It is a book by an author that you have never read before, but feel that you should have.
I think it naturally lends to classic authors but really just any author. Stephen King is one of those popular authors that it seems everyone has read so maybe if you haven't read his books then you would feel you should have. Or maybe Jane Austen or Neil Gaiman. It also may depend on your favorite genre and what you feel like other fans would expect you to have read.

Ah, that may be a challenge for me...I've read at least one book from many of the classic/popular authors. Neil Gaiman is a possibility.
That is the way I also interpreted it. For me, it was Rainbow Rowell. She has multiple books on the best seller list consistently. Everyone seems to have read her stuff. I have yet to read any of her books. I recently read My True Love Gave to Me: Twelve Holiday Stories which included a short story by her. It did not impress me much, the story, so I'm hoping that is not an indication of what a full novel by her would be like.
I am an English professor who teaches composition and World Literature, so I "should" have read everything. This category is a chance for me to cross one off the list :-)
33. The 16th book on your TBR: can it be any of your TBRs here on goodreads or does it mean the main one that Goodreads set up for you
That's up to you, Elizabeth. I'm using my main GoodReads one but I randomized the titles and picked the 16th book from the random list.
So I'm trying to post one of my books in the A-Z folders and some ofthe letters are missing! One of the books I'm reading in January starts with an R but that folder isn't available.
If you click "new" at the top of the homepage in order to create a new topic, the drop down menu contains all the letters.
You're just the first one using that letter so it hasn't shown up on the homepage yet :)

What does "TBR" mean? I've been searching through the group and I've probably just misses it. Thanks!
Errrrm.... I'm having trouble with the dedicated shelf situation/tracking your progress. In "track your progress" it says "How to: Create a dedicated shelf in your profile, copy-paste its name in the "challenge box" and add your books to this shelf!"
*whispers* what the heck is the challenge box?? Halp!
On our reading list, Week 13 says Reader's Choice. As both words are capitalized, I am wondering if it is our choice with no holds barred, or if the book must come from Goodread's Reader's Choice list? Probably a dumb question, but I am confused.
Just to satisfy my own curiosity: will everyone read their books in order or skip around to what suits their fancy? I really would love to pick and choose as I go, but I'm wondering what everyone is doing. Thanks for your responses.
Last year I found the challenge in June and so I took the books I had read and put them into categories, then filled in the rest, so I jumped all over the place. It was fun. This year I am going to begin by trying to read the categories in order, but I may abandon it and go back to jumping around if I start to lose momentum. I say do what you want and HAVE FUN!
Stacey, I'm going to be all over the place, lol :)
I'm jumping around, as some bookclub books may fit into categories and I don't know what they are yet. I agree the most important thing is to have fun and not feel pressured or guilty about doing what suits you.
Alright I don't think I can handle 52 books so I randomly picked 20 numbers out of thin air and will be doing those weeks in that order. Anyone else making a smaller goal ? I feel like an underachiever for doing it this way but I'm due with my second baby in July and I can't imagine continuing to read thru my sleep deprivation. So I guess I'm just doing a 6 month challenge of 20 books. I'm not a quick reader by any means. Someone make me feel better lol
Hi Jill - I was talking to a friend who is a very busy mum of three. She said she would love to do the challenge, but doesn't have the time. I suggested that instead of treating it as an annual challenge, she could maybe complete it over 5 years? Not everyone has time to dedicate to one book a week, so as long as you're enjoying finding and reading a different range of books to meet the challenge, that is completely fine, in my view at least. The beauty of the challenge is that it encourages you consider books from genres that you wouldn't normally consider. That's awesome.
Discussions should be in Off Topic, this is the thread to help people, not to discuss ;)Stacey > There's a poll for it:

Feel free to start a new topic in Off Topic if none already exists about the subject.
Jill > read how much you can! No problem in not finishing or selecting some categories if you're very busy or a slow reader.
I'm not a fan of "doing the challenge over years" because we probably do a new one next year, and it's more fun to participate to the current challenge than to complete one all by yourself. Otherwise, I totally agree with Angela :)
Valerie > As said in the Suggestions Thread (if I remember well), you can read whatever you wish. The 2015 challenge didn't authorize "free reads" and at some point, it was difficult for people, so there's a category for reading whatever you want!
No problem, I'm just doing the big-bad-eyes so we won't have 200 posts to read, searching questions which are not there :D (we don't read the discussion topics with the same intensity or rapidity). And, of course, your answer to Jill is totally right here.
Thank you for the clarification, Zaz. It was because of the capital on choice that I that it was some sort of formal category.
Stacey wrote: "Sorry - I messed up again. *hits head with can of V8*"But, but, I need haaalp now. What is V8? *snicker*
And BadKitti, I've talked totally bonkers stuff already, so if you feel like ever doing so, you have company.
Hi Kristin! I would imagine that the order in which you read the books would depend on the series. I am planning to read The Slow Regard of Silent Things by Patrick Rothfuss. It is a side story about one of the characters in The Kingkiller Chronicles. In the prologue, Rothfuss actually says that if you haven't read any of the other books, this one will not make sense.
I would say the Hobbit is its own thing, as it was written first and quite separately, but it is related, so if you choose to count it, have at it. It is your challenge!
Yes, there are several Harry Potter supplements/side stories that I would count for this category.
The most important thing - have fun!
I really, really dislike the "0.5/betweenie" novel. Several times I combed Goodreads and Amazon for an appealing book and nothing but cheesy novels shows up. I chose something for now, but I'm not happy with it and don't want to waste my time reading poorly written, eye-rolling crap. Life's way too short.
I believe we get a "wildcard" to use; here's where I'll put mine to good use!
Stacey, absolutely! You do get a wild card so feel free to use it there if this one is not your favorite task.As always, it's about challenging yourself and having fun. That means different things for different members and we're not here to judge or dismiss anyone's book selections. If you can make a case for The Hobbit, Kristin, and I see no reason why you couldn't, then I say count it.
Jody wrote: "I've seen The Hobbit classed at LotR 0.5, so why not? :)"It is official, we the people have said it. All jokes aside, I do view it as a prequel aka 0.5 of LotR.
This may be the wrong place to post this, but if anyone has read Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi, would you say it counts as a political memoir? I don't know much about it except that it's about Iran, but it looks pretty good
Rachel, I just read it. It's a small slice of the politics of that time and although it's written from the author's perspective - as a child through her young teens - I wouldn't classify it as a political memoir, per se. It's a comic book, somewhat of a parody and yes, it does contain historical facts. But it also omits a lot, too. For instance, Satrapi never mentions the word "ayatollah", nor talks about who was directly responsible for the countercultural revolution. Many may differ, but for me, it was more of a young girl's coming of age story, heavily saturated in the political climate of the time.
I am currently not sure what I want to read for week 2. Last year I would pull up the thread for a particular week so that I could then see what others were reading and perhaps choose a book based on those listed. Is there anyway besides looking as someones full plan to see what is being read for each week?
Samantha, I think we will have the 'meta information' only when the week in question begins. I'm new as per this challenge (wasn't around in 2015) and so I may have misunderstood the weekly topics.
Samantha, some of the week 2 books are already on the bookshelf of the group:https://www.goodreads.com/group/books...
Others will be listed in the Progress Posts, but with many members not reading in order, they'll be posted there during all the year.
Thank you so much for the responses! Zaz, the link you sent is perfect; I had not figured out how to see the books in that view but understand now :)
We didn't really use the shelves in 2015, so I'm learning too to use them. It will be interesting to see the ratings and reviews for the books all along the year :)
Thank you for the link Zazz, like Samantha I would look at what others were reading for that week if I was stuck for a book to read. It looks like quite a bit of work to sort through and post all of those books into the appropriate shelves. Thank you to all of the moderators for taking so much time to do this.
Zaz wrote: "We didn't really use the shelves in 2015, so I'm learning too to use them. I don't mind doing it but I don't want to step on anyone's toes or mess it up.
It's perfectly fine if you add it yourself :) Just type the name of the book in the search bar of the bookshelf, click 'add to group', and check the appropriate shelf. Include both the general "around the year" shelf and the week you're reading it for. Then mark it as "read".
If the book has already been added then just "edit" to make sure your week is included.
No worries if it's too much/too confusing for anyone. I can add them also :)
