Ed Lehman | 1783 comments For week #42...is there a link I missed somehow to the top 100 fantasy novels?

message 355: by Nicole (new)

Nicole | 0 comments They linked to it in the suggestions (in the mod corner): https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

The list intended was this one: http://www.npr.org/2011/08/11/1390858...

Amy (thenikitagirl) | 244 comments Hi Mods, or anyone who might know...

Do you know why when I updated my 2016 Plan, it didn't register as an update?

I asked another member before posting here, but we couldn't quite figure out why...was just curious.

It was updated as I made it, but didn't register as updated in the 2016 Plans list.

Hope it's not a bother. I know it's a trivial question.

Thank you!

message 358: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments When you edit, it doesn't show as an update. You need to add a new post in a thread to highlight it.

message 359: by Amy (new)

Amy (thenikitagirl) | 244 comments Ahhh...that's actually what I thought it might be...I was even going to post in my thread below it to see...

Thank you, Zaz :)

Elizabeth | -19 comments question :since I used my wild card for number 36: do I post my wild card book there ,or under the topic wild card.

message 361: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments On the Progress Post for #36, saying you're wild carding and what you'll read instead ;)

ok thinks for answering my question

message 363: by Amy (new)

Amy (thenikitagirl) | 244 comments Does it often happen that one can't find the appropriate edition with the correct amount of pages? This has happened to me twice now. Not a big deal. I was just wondering if it happened to others often?

message 364: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (girlvsbook) | 1173 comments Hmm, I'm probably not the best person to answer that. I frequently pick the edition that goes on my virtual shelf based on the cover I like best. ;)

message 365: by Peter (new)

Peter | -28 comments I've had it happen a few times. Some books don't have all of the editions loaded. I tend to pick the edition that is closest in page count to the one I have, or another one with the same cover (which usually ends up being a similar page count anyways).

What I find even more frustrating is when I type in the ISBN number on the back of my book and pull up the information for it and Goodreads has incorrect information for the page count or cover art.

message 366: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments For the cover, editors can re-use a same ISBN for several editions, so it's not the wrong cover, it's an alternate edition. You can ask to the Goodreads librarians to add it to the database.

For the page number, it's often based on Worldcat or Amazon and the data comes from publishers who don't really care about the correct number (extra are not counted on GR, it also can add to the confusion).

Overall, if your ISBN is not already there, you just have to click on the link "add another edition" on the book page to add the one you have ;)

message 367: by Laura, Celestial Sphere Mod (new)

Laura | 3780 comments Mod
I have trouble with that since I read a lot of Kindle editions and I've learned they don't add up most of the time. The only time it really affects me is when try to update my progress. So I go by the percent on my Kindle and just multiple it by GR's page count to get the correct progress.

message 368: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments Laura, there are percents on Goodreads for the updates :p
Just click on the word "page" when you're updating your status. I use the pages format only with paper books.

Always thankful to you, Zaz! :)

message 371: by °~Amy~° (new)

°~Amy~° (amybooksit) I have a question about week 52 where we read a short story by a popular author. The story I read was one included in a book with many other short stories by popular authors. The individual story is no listed on Goodreads, and shouldn't be by all rights. I also don't want to read the entire book yet. So on my tracker it shows one less 'book' than I have actually read. It will always say that I have read 51 of the 52 books I meant to read for this challenge. What do I do? I know it's silly but it's bugging me! lol

message 372: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments You can change the total number to 51. I didn't count the fairytale week on my side, because I read tales which are not on GR.

message 373: by °~Amy~° (new)

°~Amy~° (amybooksit) But but but....my OCD! :-P

For the fairytale one I actually am reading an entire book of African Folktales but you are right, that one too could cause issues with tracking. I may just have to finish the rest of these short stories so I can log the book. I am over halfway done anyway; not sure why I keep putting it off. Finish it and "problem" solved I guess. :-)

message 374: by Laura, Celestial Sphere Mod (new)

Laura | 3780 comments Mod
The only thing I can think of is to log the book and then put a review saying what you actually read. I've come across those reviews in a few of the Stephen King collections. I can totally get the frustration though :P

message 375: by °~Amy~° (new)

°~Amy~° (amybooksit) I thought about that too Laura. I have read approximately half the book already so it wouldn't be completely unreasonable to do that. :-)

message 376: by J (new)

J Austill | 1116 comments I always complete a collection for my short stories (eventually). ;)

Rebecca | 168 comments I have a question.
When leaving a comment on a thread, how do you make the type bold?
Thank you!

message 378: by Michelle (last edited Mar 30, 2016 10:04PM) (new)

Michelle (girlvsbook) | 1173 comments Rebecca,

You can use HTML tags. If you click the (some html is ok) above the comment box it will show you all the things you can do.

For bold you type < b > Bold Text Here < / b >. Minus the spaces.

message 381: by SweatyNerdie (new)

SweatyNerdie Hi. I just joined this group. It's fantastic & there are lots of discussions on so many books! I searched for a common thread along the lines of "What are you reading now?" or "Which book did you just finish?", but I couldn't find any. Is there a thread like that? If not, could you consider making one?

message 382: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments Hi, welcome :)

No we don't have this kind of thread, probably because people are already doing check in with the progress posts (which are "I'm currently reading/I just read"), the discussion threads and their plans! For me, it seems redundant to add another check in topic.
As you just joined, wait a little to see if you still find it necessary. If yes, feel free to create a new topic for it in "Off topic" :)

message 383: by SweatyNerdie (new)

SweatyNerdie Alright, thanks! :)

message 384: by [deleted user] (new)

I have named my bookshelf "around-the-world-in-52-books" and it is still not updating them. Also, I added an April 2016 as date read and on the profile page it still won't update. Can someone please let me know what I need to do to correct it? I appreciate it.

message 385: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments Pamila, what you did seem fine as I can see your books. Maybe it's a problem with GR cache, wait a few days more to see if the challenge updates.

message 386: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments This might seem like a really stupid question, but Pamila, did you enter your shelf's name on the first page of the group challenge?

message 387: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks, Zaz. I will try waiting.

message 388: by [deleted user] (new)

Sophie...sorry to be so lame, but how do I get to that screen?

message 389: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments On the top of the text of this page, there is the green image and the title of the group, click on the image and you'll go to the main page of the group. Scroll down a bit and there is the "challenge" section (before the discussion boards) where you can enter the name of your shelf.

message 390: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments Oh, I just thought of something! Are you on the app? Maybe it only works on the browser (some options are absent from the app).

message 391: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments Sophie, she's already on the challenge list with the right shelf and books listed ;)

message 392: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments Ok, that's why it's was a stupid question haha

message 393: by [deleted user] (new)

Sorry to be such a pain. Sophie, I went to the top of this page and clicked on the image and was directed to the page you mentioned. I entered the name ...around-the-world-in-52-weeks and nothing happens.

I may be on the challenge list with the right shelf, as Zaz mentioned, but it doesn't show up for me on my profile...yet.

Thanks for helping and I'll keep checking.

message 394: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments Hi everyone! I just discovered something amazing and wanted to share it with you all. I got so fed up of clicking each link in my notifications one by one, that I just installed the Multi Links Plus add-on on Firefox. Now I only need to select a square around the links with the right mouse button and it opens them all on new tabs! So quick and easy.

Don't hesitate if you have questions, I hope this will make your life easier too!

message 395: by Zaz (new)

It's never too late to get going! Just fit in a few children's book or short stories if you have to. That's what I did last year ;)
