Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments SECOND QUARTER CHALLENGE: FINISH THOSE SERIES!
Duration: April 1 - June 30, 2014

This challenge focuses on finishing series you've started. They can be series you started as a child and want to know what happened to your favorite childhood characters (for example, Lowry's The Giver or L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time), they can be series you would like to start and finish within the span of the quarter, or they can just be any series you started but never finished.

Rules:

- For the purposes of this challenge, a series must have at least three books in it

- Identify how many and which series you plan to finish

- Books marked as x.5 in the series are optional (for example, Percy Jackson and the Sword of Hades is #4.5 in the series so does not need to be read)

- No matter how many books you've read in the series prior to the start of this challenge (even if you've read four of the five books, say), it counts as long as you finish

- You can change your planned lists at any time

- Progress will be tracked by completed series only--individual books will not count, but you can still use this thread to track them

- To count, you must finish the series through books published in 2013 (i.e., if a series has three books currently out but a fourth is coming out later in 2014, you only need to finish the first three books to count it toward this challenge)

Jodi is both the person who suggested this challenge and its leader. Thank you, Jodi!

Claire (claire6452) | 718 comments I have finished the Tales of the Lore Valley series.
The Wind Riders (Tales of the Lore Valley, #1) by Kris Kramer Tales of the Lore Valley The Montsernan Agreement by Kris Kramer Betrayal of the Order (Tales of the Lore Valley, #3) by Kris Kramer
I've completed the Divergent series:
Divergent (Divergent, #1) by Veronica Roth Insurgent (Divergent, #2) by Veronica Roth Allegiant (Divergent, #3) by Veronica Roth
These books are every bit as good as I had heard! I think I'd rank them right up there with the Hunger Games trilogy.

I also have a question. There is a series I have read which is going to have one more book, but it's not published yet. It's expected to be out in May. Can this count for the challenge?

message 11: by Elsbeth (last edited Mar 20, 2014 01:53PM) (new)

Elsbeth (elsbethgm) | 242 comments Great idea!
There are 3 series which I would like to finish, but they might be a bit too much for 3 months.
#1 Sherlock Holmes (9 books, finished 2 so far) - 7
#2 Anne of Green Gables (6 books, finished 3 so far) - 3
#3 Little Women (3 books, finished 2 so far) - 1

So that makes 11 books - 3 series.

message 12: by Megan (last edited Jun 08, 2014 04:49PM) (new)

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments I will join in for three series right now. Great idea!

2. Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials series - previously completed The Golden Compass and The Subtle Knife - completed final book The Amber Spyglass April 2014

3. Nora Roberts' In the Garden series - completed Blue Dahlia, Black Rose, and Red Lily May 2014

4. Kristin Cashore's Graceling Realm - Graceling, Fire, and Bitterblue - completed June 2014

4/3 - challenge completed!

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 773 comments This sounds like fun! I'm currently reading A Dance with Dragons, which is the 5th and most recent book of George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series, but that will be done before April. I do have other possibilities, though.

The Poisoned Pilgrim is the 4th and most recent book of The Hangman's Daughter series by Oliver Pötzsch. I've read the other 3, so this will be easy to finish.
The Hangman's Daughter (The Hangman's Daughter #1) by Oliver Pötzsch The Dark Monk (The Hangman's Daughter, #2) by Oliver Pötzsch The Beggar King (The Hangman's Daughter, #3) by Oliver Pötzsch The Poisoned Pilgrim (The Hangman's Daughter, #4) by Oliver Pötzsch TBR

I'm really enjoying Marcel Proust's Remembrance of Things Past Series, also known as In Search of Lost Time, but I have 5 books of 7 still to read. I'll think about that one.

The same is true of Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series. I've read 9 of the 14 books in that series, and they're all chunksters!

One more possibility is The Lord of the Ring Trilogy. I've read The Hobbit, but not this trilogy.

message 18: by Jodi (last edited Mar 19, 2014 08:12PM) (new)

Jodi (readinbooks) | 1971 comments @Claire the series does count if there is a book coming out in May. As long as there are three books in the series and you have read all of the books published before the end of the quarter that is fine.

Claire, I put you down for 3 series. Is that correct?

Jodi (readinbooks) | 1971 comments Hi everyone,

We should do some buddy reads. Jacelyn and I are planning to buddy up for the Hush, Hush series. I only have to read Finale for that one.

I noticed that there are a few who want to read The Divergent Series. I have only read the first book but if people want to buddy up, we could ask Zara to set us up.

Rachel Nelson (suitedforliterature) | 167 comments Finish Those Series!
Duration: April-June
Completed: 0/2

1. Little Women (2/3):
Little Women
Little Men
Jo's Boys

2. Chronicles of Narnia (2/7):
The Magician's Nephew
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
The Horse and His Boy
Prince Caspian
The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
The Silver Chair
The Last Battle

I actually avoid series as a point. I don't like committing to one book then feeling like I'm actually committing to 3 or more books even if I don't care for the writing. However, there are a lot of series that seem really great to break into and this may actually be an actual challenge for me!

EstaAmeliaR I think with the intention of this challenge, you are supposed to read all books associated with the challenge. The only ones that you do not have to read according to the rules are the in-between books (0.5, 1.5)

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 773 comments Jodi, I'm editing this post so I have one spot for my series. I started committing to 2 but let's bump it up to 3.

William Shakespeare's War of the Roses series series has 8 books (plays), of which I'd read the first. Finished #2 3/31/14, #3 4/20/14.

Theresa, I am so sorry I don't know how I didn't see you! I have you on the list now. I don't see why Shakespeare's plays won't work. Go for it.

By the way, how is the Hangman's Daughter series? I have the first book but haven't read it yet.

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 773 comments Jodi, I just figured my posts were vague and you were waiting for me to firm it up. The Hangman's Daughter series is okay for an easy read. All the books are free on Kindle if you have Amazon Prime.

message 39: by Jodi (new)

Jodi (readinbooks) | 1971 comments @Kelsi, for sure read The Mortal Instruments. I loved that series. I think the last one is supposed to come out in May.

As for your other question about The Black Jeweles Trilogy, Kara can you answer that. It was originally published as a trilogy but now there are 9 books in the series. Does Kelsi have to read all 9 when it was originally published as a trilogy? I have a feeling the answer will be yes, but we will see. EstaAmeliaR, this question would pertain to you too.
