Karla (bookarita) | 289 comments Darn so it like Draculla's a tease...well that might be very true. I just got Stray on paperbackswap this morning love it when a book on my wish list is suddenly listed it's like a little surpize present....love it!

Karla (bookarita) | 289 comments Why is it old books are slow going? Did people just have more time on there hands or do we all suffer from adult ADD now?

message 203: by Dean (new)

Dean (cowboys86) | 122 comments Dracula starts out good, and then kind of slows down. I'm about half way through it and Dracula is more of a behind the scenes villain so far. The diary thing was kind of off putting at first but it's actually kind of cool as you get to see different characters views on the same situation. I'm thinking it will start picking back up again soon, it's started to get good again.

It's taking me ages to read it, or at least it feels like it's taking forever lol.

Jerrod (liquidazrael) I think when you are reading anything that was written so long ago, it's important to keep in mind what the world was like when it was written. By todays standards the classics might not be the most entertaining, but if you allow yourself to be put back into the time they were writing in, it can be very enjoyable.

great mindset for me I really want to read Wuthering heights now for a long time Just been paralyzed with that old classic fear, the I'm back in school and its a assinment thing, not for enjoyment. I read everything though my mind can bend into any book like playdough...lol

very true, and some people just can't get into it. I find it's a great opportunity to learn some history anyway. But I only do it when I'm having a difficult time getting into older novels.

Dean (cowboys86) | 122 comments I read quite a large chunk of Dracula last night, it's gotten really good. The first part with Jonathan and the second half of the book are where it's really interesting.

message 213: by Anne (new)

Anne Just started The Lost Symbol. Can't believe I was actually able to get this one from the library so quickly.

i actually thought those books dragged a fair bit. I can't say it was boring, but it just didnt interest me enough to not put it down..i think i read 3 of them...nothing special i think.

I just finished Strange Angels. It was kinda different..but good different. i think it was a good beginning, and the next book will let it get loose..

message 215: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Still reading Case Histories - Kate Atkinson. Also decided to listen to American Wife - Curtis Sittenfeld (21hrs 30 mins) as this is a library copy and needs to be sent back before I go away on Friday lunchtime. Next will listen to Betty:The Autobiography - Betty Driver.

message 216: by Shelli (new)

Shelli I'm reading Dracula and Frankenstien...both drag a bit...I am actually finding Dracula more interesting...I agree the beginning was good...right now...I'm about halfway...it needs to pick up again...I feel like they are moving so slow to figure out what's wrong...pick it up people!!!!I'm glad to hear it gets better again...I agree the old classics are so different to read...you really do need a mindset or the writing and slowness can drive you crazy!

Let me know what you think in the end. All I will say for now is I preferred Dracula.

message 218: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) The house emptied today as my daughter & her friend headed back off for college. My wife had shopping to do, so it allowed me to finish To Ride Hell's Chasm by Janny Wurts.

Wow! I actually sat for 3 hours straight to finish the last 200 pages. I can rarely sit still through a 1 hour TV show, yet was glued to the chair & still felt like I got a cardiovascular workout. Incredibly exciting. I don't give many books 5 stars, but this one got it. If you want a book that does horses well, this is one to read.

I agree Stuart...I'm almost done with Frankenstien and 3/4 thru Dracula...but I already like the Dracula story better!!

message 220: by Anne (new)

Anne I just finished Dan Brown's The Lost Symbol. Really disappointed. I started reading Erin McCarthy's Bled Dry (Vegas Vampires #3) for a lighthearted change of pace. It's kinda cute, but not my favorite so far.

message 221: by Ariadna (new)

Ariadna | 5 comments I'm reading Coetzee's Disgrace. I've heard a lot of good things...so far I'm enjoying it. After reading Tolstoy's War & Peace and Thomas Pynchon, Coetzee is "a relief"

message 222: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Just finished the audio of American Wife - Curtis Sittenfeld. Going to carry on and finish Case Histories - Kate Atkinson. Also today I am listening to Scarpetta - Patricia Cornwell and read my Book Circle book too.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Yesterday, I started the Killing Floor by Lee Child, the first of the Jack Reacher novels. It's pretty good, so far.

message 227: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I'm reading A Night in the Lonesome October by Roger Zelazny, but only one chapter per day, since there is one for each day of the month.

I'm also going to start This Mortal Mountain - Volume 3 The Collected Stories of Roger Zelazny tonight. Since it's a good book & I don't want to beat it up by taking it to work, I'll be reading The Last Colony by John Scalzi.

message 228: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Cindy, do you have the rest of the series available? I'll warn you, they're candy books. Hard to read just one.

Not yet, thinking I should get a copy and put it by for next October?

message 232: by DJ (new)

DJ (djdivaofjava) | 659 comments It had been suggested as a reason to keep it for that month but I think I`ll just put it on wish list and read when I get it.Thanks for the help, appreciate it,

Oh, I've read it several times before. I love it. It's not a typical read, but more of a treasure hunt. It's best read slowly & with a lot of thought. It's one of the October reads in the Zelazny group.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Jo wrote: "I am reading I Am Legend"

I reread it not too long ago & then watched the 3 movies based on it in order:
The Last Man on Earth, Vincent Price, 1964 (I think)
The Omega Man, Charleton Heston, 1971
I Am Legend, Will Smith, both endings.

That was a really fun & interesting journey.

message 236: by DJ (new)

DJ (djdivaofjava) | 659 comments Ditto here,I`d like to see the Vincent Price one.

message 237: by Jerrod (new)

Jerrod (liquidazrael) The Will Smith version is the one that is farthest from actually resembling the novel. Many people I've talked to say that The Omega Man is the most accurate to the book. I've seen The Last Man On Earth, but the details are sketchy at best.

Jo... Enjoy the book, it's very good.

message 238: by Zainab (new)

Zainab | 22 comments I actually didnt like the movie very much, so i cant help but judge the book on that...please let me know if it is worth the read!

No I just picked the 1st one up. Thanks for the warning, need to check with the library. I am just on the 3rd chapter and can already tell this is my type of book.

"The Last Man on Earth" with Vincent Price was probably as close to the book as any movie could be. The end is goobered some, but overall, it's the best of the bunch, IMO.

'The Omega Man' is almost as far off as the latest one, but more fun & better made, although not by much. At least it didn't have the HORRIBLE CGI.

I detested the Will Smith version, especially the alternate ending. Poorly made & completely idiotic on so many levels.

message 242: by DJ (new)

DJ (djdivaofjava) | 659 comments I guess I made the right decision in not watching!
Cheers Jim.

Good to know my movie buddies don't' actually read the books then. I would have liked the Will Smith version better if they had said inspired by rather than letting people think it was actually based off of. As a stand alone movie, I liked the Will Smith version, but when compared to the novel that it shares a title with... It's an abomination.

Zainab - I would highly recommend reading the book as the movie has almost nothing to do with the actually novel.

message 244: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Will now read my Book Circle book.

message 245: by Dean (new)

Dean (cowboys86) | 122 comments I enjoyed the Will Smith version, granted it's the only one I've seen and I've not read the book so I don't have much to go on. I thought it was entertaining for what it was. I'm sure it would've annoyed me more had I read the book first and I actually do plan on reading the original novel at some point. With movies that are adapted from novels I've already read, I approach them as though it's an alternate universe. I don't expect them to be exactly like the books, in fact I think that'd be a bit boring. I like to see little changes here and there.

Now to start on The Picture of Dorian Gray!

message 246: by Tracy S (new)

Tracy S | 42 comments Working my way through Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and just started Smashed, Squashed, Splattered, Chewed, Chunked and Spewed. Once I'm done with P&P&Z, I'll start Frankenstein.

Kathryn (kathry) Wow, so many great books mentioned in this thread! Metamorphosis, I Am Legend, and The Picture of Dorian Gray are all amazing reads.

I finished Doubleblind, lots of fun, started The Canal and Blood and Chocolate.

message 248: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Had a kind of melt down last nite. The last 3 books I read/listened to was not what I was expecting. Disliked Scarpetta - Patricia Cornwell, wasn't keen on Betty: The Autobiography - Betty Driver due to what she did before, I think it wasn't my cup of tea (as they say) and finally Case Histories - Kate Atkinson started off good, got to middle was ok, then finally at the end, you just lost the plot of where all these characters and who they were or ended up being. I ended up keep going back and forwards to see who was who.

Now I am reading Run For Your Life - James Patterson & Michael Ledwidge.
