Sheryl Nantus *Waves hello*

I'm Sheryl Nantus and...

*deep sigh*

I love space opera. Science fiction romance. All that lovely stuff.

I grew up watching TOS on my momma's knee. I collected Major Matt Mason figs. I loved the original Battlestar and wrote X-Files fanfiction as well as Stargate SG-1. (Sam/Jack all the way!)

Now I write it.

But I still love to read... dying for Old Man's War to make it to Syfy and LOVE every J.D. Robb book that comes out.

*wanders off looking for a good cuppa tea*

Gibson Michaels | 18 comments Hello, my name is Gibson Michaels and I've been a Military Space Opera fan since the 1960's. By the time I finished reading Bill Baldwin's HELMSMAN series, I was hooked for life. If a sci-fi author has written a Military Space Opera, odds are that I've read it at one time or another over the past 50 years.

message 309: by Charlotte (last edited Aug 26, 2014 03:32PM) (new)

Charlotte Hunter Name: Charlotte Hunter
Favorite Books: The Witches of Karres and most of James H. Schmitz's novels and short stories; early Andre Norton; anything by Terry Pratchett up through Thud (his writing has declined badly since then, sad to say); Lloyd Alexander's Prydain Chronicles; anything by Georgette Heyer; George R. R. Martin's works, to include GOT; Yrsa Sigurdardottir's I Remember You; and many, many more.
Favorite Genres: Ghost stories. Not slasher horror, but honest-to-god ghost stories where chainsaws are strictly prohibited, as is romance and/or sex with anyone dead, and where all get nicely creeped out. Very hard to find, especially in YA, where too often the romance-or-sex-with-ghost thing takes over an otherwise good story. I like romance; romance with ghosts is just . . . ugh! Space opera, natch, and I'm glad to see more YA SO being advertised.
Favorite TV shows: Midsomer Murders; BSG (the newer version); everything Star Trek; Modern Family; The Wrong Mans (SO hilarious!); lots of Scandinavian mystery series. I cut out cable years ago and now rely on Netflix and Hulu, as well as the local library.
Favorite Movies: The Uninvited (1944); The Shining (both versions); Star Wars (4/5/6); Star Trek (love the news ones, but will always cherish the old); Murder on the Orient Express (1974); The Women (1939); Bringing Up Baby (1940?); A Bridge Too Far; Patton; The Hangover (the first one; fabulous writing!)
Favorite Food: Cheez-its and chocolate.
Day Job: Writer. I retired from the Navy a couple of years ago and decided now was the time to pursue my lifelong dream of writing. Four completed novels and pondering the way ahead.
Hobbies: Power walking; riding my beach-cruiser bike; watercolor painting (I'm wretched at it, but still in love); hanging out with the members of my MG/YA critique group.
Other: Okay, now for some things I do NOT love. Loathed Twilight; suffered through Ender's Game only because the Commandant of the Marine Corps made it required reading, and I was with a Marine unit at the time (way overrated, that book); I find Neil Gaiman's writing excellent and his imagination brilliant, but his characters are all cold and oddly off-putting; the writers of the GOT HBO series are not-so-closeted misogynists who get a kick out of seeing women raped and otherwise brutalized, and they are definitely into gratuitous T&A, most of which doesn't exists in the books . . . and why doesn't George say something about these things, goddammit?

I know, right? I met GRRM at BOSKONE two years ago and was surprised he doesn't seem to possess half the attitudes people accuse him of. I -READ- GOT before the show came out and half the things people slam him for in the book reviews are actually from the show and not the books. Not that I don't think GRRM is a bit of a misogynist himself, but it's nowhere near what people say.

I'm RK. I write at Smart Girls Love Sci Fi. (http://smartgirlsscifi.wordpress.com). I do author interviews, the occasional review (also for SFR Quarterly) and I now do a twice monthly post called SF obscure about SF/fantasy/paranormal shows from days past that go under the radar. Or were just terrible:)

I love SF. I like space opera books, movies, etc. I can't take sides on DS9 vs B5 because I have love for them both in different ways. My current obsession in Blake's 7 & British cult SF shows (Quatermass, Sapphire &Steel).

I also write. I have a fantasy romance novella out in October. (Under the name Echo Ishii)
I have bad SF novels hidden in the deep dark recesses of my hard drive.

I'm glad to find this group!

Welcome RK! Terrible late-night sci-fi movies? My husband could never understand my obsession with them :-) Especially when I watched them more than once! I think one of my favorite 'bad' sci-fi movies is Alien Apocalypse starring Bruce Campbell. There's this one scene where he cuts off a bug-alien's hand with a machete and you can see the garden hose hidden in the prothesis that spurts out the green gunk. My reply was always that I'd rather watch a bad sci-fi movie than a so-so sitcom. :-)

Laz the Sailor (laz7) | 220 comments Hey all! A GR friend posted something intriguing here, so I thought I'd come in and check it out.

I read lots of fiction, rotating through scifi, mysteries, and smut. I've read most of the classic scifi, and am done with it. I'm now looking for new authors such as Hugh Howie.

My favorite space opera is the Chanur series by CJ Cherryh.

I don't watch much TV and only go to the "big" movies.

Marvel over DC.

StarTrek over Star Wars.

BSG over Farscape.

Favorite TV shows: Currently The Last Ship, The Walking Dead, Project Runway...in the past: Farscape, BSG, Star Trek (all varieties of course!)
Favorite Movies: Aliens. Titanic. Pacific Rim.
Favorite Food: Chocolate. Is there anything else? Well, bacon of course. And blueberries.
Day Job: At a place where they build robots to go to Mars.
Other: I'm a Goodreads author and I write the SciFi Encounters column for the USA Today Happily Ever After blog. My apologies if that last item is too much info for this particular discussion?! Happy to have found the group through the mention on SFR Brigade...

Laz wrote: "Yeah, well there are strong women in the StarTrek universe. Pretty much missing in Star Wars..."

While there are strong women in Star Wars, I have to agree that they were never portrayed nearly as kick-butt as they were in the tie-in books and Clone Wars. And then there's that whole mess where, when they first announced the cast, other than Carrie Fisher and her daughter they pretty much skipped the women completely (though after much public uproar they cast a couple of AWESOME female actresses ... Gwendoline Christie of GOT fame and Lupita Nyong'o of 12 Years a Slave fame).

Yes ... Star Trek always just kind of skipped the stereotypes and politics and simply portrayed things the way Gene Roddenberry wished they would be.

I'm like the girl who's been jilted too many times and stops dating. Besides ... once you know how to write (even if it's only fanfiction) you can create your OWN universes. :-)

Cassandra Davis | 6 comments Hi, I'm Cassandra and I'm a Space Opera addict. I'm a (recovering? reformed? lapsed?) politician with an innate love of human interactions. I adore sarcastic women, brooding men, funny aliens, and star ship propulsion that can be explained with actual science.

The very first short story I ever wrote was a space-opera. I published my first novel in 2012 and I'm (slowly) working on the sequel.

When I'm not immersed in a good novel, or obsessively re-watching episodes of BSG and Firefly, I can be found gaming on-line or attending conventions.

Lynda (okalrelsrv) Fan fic - looking to redefine it with Reality Skimming Press. I think it 's natural for readers who get into a universe to try their hands writing in it. So using existing canon as a base I want to create circles of engagement leading from 'just playing ' to published Canon that aren't mutually exclusive but interact. Comments here recently encourage my gut feeling most writers like me started by imagining in an established universe.

Michelle (luckychelle) | 2 comments Name: Michelle

Favorite Books: Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan Saga, Discworld, Neil Gaiman's American Gods, The Stars my Destination, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Honor Harrington, The Forever War. Anything by Octavia Butler or Dianna Wynne Jones. Recently read Hugh Howie's Wool series, which was awesome.

Favorite Genres: Science Fiction and other Speculative Fiction (but less keen on high fantasy.) I'm a sucker for fantastically dark, witty adventure with good characters (particularly female ones) that doesn't take itself too seriously.

Favorite TV shows: Spaced, Futurama, Torchwood, The Big Band Theory, Firefly. I grew up on Red Dwarf and Star Trek TNG. I'm slightly obsessed by Farscape. Currently working my way through Community, Stargate and Star Trek TOS. Will do BSG next.

Favorite Movies: Not a huge movie fan, but I always have time for the Life of Brian, Star Wars, Serenity, LOTR and so on. I quite like the current crop of Marvel movies and yes, I like the new Star trek too.

Favorite Food: Chocolate!

Day Job: Dull finance gubbins at a US multi-national.

Hobbies: Apart from reading I bake (badly), draw (badly) and write (badly.)

Other: I struggle to find enough of the things I like to read...maybe I'm looking in wrong the places. I often think about getting more into comics/graphic novels but get bogged down in choice and fan-politics whenever I go looking for recommendations.

Welcome Michelle! Yea! Another Farscape fan! Have you heard there's another Farscape movie potentially in the works starring Aeryn Sung/John Crichton's son?

Rumor thread: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

If you're always looking for things to read and like Vorkosigan Saga, we have an entire section devoted to Romantic Space Opera and three Listopias we're building.

Listopias Here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

And we also have a comics/manga/anime section with a great list some of the fans have been been helping us build ... all cool stuff ... still kinda small ... but there has been no fan politics :-) I know what you mean, though. I was on an Avengers panel last year and got snubbed because I wasn't a 'real' fan because I came into Marvel-verse from the Movie-verse first, and THEN into the comic-verse. :-P Yeah ... thankfully we don't get that here so much.

Thanks for the welcome. I have heard about the Farscape movie. I'm a bit leary about it TBH...I would be devastated if it wasn't awesome :)

I could do without the romantic stuff in general, but I have ordered Grimspace from the RSO list and Saga from the comics list. They both looked promising.

This is gong to cost me a fortune.

Andrei Cherascu | 15 comments Hey guys,

I’m Andrei. I’m a Goodreads first-timer so I have no idea what I’m doing, but I already love the community.

Been a sci-fi fan since I read Garden of Rama, when I was just a kid (it was one of the first books I ever read). I discovered I’m a fan of space opera when I realized I loved the Gentry Lee books in the series more than the original „Rendez-Vous”. My all-time favorite novel is Dune. I also love Peter F Hamilton’s Commonwealth series and Frank Schatzing’s The Swarm (which I don’t even think has been translated to English, unfortunately). I’m a full-time author and I write space opera, so I’m really looking forward to connecting with readers who love this (sub)genre as much as I do and sharing information. Hopefully, it will also make me a better writer.

I have a predilection for sci-fi in general but I’ll read any book I can get my hands on. Some of my favorite TV shows are Stargate (especially Universe), Fringe, The X-Files but also stuff as diverse as Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, MASH, Cheers and Agatha Christie’s Poirot (the one with David Suchet). Movies are too many to count.

I’m also a huge fan of jazz (which, I’ve noticed, works surprisingly well with sci-fi, especially Miles Davis’ „Aura”) and I’m a wine afficionado. Most of the time I like to combine these three passions. My favorite place in the world is my home-office (which I rarely leave) where I share the space with a Netherland dwarf bunny who does not like sci-fi but doubles as a secretary. I’m also an amateur photographer.

It’s great to be part of the group. I’m looking forward to talking to you.

Ken McConnell (kenmcconnell) | 3 comments Greetings,

Finally getting around to participating a bit in this group. I'm a long time SF reader who enjoys the masters as much as some of the new writers in the genre. I read more Indie fiction these days, trying to support fellow unknown writers. I hail from Boise, Idaho and work as a software build engineer.

One of my related hobbies is building models of the starships featured in my own space opera novels. It lets me keep active in modeling and photography as well as writing.

Looking forward to participating in the group as much as I can.

Unfortunately, I only have time to do the models that are related to my stories. Having my ships on someone else's covers would be like writing a Star Trek novel and putting a star destroyer on the cover. At least in my eyes. For now at least, I'm all about using the models to brand my own universe.
