just goes in there for some time out.

Over the nose? Potential suffocation hazard.

message 9488: by Janet , Moderator (new)

Janet | 5303 comments Mod
Yeah, I don't think over the nose will work for him. He'll get it off. How do you get items off the dog that he shouldn't have. To him everything is a potential toy and when he has got something, he won't drop it or let go. Fighting him for it is not behaviour we want to endorse. What tricks do you use?

message 9489: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale Don't ask me, Janet. My dog was put down when she was 18 years years old because it was either that or let her starve to death from throat cancer and I still don't have a new dog. That was 14 years ago.

message 9490: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) My dog is 18 right now. I've never had a dog live this long!

message 9491: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale How big is your dog, Kirsten?

message 9492: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) She's around 40 lbs ... she's part Australian Shepherd, part Catahoula (aka the Louisiana Leopard Dog).

message 9493: by Janet , Moderator (new)

Janet | 5303 comments Mod
I was asking generally...... but wow...... 18!!!

message 9494: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Yeah, tell me about it!! She still insists on walking every day. Normally, we walk 1/2 mile but other days she decides on a 1 mile walk!! Just incredible. Her legs are giving out little by little, but she still insists on going out to smell the world.

message 9495: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale She's a medium sized dog, then. They typically have longer life spans than T-Rex size dogs like the Tibetan Mastiff, Kirsten.

My Buttercup was a Cockerpoo and at her heaviest she was about 22 pounds.

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 1127 comments Dexter gives things up when we ask now, Janet. But in the early days it was with bribes of food while saying give - give me that and you can have this. Give the treat and then follow up with lots of praise. We've had him from a pup so it was likely easier for us, but repetition should pay off.

message 9497: by Janet , Moderator (new)

Janet | 5303 comments Mod
Thanks, David. We do something similar, but I'll try the extra praise too and changing the wording. ☺

message 9498: by Sandy (new)

Sandy | 188 comments Yes - use the same word all the time - drop or leave and reward when he does. that is very important. it will take time and patience - just don't chase them for it or they think it is a game.
