MK (wisny) | 2579 comments This challenge is a scavenger hunt - who doesn't love a scavenger hunt!? :-). This challenge was adapted from a challenge in another group, where they had a list of 20 or so things to 'find' in books you read. You list the book title next to the 'scavenge hunted' item, to 'collect' that item. For here, we go without a ready-made list, and build the list of items to collect on the hunt, from each new challenger who joins the hunt :).

We can run it for the year (2014), adding new rounds as needed, if someone collects all the items :). For each person who joins the hunt, please bring along two new list items for hunters to 'collect'. They can be characters, like a vampire, a teenager, a fisherman; an experience, like a flight, or a dive, or a carousel ride; a thing, like a goblet, a ring, a pair of travelling pants ;-). Whatever, basically.

With each new entrant, we can just edit our lists of items to scavenge, to add on. Please join in, 'late' starters very welcome!

The great 2014 Scavenger Hunt! - BOARD TWO - happy hunting :)

The great 2014 Scavenger Hunt! - BOARD ONE - Connie's first!

MK (wisny) | 2579 comments I am still thinking about what I want to add for two new items for the next round ....

Maybe by March 1st I'll think of some.

I invite all members to contribute two items for hunters to find, whether you're participating in this round, still working on round one, or not. That way, those who have finished round one will still be able to participate, via all of us, giving them, a new list to collect :).

And also, new hunters can join in at a new spot - no need to complete round one, before jumping into round two! If you weren't here when the last round started, or you were, but didn't want to join the scavenger hunt then, but would like to now, please join in.

Hopefully a list will begin to assemble .... sometime soon-ish :)

Happy Scavenging!

It is March. And almost spring here in the Northern Hemisphere.

How about looking for:

1) A robin (Songbird)
2) A piano

message 4: by MK (new)

MK (wisny) | 2579 comments ahh, fabulous! We need to 'unlock' a new board, for players to play!

I'm still noodling on the 'perfect' items! Will return late this afternoon .... after I beat the library closing time to return Doctor Zhivago :)

message 5: by Apoorv (new)

Apoorv Moghe (goodreadscomapoorv) | 32 comments Round Two under way and I am still scavenging the items in Round One (as I joined it just recently). Hope we have some really cool items to hunt around this time (just as what I am experiencing currently in Round One).

This indeed is exciting and intriguing at the same time.

Kudos to the makers and the participants ! :)

message 6: by MK (new)

MK (wisny) | 2579 comments I envision playing it like Bingo Boards, with players playing as many or as few 'boards' simultaneously as they'd like. BUT, only 'unlocking' a 'new board' (round?) when someone has 'finished' a board.

That way, we ALL win, when someone finishes *grin*. Because it's fun to think up new items {:D.

Also! members who aren't hunting can contribute items for scavengers to collect, too!! All can participate, as much, or as little, as they'd like.

So fun that you like it so much, Apoorv! Makes me smile. I love scavenger hunts. Reminds me of summer, Acadia, wee ones, and family. And fun!

Tytti | 1010 comments A robin? Do you mean some kind of a small bird? The dictionary gives several translations, though none that I can actually recognize... I am not a bird person.

Tytti wrote: "A robin? Do you mean some kind of a small bird? The dictionary gives several translations, though none that I can actually recognize... I am not a bird person."

Yes it is a bird, that is a harbinger of Spring in North America.

The American Robin (Turdus migratorius), also known as the robin, is a migratory songbird of the thrush family. It is named after the European Robin because of its reddish-orange breast, though the two species are not closely related, with the European robin belonging to the flycatcher family.

The American Robin is widely distributed throughout North America, wintering from southern Canada to central Mexico and along the Pacific Coast. It is the state bird of Connecticut, Michigan, and Wisconsin. According to some sources, the American Robin ranks behind only the Red-winged Blackbird (and just ahead of the introduced European Starling) as the most abundant, extant land bird in North America.

So I guess it is a harder find, unless you read a book from the US, Mexico, or Canada. If it is impossible to find, I am okay with changing to a songbird.

Connie Cote Love this challenge!

I would like to suggest a newspaper and a hospital

I so agree with you, MK ! This indeed is, and by the way it is proceeding, is like a family playing around together and enjoying every bit of it.. a race but not a competition ! The one who comes first, wins yet no one loses.. absolute fun ! :D

I suggest you to continue this over many rounds in the future as well.. what I love is that we read with more eye to details and it makes it more interesting.

Also, birds like Robin (in this round) and Canary (in round One) are the tricky ones to locate unless you really read the descriptions in the prose well.

Amazing suggestions. Now I want to finish Round One as early as possible and move over here. Damn ! ;-)

Tytti | 1010 comments Apoorv wrote: "Also, birds like Robin (in this round) and Canary (in round One) are the tricky ones to locate unless you really read the descriptions in the prose well."

Though the difference is that canaries are also pets and can be found even "working" in mines but robins live only in certain areas. I probably think "small birds" and go from there. I have a preference to tits because they are more common here. (Here, not hear, I can spell!)

Tytti, what a nice way of elaborating the subtle difference and variety in the use of the term 'canary'. I kinda got a big time clue which I had potentially overlooked. Thanks a lot. :)

MK (wisny) | 2579 comments Connie, Janet, I'm adding yours to the list now :). Janet, do you have another?

Tytti, Apoorv, do you have two items to add to the collectors' tally sheets?

For everyone: Please help build our BOARD TWO tally sheet! Each person can contribute two items for collectors to scavenge. Two things to note ;-):

1. You do NOT have to have completed BOARD ONE to start collecting on BOARD TWO. You can play either, both, or none of the boards, however suits your fancy.

2. All group members are invited to contribute two items to the hunt, whether participating with your own tally sheet or not :).

Thanks to all!

Connie, I am merely following your footsteps. As I said you are gunning to beat your own record.. I am hoping to follow suit and complete my challenge.

Thanks again to MK for such innovative and amazing ideas. (and with the two new additions that you have put in, I need to think seriously hard with my next books) ;-) :P

message 43: by Julia (new)

Julia | 59 comments I don't know if my books count, since they aren't necessarily classics, but on this board so far I have:
2. piano in Alan Bradley's The Dead in their Hallowed Arches (finished March 4, 2014
4. Hospital in Haruki Murakami's Kafka on the Shore (which I'm not done with, but I'm past a hospital scene. I probably should wait until I'm done though, right?)
5. opium and 11. Quilt in Pearl Buck's the Good Earth (finished 1/21/2014)
3. Newspaper, 7. Rainbow and 8. Grandmother in Wallace Stegner's Angle of Repose (finished 3 March 2014)
9. Prison (Fresnes prison) mentioned in Cara Black's Murder in the Sentier (finished March 1, 2014)
14. goblet from Samantha Shannon's The Bone Season (finished Feb 12 2014)

Is this how I'm supposed to do it?

message 44: by MK (new)

MK (wisny) | 2579 comments All your books count, Julia. The group is classics, but the challenges are just regarding books read in 2014 :). Classics, pulp, whatever ;-).

There's no one way to do your tally sheet. Everyone is doing whatever works best for them. The only thing I'd suggest regarding yours, is new lines for each numbered item. Easier to read that way. Also, you're kicking it! WTG!

Fabulous! Thx, Daisy :). We need more items because Apoorv is collecting almost as fast as we build the list :-D (wtg, Apoorv!).

Also, wow and cool on quite a coincidence. I *just* saw mentioned a porcelain coffee cup. Which shattered in the next paragraph when the person carrying the tray dropped it. 'Porcelain' and 'broken coffee cup' all in one go! :-p

message 50: by Apoorv (new)

Apoorv Moghe (goodreadscomapoorv) | 32 comments Hehe ! MK, the last book that I read (as mentioned in the list above) really helped me find the whole bunch of items in our list. :P

I guess, I will continue reading more non-fiction coz that seems to yield most of my answers here ;)

'Porcelain' and 'broken coffee cup' all in one go! :-p

I know ! Isnt it amazing when you collect many items in a jiffy, makes you want to read more and find as many as you can.

I just love this challenge ! Hope we add many more items to the list :)
