Around the Year in 52 Books discussion

I am a newbie to the group--I put up my planning post and I am busily planning away with Evernote and bullet journal spreads. I know we are on the downward slope for this year, but I may try to see if I can pull out a few titles yet this year. :)

My favourite genres are literary and historical fiction, and non-fiction particularly relating to WW1. This year I have enjoyed some excellent reads from different places and cultures, and even a bit of sci-fi.

Good luck with your reading! Most people create a topic with their plan and some of us use spreadsheets, the trick is to find what works for you!

thanks

Hello everyone! My name is Selina and I'm from South Africa, originally from the Philippines. I've never done any year-long reading challenges (or any challenges at all other than Readathons, to be quite honest) so I'm really excited to try it out in the upcoming year.
After high school, I studied Industrial Psychology and after 2 1/2 years of that (I know! Such a waste!), I switched to Computer Science last year. And while both courses have their merits, the main thing I hated was that it didn't give me much time and motivation to read anything in the past 5 years. A few months ago, however, I miraculously made it out of my massive (and really horrible) reading slump and now I'm ready to read everything! I'm so excited to have rediscovered my love for it and I really wish it doesn't go away for that long again. *fingers crossed*

That is a cool idea! I picked half of my books already and lets be honest..most of them are popular/classic books. Maybe I should also just go with what I can find in the library.

I am not retired, but have been a nurse over 30 years, so you are not the only "older " person here. Welcome and enjoy your reading!!

Age is just a number, welcome! Also I think us youngsters would love a more grown up insight on the books we read here and I think hearing our newer ideas must also be interesting :)

Nice to meet you all!

Hi Anita, I'm in East TN as well. :) I wasn't aware of the Pop Sugar challenge. I'm going to have to check that one out.

Thanks! I thought I'd try it this way as I usually plan out in advance with other challenges...and then end up picking something else at least half the time. :)
Not to promote other groups or anything (haha) but which group is this? I'm doing a Stephen King just on my own so it would be great to get some motivation and discussion! :)

Haha :D
https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/... it is this group. We are reading all stephen King books chronologically, just started this month( december) with the first book Carrie :)

Hi Sarah! Nice to meet another Vol!

I’m another one who isn’t retired, but has been on the job over 30 years.younger or older, this is a good group...full of encouragement and a lot of book knowledge.

No one is old or young, please feel comfort we are all here having the same goal "Reading". Welcome to the group and I wish that we can achieve our goals by encouraging each other and helping if it needed. Thank you for being here!

I have a wide range of reading interests and it seems like I go through a different phase every few years.
We recently adopted two rescue pups so my reading time has become more limited in the last month, but hopefully this won't last too much longer.
I am looking forward to joining in on some challenges.

Shelley, that is an immense number of books. Feel free to check out the list of reject prompts. Some have taken them on as an extra challenge: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

In terms of favorite genres, I'll read pretty much anything. My faves over the years have been John Green books, The Raven Cycle, freakonomics, the book thief, handmaid's tale, captive prince, hamlet, great gatsby, scarlet letter, the giver, maximum ride, immortal life of henrietta lacks, etc.
My reading goal this year is 52 books, which was part of the appeal of this group. I also have a bit of a challenge of my own. I'm attempting to over the course of the next few years read every book talked about on John and Hank Green's channel, Vlogbrothers (I've reached march of 2007 and they've listed 50 books so far so we'll see if I can finish this in my lifetime). If anyone would like to join me in this let me know!
I look forward to meeting and talking to you guys!

My favorite genre is science fiction, but I also really enjoy fantasy, plays, and essay collections.
Can't wait to get to know all of you and talk about books!

Hey Sabrina😊. We have a few of the Same favorite books in common. I really NEED to read some John Green this year, lol. It seems I'm missing out. I have two on my list for 2018, The Fault in Our Stars and Turtles All the Way Down. I'm sure I'm going to enjoy them.
I need to check out that Vlog.....very curious ;-)

awesome! I unfortunately left my copy of turtles all the way down at school so I have to wait til winter break ends to read that :/

I'm Sarah. I am in Saskatchewan. I have been looking for a reading challenge group for a while. I used to read a lot then i had kids etc etc
I am going to try this out, fair warning: lots of my books will be YA. The school division has moved me up to middle years from early primary and I am completely out of the loop!
Being a teacher, there will be times when I read less and times when I catch up and get ahead (the SUMMER!)

My favorite genres are historical fiction and chick lit. I have a ton of books on my shelf and I'm hoping to whittle that down some.

My favorite genres are literary fiction, historical fiction, Southern fiction, and mysteries/thrillers.
I used to read a lot more before the Internet and cable TV came along. I hope to seriously limit time spent on those time-suckers and spend more time reading, listening to music, and painting in 2018.
So, with that, I'm going to post this, shut down, and start reading! I've got 6 more chapters to read before midnight Central time!!
