Just some ideas for you. Have you picked books out for your reading that are of true interest to you? Have you made a set time to just sit and read? Trying to juggle work, family and friends can be tough. There are so many wonderful books out there that sometimes I end up wasting the time I have trying to choose the best book. That's when I really get behind. Also, there are so many books I would love to read, but when I look at the page count, I know I'll have trouble making it happen. I am not the fastest reader, so I have to read books that are shorter in page count if I can. Some on my list are 700 pages and more! There is no way I could read that in a week!

Good luck to you. Just do your best and have some fun along the way. A book a week is a lot to expect out of ourselves...but I'm sure going to try!!

BookWyrm | 11 comments Hi,
I tried to post my reading list but got a notice saying I had to "verify my email" before I could post. But all I got in my email was a 'welcome' post from Goodreads in general; there wasn't any link for me to verify my email. I'm not sure what to do next.

Thanks!

message 403: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments BookWyrm, you probably missed a step when you started your account on Goodreads so you're not authorized to create a topic (I suppose it's to avoid spams). Follow the instructions there: https://www.goodreads.com/help/show/2...

message 404: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (girlvsbook) | 1173 comments Absolutely, Karishma! The more the merrier. Many people who join late use books they've already read to fill categories so they can catch up. It's never too late to start. It's all about having a good time and challenging yourself.

Thank you, Zaz! I told it to re-send the verification email (first one never arrived; I even checked my spam folder), so hopefully this one will show up. :)

Zaz, how long does it normally take for the verification email to arrive? Still nothing (and I did check the spam folder). :(

I'm using a gmail.com address. Could that be the problem? Have others with a gmail account reported this problem?

Thanks.

message 407: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments The email should arrive near immediately. I use gmail too for GR and no problem. Try again and if it doesn't work, contact the staff (https://www.goodreads.com/about/conta...) maybe they have a way to verify your account directly.

Okay, thank you. I clicked on the link again this morning and there's still nothing. :( Will try the contact link.

BookWyrm | 11 comments If you've got a book that first more than one category on the 2016 list, can you put it down for all relevant categories? Or should I pick one category and find other books for the other categories?

Not that I'm short of either time OR books ... :)

Also, I see as I scroll down what I think are the A-Z files ... will post my first book under there soon and hope I'm doing it right.

It's really up to you if you count a single book under multiple categories. Most members count them only under only one category and do 52 books but there have a few members who decide they can't do a book per week (for whatever reason) and choose to overlap the books.

Yes, you can post the book that you're currently reading under the A-Z section. That's really where the bulk of the discussion happens. Just remember to make sure that there isn't already a thread for the book and then follow the "Title, by Author" format. Also, books beginning with "A" and "The" go under the second word in the title rather than "A" or "T". I hope that helps!

message 412: by BookWyrm (new)

BookWyrm | 11 comments How do I check if a book is already under discussion? I posted a book and then added something under the 'L' file but apparently there's already a discussion going. Is it the 'Search books' field that I should look under?

Also, does that mean I can't use a book for my 2016 list if it's already under discussion (since I can't enter it into the A-Z folders)?

And finally ... how do I delete that post, in the 'L' folder?

Thanks.

message 413: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments It's the search bar on the right of the page, with "search discussion posts" (and then when you entered the title, you can show only the topic titles so it's easier to check).

You can of course use in your plan a book already posted, you just have to join the existing discussion if you want to discuss it with other members.

There's a "delete" link at the bottom right of your posts, you can use it to delete (not sure if it works for the full topic but usually the mods delete the 2nd topic when the person joined the existing discussion).

message 414: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments It does delete the full topic Zaz. :) I've done it before, but I think it only works on the website, not from the app.

message 415: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) I'm sorry if you've answered this already. I just discovered this challenge and thought I'd try. When it comes to top rated books, how do we figure that out? I mean, I know how to sort by ratings, but some books have only 1 reviewer and then there are books like the Harry Potter series with 1M. What do you think is a good minimum amount of reviews to qualify for this one is?

message 416: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments We fixed the rule at 50 ratings at least, but feel free to choose the 1st high rated book on your TBR you're interested in :)

message 417: by Pauline (new)

Pauline C | 68 comments Hi .. Wonder if someone can help me please? I have just started reading Conspiracy by S J Parris, and want to add a discussion topic under "C". However I haven't been able to, as when I place my cursor in the "This topic is about" field and type in "Conspiracy" or even "Conspiracy, by S J Parris" (both without the quotation marks) it cannot find the book ... So I cannot create the topic as it is a mandatory field. This book is listed on Goodreads, although if I try to "add book/author" as above it appears on page 18 of the returned hits! Quite bizarre really as it is a one word title, newly published book by a well known author, and is the top hit for the word on UK Amazon @ #174 in the Amazon UK best seller list. I googled and notice it is not nearly as popular in the US and is not yet available for Kindle your side of the pond, but I don't understand why the topic creator can't find it?
Any help/suggestions welcome!

message 418: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) How about " conspiracy parris ". I try to just use keywords.

message 419: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments Same as Kirsten, I usually type the title + author's name. Another easy way is too copy/paste the ISBN from the book page on Goodreads and it will find the corresponding edition (it's the ASIN if it's the kindle edition).

The mods check every topic created, so if the book isn't linked we add it ;)

Celia (cinbread19) | 354 comments Is there a place to suggest topics for 2017? I just found a website, librivox.org. You can listen to books there for Free. I'd like to suggest it for a clue.

Right now, voting is happening for the first mini-poll here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

I'll be creating a topic for the next round of suggestions on Saturday, June 11. They will likely move fast but there will be 11 more polls after that one :)

I'm new to this challenge in 2016, so appreciate the TLC. I voted in mini poll 1 and look forward to submitting my suggestion in round 2.

message 423: by Denise (new)

Denise I just joined today and I'm filling in books I've read earlier in the year. Somewhere I saw mention of Wild Cards to use if you can't find a book you want to read in a certain topic.

Where do I find the Wild Card or explanation of what that is?

Thank you!

message 424: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments There's a wild card if you want to skip a category you're not interested in. You just have to read whatever book you want for this number, without looking at the associated category.

Laura | 3780 comments Mod
Hi Denise, welcome to the group!

There are a number of weeks that we purposely left a little more open just so that people who only fit in 52 books in the year can have a little freedom here and there.

These are:
13. Reader's Choice
39. A previous suggestion that didn't make the list (found here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...)

In addition to those, there's also one wild card. The intent is that you use another one of the previous suggestions in order to fill the wild card but in the end, there's so many suggestions that you could essentially read whatever book you want and fit it in somewhere. Unless you choose to pick a harder suggestion to challenge yourself.

If you're interested, there is a conversation going in the off topic section about the wild card: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

I hope that helps!

I'm having the same problem with my widget as well. It updated the first 17 books then just stopped. I didn't change anything, but I wondered if it had something to do with the new site. I'm not sure what to do to fix it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

message 429: by Denise (new)

Denise I had trouble with the widget, too. I went back to My Books and checked the books that I had tagged 52books but were not showing up in the count on the site. I had inadvertently put a different edition in because I was in a hurry so it made a Date Added eg. June 10 2016 so when I tried to put in that I read it June 5 2016 of course it would not keep that date (date read earlier than date added) so I had to shuffle around to get the correct edition, etc. I don't understand at all how a couple of the books I was using the correct edition with changed the Date Added but it's too much for my tired mind. I just made up dates so it would work.

Laura, thanks for responding.

I participated in the first poll, then lost track of the date (June was a hectic whirlwind) and the poll thread. I seriously can't believe I missed Polls 2-4!

Anyway, because of your posts I found my way back to the thread and hope to participate in #5+ soonest.

Hope that brightens the day for both of you ;))

Pamila wrote: "Some books I read are not for the 52 books in a year challenge. They show up though on my reading challenge profile. How can I edit to move them to another shelf? Thank you"

You have to create a shelf just for the group:
- 'My Books' at top of page
- 'add shelf' on the left
- Type the name of the shelf and click 'add' (something like around the year 2016)
- Copy the shelf name (with hyphens)
- Go to the group's homepage and click 'edit my entry' on the challenge
- Enter goal number and paste the shelf name

Now when you read books, be sure to add them to the group shelf.

I hope that answered your question!

message 446: by Aglaea (new)

Aglaea | 369 comments A few pages back, there was a discussion on audiobooks. It just occurred to me that I've been completely silly in thinking it's a bit of 'cheating' somehow. If a visually impaired person, who uses screen readers and what not, might listen to a book rather than visually read it, I'd never think of saying to them that their way of reading is cheating, so why on earth apply some odd 'standards' to myself? I'm shaking my head at myself...

message 447: by Laura, Celestial Sphere Mod (new)

Laura | 3780 comments Mod
Elizabeth, yes that's correct.

Aglaea, I do feel bad when I count audiobooks just because I don't think I follow them nearly as well. But I don't care if others count them since they're probably just better able to comprehend stuff in that way.

That's a good point, I've never thought of it that way. Like you, I originally thought of audiobooks as "cheating" in a sense because for me, they don't keep my attention the same way as reading from a page does. I'm kind of kicking myself for it now, especially because I work with young adults with disabilities and a huge part of my daily work is making things more accessible for them. I would never think that listening to a book for them, or for someone with a visual impairment, isn't "real" reading.

Thinks for answering my question, going to go copy them in my challenge notebook right now.

message 450: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments Plus, audiobooks take WAY longer to listen to than if you were to read them.
